Finally!!! My "Rainbow Petal Bead" tutorial is ready for purchase!!!
Thank you to everyone who has been so patiently waiting for it - my poor husband gave up on building a super-duper coded thingy he was doing (I think he finally got tired of my nagging).
Anyway, here's a link to my website where you can purchase it:
http://www.amytrescott.com/rptutorialindex.html The cost is $11.95.
Thanks so much again, and I welcome any feedback! I'm new at the tutorial thing, so I'm open to any feedback that will improve my future tutorials!
Thanks again!!!

Are you sending them out yet??? I'm dying to read it so I can practice when I get to the studio... I know it's only been 3 hours since I paid, I'm impatient. Forgive me :hide:
PM Amy if you haven't gotten it - I know she is sending them out pretty much right away.

Yes!!! Donna, I sent your link right away after I saw that you had paid. I've literally sent them out mintues after I've received payments all day.
But, it looks like if I sent them (e-mail) through Pay Pal, people aren't receiving them.
I think I will need to re-send all of the folks that I e-mailed through Pay Pal.
I'm really sorry, and hope this little wrinkle will be ironed out quickly. Donna, I'll send you another e-mail and will send you the link to the tutorial in a PM just in case.
Thanks for your patience!

Well this has been an intersting evening. I don't think it's Pay Pal - I can't seem to send e-mails (perfect timing).
So, for those of you who have paid, go here:http://www.amytrescott.com/rptutorialindex.html
And below the "How to Order" area, you'll see a link that says "Tutorial Page". Click on that, it will take you to a page that will ask for your e-mail (that you used for Pay Pal). Type in your e-amil, and that will let you in to the tutorial.
Hopefully soon, my e-mail will be working, and all will be back to "normal". I can't believe of all days, I have problems today!!!!
I'm so sorry for the trouble, and hope you'll enjoy the tutorial.
Thanks!
Amy
PS - I'm also trying to send the link via my work e-mail...
that is weird - hope you get it worked out soon!
Thanks Amy !!! Great looking Tutorial, can't wait to try it !!

Amy, have you tried printing it out? Just curious if things get cut off or if it prints "normal". I can hardly wait to try it out. Thank You!
Love it! Thanks again, Amy!
I did a "Print Preview" Donna, and it lines up perfectly. I didn't print, I usually find having my laptop beside me easier to turn pages on, than real paper !

Okay, I think that everything is working fine now, but if you haven't received your link to the tutorial, please let me know (I think it's all straightened out).
Sigrid was nice enough to put the tutorial in pdf format, so if you've purchased it, and would like a pdf version, e-mail me and I'll send it to you (as long as my e-mail's working - I still can't believe the trouble I've been having).
Anyway, I'm able to print it out just fine, but if you're not, hopefully the pdf version is your answer.
Thanks so much everyone,
Amy

I have to thank everyone who has been so encouraging about my tutorial. It was a leap for me - my first.
Becky, if you go back to the html version, up in the top right corner (underneath the top-right bead), you'll see where it says "PDF Format" in red letters. All you have to do is click on that, and you'll have it! :)
Thanks so much everyone - it was far more successful than I though possible (my husband is floored).
I hope as others find out about it, they'll consider purchasing it too! :)
Thanks so much - And if anyone has any questions, please - don't hesitate to PM or e-mail me!
Thanks again!!!

Here is my favorite, done with Bullseye colors, all pinks and peonies with a touch of green/aventurine. I love how the colors of the petals all blend into a new "color", and at the bottom you can look up and see the layers too.

This tutorial is definately worth it, if you are thinking about it but have not bought it, geez louise, just go get it!!! This is such a cheap price amy for the technique learned in this tutorial!! You know, you can spend 300-1000 for a class and only take home certain things that speak to you and leave the rest in your notes somewhere that you will not use. so what i am saying is, this technique is just lovely and thank you for your generosity on the price. Alot of people who do not take classes regularly from the big names do not understand that these tutorials that people are putting out are really a great bargain. Happy New year everyone!!!!!

They are GORGEOUS!!!! And just think of the possibilities of taking the layering techniques and tweaking it here and there. I'm a HUGE fan of that 3-D look.
I'm working on a very short (and free) tutorial for casing with clear when you have a design underneath which might help some with this bead (I haven't forgotten about you Tammy)! Well here is my first attempt at one of these beads. Its clear where I need to practice more as the blemishes in this bead are extremely obvious. And I definitely need to read up on encasing, but overall, this was a tremendously fun bead to make. I think I did pretty good for an overly ambitious beginner. I'm going to try another one tomorrow.

christopher - I think you have done a great job :) I know that i sucked a encasing, but this tut has helped me tremendously.....remember PPP ( practice, practice, practice) it totally helps.......I really like how you got such deep crevises between your colors.....I think i need more practice on that.....
do you put lots more transparent color compared to the opaque?
or should they be very similar in size dots? to get the 3-d look?
MardiGrasGlass
2009-01-07, 5:42pm
I dont know what I did to tell you the truth. I know that I used all transparent colors and layered them over white. So it was black base, white dot, trans red, white dot, trans orange, white dot, trans yellow and so on. And I left out the periwinkle. As for the 3-d look... your guess is as good as mine. I bet you i'll never get that look again...LOL
I do know that I didn't completely cover the white dots with the transparent colors though. I used the transparent stringer color and just went along the edge and didn't overlap.
amy trescott
2009-01-07, 6:15pm
They do look great, Christopher! I love that look too - using white/transparent combos. It has a VERY dramatic effect, and there's more variation in the color (deeper in the center, lighter on the outsides of the petals) when you do that - love that.
And Renee - I just opened an Etsy shop and have 10 tutorials for sale (anyone feel free to "heart" me if you like)! :)
Just gave you a big !
I love your tutorial. It's one of my favorites I own! And I definitely need encasing help still, so I can't wait for your future tutorial. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I thought this would be a good place to post this (I'll make a note on my website too).
I've had a couple of e-mail glitches lately, and want to give everyone a heads up on what to expect when you buy my tutorial.
If you buy it from my website: As soon as you pay for it (in Pay Pal), it should automatically forward you to the tutorial. If you buy it from my website and you do not receive it right away, contact me immediately/PM me here.
If you purchase it through Etsy: I have to send it to you the traditional way. Please give me a couple of hours, but I try to send it within minutes (I check my e-mail often unless I'm away). If you buy the tutorial from Etsy and you don't receive it within an hour or two, contact me immediately/PM me here.
Like I said, I've had a couple e-mail glitches and people have waited a day or two for their tutorials, when I thought they were sent and taken care of.
I'm VERY thankful for LE's PM system because it is a sure-fire way to be able to get in touch with one another.
So, long story short - when you buy my tutorial, you should not have to wait a day to receive it, so let me know. I want you to have it ASAP!!!! :)
Thanks a bunch,
Amy

Janet that is a very nice bead. All the colors show. :)
Ok i have a question of everyone.
Janet's bead has very concave dots of color. Mine never turn out like this but i do like the look. How does one go about making dots like this where the underneath color bends like that.
Small white dots with more color on top?
big white dots with less color on top?
same size dots?
Someone please help.....
Janet by the way awesome bead!!!

Thanks StOrM, but I'm sure if you've bought the tutorial Amy would be happy to answer any questions you may have about her technique. If you haven't bought it, I highly recommend it. It's only 12 bucks and well worth the money. These beads have been driving me crazy for years and now it's a piece of cake!
You can find it at:

I have the tut....but i am still trying to figure this one thing out....thats why i asked.
Amy's beads are very well done....there is not white showing and the depth between each dot or color is very smooth....where as your bead has depth to it.....which i kind of like...
Janetda
2009-05-01, 8:57pm
I think it might be the photo, but I'm not sure. Perhaps if you IM Amy, she can give you more info.
Janet
No thank you..... I was just looking for everyone's opinion. I know everyone has there different styles or techniques that work for them and i was just wondering if anyone has come across what i am asking.
I know Amy reads her thread and i am sure she will give me her input. Thank you for your help and concern.
try putting a dot of clear over each before going on to the next color. that might do it, it works in encased flowers.
I have a question about that also.......I tryed to make a bead with Amy's tut but used colored base dots with clear over top......and in the end it didn't turn out very well.....would this be because i might have overlapped the clear too much into the last color and then it made the clear and clear dots meld together?
But that is a great suggestion....i will do what i normally do put put a clear dot over the last transparent dot i make.......should i go over the dot or just on the dot?
I would try a dot of clear smaller than the one you put it on. I have not tried this so I don't really know just a guess.
cool...i will try it ,.....thanks :)
Yes I love this tut !!!

Hi Storm! Sorry this post is so late in getting back to you. You know, it's hard to say what went wrong (maybe by now you've conquered it though). :)
A couple of things:
One, in my personal opinion, the petals look best when they're opaque with a transparent layer over it (but not just clear - an actual color).
Two, some colors just aren't made for a petal bead. I've tried to make some petal beads where I thought they were going to turn out great, and blech!!!! You just have to find the right color combos.
Let me know if you have any other questions - I WILL check back!!! :)
Thanks again everyone!

Okay Storm! This is what you should do to get that look. Use my tutorial to guide you in how large the dots should be, and after you melt them in and you go to put the transparent layer over it (again - not clear - use a transprent color to make it look its best) don't cover the whole white spot. Leave just a fraction of white showing. And after it's all done, and you finally wrap it all in clear, it'll really pop out.
Hope that helps! :)
Bye!

I am sad...I was thrilled to get my tutorial and got right onto it. Well the bead came out beautiful! Why am I sad?? It split into 6 pieces. The only thing I can figure is I used Lausha clear- the rest was all what was called for. I always thought that they were compatible. Or is it something else I did??
you have to keep your bead warm the entire time....the first few cracked n me too
mtnlaurel
2009-12-15, 10:28pm
Thanks! I will try again- Do you think the Lausha clear had anything to do with it?
No, I've used it successfully. :)
I agree with Pat. Any clear should be ok. Just make sure you keep your bead warm the entire time...if a clear cracks this type of bead then it usually does not break in pieces, it just looks cracked on the surface.
amy trescott
2009-12-17, 9:28am
It split into 6 pieces.
Bummer! That's so frustrating. Especially because this bead is very time-intensive.
I have to say though, in the long run, better to "play it cool" with this bead than let it get too warm. If it gets too warm, the petals and lines on the bead will start to shift, and you won't get those crisp, vertical lines from the petals.
How did it feel while you were working it? Did it seem like you were trying to work it on the cool side? Or did it totally surprise you that it broke? Also, did it break in the kiln?
You know, I have had a couple of beads that broke like that when I mixed Lauscha with Effetre. I know technically, it doesn't make sense, since they both have the same COE, but it was the only thing I could think of that could have made the bead crack. It wasn't clear though that I was using at the time - it was transparent peach. I wonder if there are just goofy batches or something out there - I don't know. I know it should work just perfectly.
Hope you have more luck with it - But like I said, I like that you're working it on the cool side. In the long run - once you find that perfect temp - your bead will be amazing!!!
Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,
Amy
Or maybe it wasn't heated enough at the very end before popping in the kiln.

Yes!!! That's a great point. Try to work it cool, but at the end, when everything is where it should be, give it a nice extra-heating up before putting it in the kiln. But obviously, just make sure that you don't set it in the kiln hot so you don't get kiln rash on the bead. :)

Well thanks for all the suggestions! I believe I was working it on the cool side and then heated it pretty good in order to melt all of the casing I had put on. Yes- it broke in the kiln- is that a clue what I am doing wrong? I haven't had the time to try again yet- I wanted to make sure I didn't make the same mistake first :-) Renee
PS Encasing is not my strong point- I had several beads crack that day. I have a Paragon SL3 and I think I may have programed my cooling down stage wrong. It works for all my beads except when I encase

Just bought the tut and I can't wait! Has anyone done these in boro yet? I wonder if there would be any differences?
I have never really been a huge bead fan, I know, sad isn't it, but these are the prettiest beads I have ever seen!!!

Thanks! I will try again- Do you think the Lausha clear had anything to do with it?
I love this tut! I made three beads, exactly as instructed in the tut, but I too used Lauscha clear and they all cracked. I made two more but with moretti clear and they didn't crack. When using Lauscha, I warm the bead evenly before putting it in the kiln, I anneal at a higher tempature, and I put it in the kiln glowing. My beads still crack when combining glass.
I was whining about cracked beads on this forum, and Carolyn and a few other folks gave me advice that saved my sanity! Only use Lauscha with Lauscha. It has saved me lots of frustration.
The moretti isn't clear enough to make this bead pretty IMO- as when there are bubbles....they are so obvious. I made some with Precision, it was better, but still wasn't as clear as I wanted. I am trying to collect enough colors of Lauscha to use only Lauscha. This works for me since I have a huge stash of Lauscha clear that I need to use with something. I also ordered some Aether to use with my other 104 glass. I can't wait to try it!
Good luck!!

Love this tutorial! Haven't done the rainbow yet, but using the technique have been messing around with different colors. Here are the first three results.
First one done with opaque reds and yellows and striking reds and yellows for the transparent portions. The other two needed a bit more clear on the one end to cover the opaques. I think the middle one, I grabbed a softer white, maybe anise white, by mistake, as it did bloom where exposed.
Have not figured out how to get the final shape more oval or barrel shaped as opposed to round/doughnut - Michael

FINALLY!!!! :D
Ok, so it's only 3 different blues, but I'm happy with it.
Ok, so not really, if it were perfect, THEN I would be happy with it. SO, what does that mean? I'm happy with my progress, how's that?
(thinking I should delete all this and just start over but I'm too lazy)
Be kind ok?

Well... some things just don't turn out the way you hope. :) I thought these colors were going to look so cool, but when I took them out of the kiln... Not quite what I'd hoped.
So, I thought I'd give them away (one per person). If you're not that fond of the colors, maybe you'd just like to have it for the sake of the technique.
Whoever PMs me first will get the focal, and then I'll give away the rest in order of which I think are the best (technique-wise). Just PM me your address (first 8 folks).
I'll post a pic of the beads below so you can decide if you'd like one.
Thanks again to everyone for your support with my tutorial - You'll never really know how much I've appreciated it!

Yeah, that was fun! And I will purge more here I'm sure, as I'm figuring what does and does not do well with the petals.
Here's a tip that I've learned folks: Cool colors tend to look better than warm tones for whatever reason. I'm still trying to "crack that code". :)

Yeah, I got mine on Saturday and it is GORGEOUS!!!! I love it - thanks Amy. I do have one gripe - I can't keep my beads that small when I make them - they end up way way way way bigger.

What a great tutorial!
I panicked when I saw how old the first post was and was so very relieved when I found I could still purchase this tutorial.
I have to wait a while because I have one hand in a brace but I cannot believe how excited I am to try this technique.
I now understand how to do a bunch of things I've been picturing in my head for a while with which I am certain this tutorial will be a great deal of help!
Again.. thank you!

First off, I want to thank all of your nice compliments on those goofy beads I gave away. I was nervous that you all were going to be sorely disappointed when you opened the package - so thank you!
Secondly, I need your help! I just got a really interesting PM. Someone asked if this tutorial would work with boro glass - and I have no idea! I have zero experience with boro, so I was hoping maybe someone here who's had experience with both might be able to answer that.
Are the techniques applicable to boro (even though I only use soft effetre 104 in the tutorial)?
Thanks a bunch!!!

Sue.. even though I felt a little naughty I couldn't help myself. It was so reasonably priced I couldn't resist.
I blew the dust OUT of my PP account (actually sold something to do it) and raced for this tute and, I have to say, it is SO well done.
When you get it you won't regret it!
I'm still a bit of a newbie (with a wrist brace on so it may be a while, even still) but it was an absolutely inspiring read, so clear, great pics and wonderfully encouraging.
Awesome tutorial. :)

Hi all! Just a pop-in to mention & remind anyone that if you buy my tutorial from Etsy and you don't receive it within about 6 hours, be sure to check your "junk mail" box. It seems that some spam filters want to send my e-mails to your spam folder. :(
Of course, if you buy it directly from me, you'll get it instantly - so again, if you don't receive it instantly, be sure to check your spam folders.
Thanks again everyone for all of your support and interest in the tutorial!!!! :)

I purchased this one a while back and was able to try it out a few weeks ago. I did this one when the encasing challenge for us newbies was going on, since then I have upgraded to a different torch (hh to a minor) and gonna retry this now that I understand the encasing aspects. My bead does not do justice to this tut but trust me it is an exceptionally written and extremely easy to do tut. Thanks Amy!

I agree with Steven this tutorial is very, very easy to follow. I made one bead (its huge lol, I am going to have to work a lot smaller!) but plan on making many more, I have lots of ideas to adapt this to other color variations. Thank you so much for making this one so easy to follow!

Hi folks! I've had some questions lately about how to get the petals straight - it seems like that can be the biggest problem. The short answer is... work slow. I know that can be hard to do when you're excited and want to see the end result (not to mention this bead is time-intensive), but that is the primary solution. Also, work cool as possible without letting it crack, of course. Working cool will keep the petals crisp!
One more tip: When you encase it in clear - and this goes for any encasing on any bead as far as it works for me - if you wrap the bead in clear and need to add more clear (because it didn't totally wrap/it's thin in one are, etc)... Heat up some more clear and put that clear on top of the clear that is on the bead and melt it in. Don't allow the second wrap of clear to spill over the initial wrap. If you do, the design underneath will look really funky. I hope this makes sense.
Anyway, hope this helps and thanks again!!!
Thanks for the tips, Amy. I love making thesea beads. :)

Hi Amy,
I just purchased your tut and it is so much fun! My first bead did get a spider crack and then broke. Here is my second attempt....
My petals just aren't stretching as much as I would like them....boy this took me a good hour to work on. Once I have the clear on and the bead pretty well shaped is it too late to get the petals to stretch more??
