Hi everyone, I was just at Frantzartglass.com and they are sold out of the newest batch of dark ivory pastel (nicknamed curdled ivory)! Does anyone know another store I can get this from? Thanks in advance :)

SOLD OUT! Thank You!
I haven't changed the name or anything on my website, but I've been told that the batch of dark ivory I have in stock is in fact "curdled" :)
I just received mine from Gail at GGGlass. Can't wait to try it this weekend!!!

Who has purchased the Curdled Ivory and know how it reacts . I don't want to sell it as Curdled Ivory if it isn't. I know the production dates are different than what Mike F. stated.03/03/08
Mine are 31/03/08 and02/06/08 both look.

Bill, if this helps, the rods look a bit rougher, more variegated on the ends and through the rods itself, it's not a consistent color on the outside of the rod either, like the older dark ivory used to be. It webs out easily for a more organic look when melted and reacts beautifully with silver.

I was also told to look for a white "half moon" shape at the ends at the edge and it runs down the length of the rod. All the dark ivory I've received is from the last month or two, so I'm almost positive that with the "half moon" and from when I received it, the stuff I had is "curdled" ivory. The way Nikki describes it, is just like what I had. Didn't even get to try it :(

I would like to keep this thread up so we can compare the different batches by date.Just like Bill is talking about :). When my order comes in I will play with it and let everyone know. I do remember a really bumpy rough rod set in June of this year from Frantz and I loved it. It had a half moon pattern, loved very little silver, and laced well with intense black. Please post pics of beads from different batches of drk ivory glass rods and the date and place you purchased. Thanks in advance, Lili
I looked at the end of the rods I just got from Frantz and there is a white spot close to the edge of the rod and it is roughly diamond/half moon shaped - and the rod is a little rough.

cool, thank you for checking !
And when you make a bead the ivory has a lot of sparkles in it, you can see it very well holding the bead close to the flame while making it.
yes, mine has that sparkle while it's hot :)

have you tried lbsupplys?
I checked with him when I placed my last order last month and he didn't know anything about it.
It's not called Curdled Ivory - it's just Effetre Dark Ivory and it's the current batch. If he has gotten ivory from Frantz recently, it is the curdled stuff. You might want to ask him when he got his stock.
playswithfire104
2008-11-22, 12:29pm
We discussed and he didn't think his was the curdled stuff.
well, I ordered some from LB Supplys figuring it would be the same as what Frantz has and it looks the same to me and the rods are rougher than the older ivory I have, but it is possible it's not the same I suppose. It will be hard to tell without using it to see if I can see the sparkle, but it is sooooo cold here and I may not be able to torch for a few days.
Here are pics
this is the bundle I got from France:

This is what I got from LBSupplys:

The ends on the frantz bundle are cleaner and easier to see the ends well, but they look pretty similar. The LBS bundle perhaps has more darker color on the ends.
Anyhoo, I thought I would post it. I will try to make a couple of beads with it to see how it looks.

Ohhh! Yay! That first pic looks just like the stuff I just sent out :) I was a little worried that it might be wrong, but I had someone come and tell me a couple weeks ago that I had the "curdled" ivory and I had no idea. So yay! Thanks for posting the pics Squid!
The one i have from Frantz and from LB are both the so called curdled. Both react like crazy with silver glass and have the sparkles in them. Turning the cut rods in bright light also shows a tiny bit of sparkle on the ends, if you look really good :)
At the time i didn't even know about it being curdled ivory, i just needed ivory cause i almost ran out of it.
The base of the 2 beads with the frit and sis on them are curdled from LBSupplys

Woo Hoo! Thanks so much Squid your the BEST! I needed drk ivory anyway so I wasn't worried if it was curdled or not. Now I wonder if there is any left anywhere. Thanks Donna for sending out my order so fast (your also the BEST):), I can't wait!
I made a few beads tonight with both the Frantz and LBS glass and they both had the glittery look to them and they both webbed nicely, so I feel sure the LBS glass is the curdled :)

Oh boy... so as of today there is some dark ivory on the moretti and more site... is this the curdled ivory???? or regular?
Ok, so i got some other dark ivory out to look at the differences.
I have some that also has the white half moon shape close to the edge of the rod, it isn't a consistent color on the outside either but isn't rough on the outside at all (just a tiny bit) and it is completely opaque looking at the end.
Then there's other ivory that is also bumpy and rough and also not completely opaque as the curdled. But it doesn't have the grainy rough outside or the white half moon shape.
O no and this is what i just now found out, this complicates things more #-o
In Frantz's bundle there are 2 different kinds of ivory. I could easily pick the rougher/grainy rods out of it and then i looked at the ends. They're totally different. The rougher rods are the curdled, i can also see a bit of sparkle and they are a bit darker on the ends and have some transparent on the ends and the other ones are........ never mind, they are the same as the 1st one i described which is ivory i bought overhere in The Netherlands #-o
Glad i found this out though.
So that's the same batch they sent from Italy to travel to The States and everywhere in Europe
Conclusion: i think the curdled ivory is a very special batch, i didn't see it overhere. Effetre always makes huge batches, so, where is the rest, or maybe this was the last bit on the bottom they pulled out or what?
Ok, now i'm officially ivory nuts, thanks so much for the curdled stuff Effetre ](*,)
So to be sure look at the ends and you can see some sparkle and there's some DARKER transparent in it. On the outside the rods are really rough/bumpy, i could seperate them easily from the other ones.
Now i go :hide:

I got an order from Generations this month - great service, well packed. And of course I ordered dark ivory.
Compared with what I received from Frantz, the batch from Generations is paler, skinnier, and not as variegated or rough-textured. No "telltale" white crescent on the end, either. You may want to check and see where they purchase from and when they received it...
ETA: It's still dark ivory, and I will still love it and hug it and take it to a desert island with me should I have a chance to grab glass and a torch on the way... I just don't think it's the Curdled Ivory.

Reenie
2008-11-25, 12:49am
Okay...the curdled ivory I had was smooth NOT rough. (not as smooth as Vetrofond but pretty close). It had dark striations down the rod and it does have the half moon or a spot of white on the end (I saved a few rods)
So I went back and checked out the rest of my Dark ivory and I'm finding the same moon shaped or white dot on the ends but these rods are rougher. So it could be that all my Dark Ivory stash is the Curdled Ivory but I'm not sure.
I have a few pounds still but I don't want to sell it as Curdled if I've made a mistake.
Can someone tell me what's a good way to find out. I'll burn a couple of ends just to test these out before I sell it.
If anyone wants Dark Ivory...regardless it's on the site but I won't list it as the Curdled until I know for sure!
*Naos*

Reenie - make a paddle from each one. The Curdled gets way more curdling than the regular. My rods are fairly rough, with the halfmoon.
DPete1104
2008-11-26, 12:53am
I wasn't putting a single word in your mouth. I was just telling you that yes, Paula sold you Curdled Ivory - end of story.
Well yes, Paula sold me glass that was marked as curdled ivory odd...and I'm sure she probably thought it was curdled ivory when she sold it to me. And unless you are the one who pulled my order and wrapped and shipped it for her, you really don't have any idea just exactly what it was that I got, do you?
I posted what I did because the rods I got didn't look like what everyone was describing as "curdled ivory" and I was trying to find out if I indeed HAD curdled ivory, which is what the tag on my glass said it was... and now you say your curdled ivory looks completely different than what I have:
My rods are fairly rough, with the halfmoon.
which is not what mine is at all. Mine all have a smooth texture, white dot rather than a crescent, no dark bits of transparent glass, no sparkles. When I melted it, no sparkles in the molten glass, some striations(webbing) but no more than my usual dark ivory.
I'm certainly not saying I've been cheated..she charged me her regular price for the glass, it's perfectly fine glass and her customer service was excellent as usual (I have bought glass from her a couple times before). I was simply trying to figure out if it was the "real deal" and by all the indications I'm seeing here, unfortunately it's not.
*Shrug*
I ordered some from Bill this morning...he's not sure his is the real deal either (not the same manufacturing dates) but I figured I'd take a chance and give it a try. At least I won't have to buy any dark ivory for a while...*smile*
So pull in your protective mother-cat claws please...we're all sisters (and brothers) in our love of beautiful glass...

I have some rods of recent Effetre Dark Ivory from Frantz, Moretti & More, and LB Supplys. I took photos of all of what I have for comparison for you. I don't have any association with any of these vendors. Please note that only Frantz identified what I purchased as 'Curdled' Dark Ivory.
Rods that I compared:
1. "Plain old" Effetre Dark Ivory of unknown vintage (more than 1 year old)
2. "Curdled" Effetre Dark Ivory from Frantz shipped 11/10/08
3. Effetre Dark Ivory from Moretti & More shipped 11/24/08
4. Effetre Dark Ivory from LB Supplys shipped 11/22/08
Here's a comparison of the ends:
Note that all of them, including the "plain old" dark ivory, have a spot of white (you gotta squint -- that end is out of focus!). The M&M batch is mostly oval in cross-section. The others are all round. The LB Supplys is sparkly with more color variation and less definition of the white spot. The M&M resembles the Frantz most in appearance here.
146569
Here's a comparison of the rods:
You can't compare color on the outside of the rods well with this photo, but they all have variation. The "plain old" dark ivory has the least amount. The M&M and Frantz are stripey, while the LB Supplys has the same amount of variation but wider stripes. The LB Supplys rods are very nubbly (rough). The M&M and "plain old" rods have slight roughness, and the Frantz rods are very smooth.
146570
Here's a comparison of some paddles and beads:
This is a bit tricky because the color can be influenced so much by working the glass. I tried to be consistent but am sure I wasn't. I used the least amount of heat needed to round out the beads. The color on the paddles could be manipulated by reheating (the darkness would lighten), but the amount of 'curdling' stayed the same. So Your Mileage May Vary, here. I'm not liking these photos, so much. I think I need to take them again under more even lighting.
146571
And the other side just to go nuts:
146572
My own observations:
All 3 newer Dark Ivories had more character than the "plain old" dark ivory. They're all very nice, but I'd have a hard time finding some definitive way of identifying 'curdled' ivory, unfortunately. I think something larger and more sculptural piece would probably be more dramatic (I wasn't up for that today). The only one of my batches that had sparkles was the LB Supplys batch. The sparkles were noticeable in the rod, at the torch, and in the finished bead. Very nice.
Hopefully these photos are helpful -- or they might just confuse everyone more than they already are

- Becky H.

Very nice.
Hopefully these photos are helpful -- or they might just confuse everyone more than they already are
Regards,
- Becky H.
All three of those on the right look like the curdled to me :).
LBS Supply, Moretti and More and I buy our glass from a main distributor which is Frantz art glass so we all got the same stuff. It does vary in colors and also in roughness.
I just checked out the rest of my ivory and it is the Curdled Ivory. I only have about 3 lbs left in stock!
I'll list them now since I just got done playing with it.

Yes, my main conclusion was that some of the factors that people were using to decide what was *absolutely* "curdled" was maybe not rock-solid, since the batches I got had some different characteristics but also had great curdliness.
Curdliness = good!
Thanks, Reenie -- you'll be making several folks very happy (or one person who needs 3 pounds) !

I wish I had more of this stuff. It's almost gone and there's alot of people that still haven't tried it. Maybe you all can order just a teenie bit?
LOL Fat chance!
Hey who knows...the next batch could be the same stuff whenever it gets here. I'm told that it will NOT be on the next shipment coming in so looks like we won't get any of the Dark ivory...regular or curdled for a little bit.
Hoping Mikey can do an airfrieght on this stuff!!
I've been selling the curdled ivory for months and had no idea it was curdled until someone brought it up in the main thread. I wish I knew before...I would have ordered the wholel lot:-)

Ruth,
I've never used propay. Is is something simple to set up?
If not, yes it's just paypal, checks or money orders for now.
Credit cards in the future but when the economy picks up probably
Thanks for all your hard work, Becky! Since Reenie, Paula, Bill and Jon get all their glass from Frantz, looks like everybody got Curdled Ivory! :D Rough or smooth, half moon or dot.
I just bought a pound of "curdled ivory" from FlameDame...one rod in the bundle was marked with a tag as "Curdled Ivory" . All the rods are smooth and have a small white dot on the cut ends and they seem to have darkish stripes running lengthwise on the outside
146318
so is this the real stuff?
Hi Denise. If you bought curdled ivory from me then you got curdled ivory as I received it from Frantz. I buy from Frantz and another importer and had the Curdled Ivory and Regular Dark Ivory on the website. The Curdled Dark Ivory was labeled that and the regular Dark Ivory was labeled Dark Ivory. If you bought just Dark Ivory you would not have got curdled ivory.
I am absolutely positive that I didn't mix them up.
I hope that clears things up.

Well the tag on the glass you sent me does read "Effetre Curdled Ivory Odd/Flamedame" but it looks and melts like the "plain old dark ivory" pictures posted by flyingcorgi.
As I keep trying to say, it's still good glass and I'm fine with it since this seems to be an unexpected oddlot and no one is exactly sure how it came into being. Maybe I will hit the jackpot with the glass I ordered from Bill....

I just got my dark ivory from Bill (wow... fast shipping!) at Moretti and More today... and when I first worked it it lightly I had some striations ... more than regular dark ivory... but when I used it with my Gaia and Triton... it popped! and was beautiful in its webbing. I'll try to post some pics when I get home from out of town Saturday. I'm so tickled I got 2 lbs. You can't tell its curdled ivory until you work it a bit... and really when used with your silver colors because it is smoother than the curdled ivory I got from Frantz... with a small spot of lighter ivory on the cut ends. This is sooo confusing, lol.
Good luck all! Shari

Thanks so much Becky for posting all of those pics! I got my glass from Bill today too.It looks like the good stuff to me. I am happy with it no matter what. I just don't want to run out of dark ivory. :)
So this is like River Rock - With some rods smooth, some rods rough, different core patterns but they all pretty much did the same thing! ;)

never mind--I just read today's updates just now....thank you!!!
I got Curdled Ivory from Frantz and the rods were smooth with some sparkle in it...I also got some Curdled Ivory from another vendor and the rods were rough and had lots of sparkles...they both worked similar and the sparkles are not present after working the glass--only in the flame.
The rough one has a tad more of the ambery part and the smooth ones have more of the white part when it separates(if that makes sense)
Both were gorgeous.....and almost identical in the curdling ability....8-)8-)
Either way, it's awesome glass....

I was a lucky buyer of some of Reenie's Curdled Ivory...I've not had a chance to try it yet, but I have some feelings on it, and ivory, in general, especially in light of Shari's posting...
As a lot of you know, Dark Ivory is very reactive when used with Silver (as in Silvered Ivory Stringer, etc.), and I've found that Dk. Ivory will fume, all mottled and wonderful, when you use Silver glass with it as well, especially some of the more heavily infused Silver Glasses. For example, here is a picture of a Big Hole Bead I made during my latest Precision 104 testing on a Hot Head. Note that this bead is made with Dk. Ivory Base with "Sasha's Silver Dots", then "Gaia" and "Clear" Dots...see the wonderful, mottled "fume" that occurred on the Dk. Ivory - and without using any other silver product?:
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x280/theglasszone/Precision%20Testing/SashaSBHB1.jpg
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x280/theglasszone/Precision%20Testing/SashaSBHB2.jpg
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x280/theglasszone/Precision%20Testing/SashaSBHB3.jpg
Therefore, I suspect that your bead, Shari, was "enhanced" by your use of a Silver Glass with the particular Ivory. Just my humble opinion...
OK - carry on... :)

I've gotten alot of orders so I'm going to now go through the rest of my dark ivory and burn baby burn.
this glass has got to be the most confusing stuff ever!!!!
IF I have more I will list it. Please don't PM me because I've got so many to go through and I hate telling everyone "no I'm out"
I wish everyone got this stuff as well as me because I've been giving my pound away just to cover everyone.
So boy...I pray I don't need any dark ivory for awhile;-)
Luckly....I never have time to torch.
So I'm gonna leave you all and go figure this glass out.
IF I have more in stock I promise I'll let you know. There will be a 1/4 lb limit though which I also hate to do.
Wish me success in finding more :-)

Thank you all for the input. My dark ivory was curdling a bit before I used the silver I didn't take the time then to work it by itself a little more to make it "curdle" for real but I know it came off the rod when I was winding it on with more texture in it... if that makes sense? I'll be in the studio tomorrow to play more. I got 1 pound from Frantz yesterday also. I know I've used my silver glass with the old ivory and it didn't do anything like the ivory I used from Moretti and More earlier this week and probably this second batch I got from Frantz I'm guessing. I'll post more later.

I've got some "curled ivory" here in the Netherlands. The glass is a bit sparkly, I've never seen that in ivory. Only when it's molthen though ;). I used it for this bead:

As for the bundles they are also left Moretti and More, right Frantz. What do u think?

yes--the left half is Curdled Ivory and the right half is the dark Ivory stringer I bought from Donna(zen-mom)
The Dark Ivory stringer curdles nicely by itself. The only difference was when the silver glass was added. The Curdled Ivory darkens....there was no difference in how the silver glass struck on either of the ivories....
oh, and I did a test to see if the Curdled Ivory still had sparkles even when pulled thin, and yes, it does.....

OK, I got twp pounds of so called curdled ivory from ABR and if anything this stuff is less reactive than my regular dark ivory. It has no markings on cross section and I've tried it with silver glass and silver with very little result. Can someone send me a short or two of curdled ivory so I can compare before I complain bitterly? Don't really have a leg to stand on though, I ordered dark ivory and got dark ivory. Only verbal assurances it was the curdled stuff. Serves me right for jumping on the freakin' band wagon again!

I'll send you a rod of the 2 versions I have so you can check it out. I have the version I got from Frantz and the one from Phoenix Art Glass..... You are out in Canada so with the Holidays and international shipping it may take a bit of time to get to you....but I'll send it on it's way!

interesting. I have curdled ivory from Frantz and Phoenix that both have the sparklies and look similar in cross section. Phoenix's has more transparent in it.
There are more sparklies in her version and her rods are thicker and course yet glossy on the surface. Frantz's rods are thinner, matte and rough.
I'll post a pic in a bit.
Both do the curdling effect....I actually prefer the Phoenix Curdled Ivory to the Frantz version by just a hair.
anyhoo, I just wanted to label them by vendor because they look so different, bu they very well may just be on the front and tail end of the same production.....
I have some Ivory coming that MAY be curdled. I am kind of doubtful it is the right stuff, but the cross section is right according to the vendor - they went out and checked it for me. I have gotten it from two vendors and they both have the sparklies, but some are much smoother than the others.

Serves me right for jumping on the freakin' band wagon again!
sorry that's a drag.
Not just verbal because they announced here that it was curdled and that they had two hundred lbs. so if what they had is not curdled I'm sure they will pay for the shipping both ways and refund your money. On top of that don't blame yourself .......... why wouldn't you believe them ?

Who has purchased the Curdled Ivory and know how it reacts . I don't want to sell it as Curdled Ivory if it isn't. I know the production dates are different than what Mike F. stated.03/03/08
Mine are 31/03/08 and02/06/08 both look.
I have a bunch of labeled "dirty ivory' from years ago. Is this the same, as I am getting ready to sell it and would love a good description as I haven't used it for years either.
if it's from years ago, then no, it isn't the same, but it may be just as nice.
I had some shorts of Effetre Dk. Ivory from a few years ago. It had the sparkles and it curdled really nice. The rods felt very rough.
I have the same that Becky posted (post 51), the very rough rods with lots of sparklies and have the ones from Frantz (bought from someone else though) that are very smooth and very dark on the inside with some white and some transparent and no sparklies.
I have a pic from Frantz's but please note that it is 10pm overhere so i took the pic inside having the ivory on my lap without flash so i made the pic brighter.

I just got two lbs from ABR yesterday. I looked at it an thought, that does not look right. I haven't tried it yet. It's seriously windy from the east and that's the side of the house my fan exhausts to.
This seems way to shiny.
Oops, not such a good pic, i was afraid of that, sorry. It reacts fanstastic with silver and curdles really nice :)

you're welcome Carolyn--we had unexpected guests so I couldn't mail it today, but for sure Monday morning! Thank you!!
Beadzz and Squid--my Frantz rods are identical. It is really hard to see in this photo because it is nighttime here, but the Frantz Curdled Ivory rods are smaller diameter and more tan than the Phoenix Art Glass rods. The bumps are bigger on the PAG rods too.
in the cross section there is more transparent in the PAG rods, and when you melt it, more of that nice amber comes through and the curdles seem deeper(just by a hair) there is more sparkles(or larger ones?) also, but they are not present when the beads come out of the kiln. I misreported the matte texture of the Frantz rods. They look smoother and appear matte, but are shiny as well, just not as shiny as the PAG rods....

ABR has a 15% charge on returns.
I know this because I ordered Fossil light, and was told they were out, and was given the option of canceling my order. I did so.
It shipped 5 days, 3 business days later. When I received the glass it was darker than any other dark Fossil I've received (remember, I ordered Fossil light). When I called to return my canceled order graciously  offered to not charge the 15% restocking fee, but they told me that shipping both ways was my problem, even though the order was canceled before it shipped.
Which reminds me, I still don't have my refund and need to go find the paperwork for my credit card dispute.

I'm gonna wait as well, got 2 pounds from ABR and it's different from the few curled ivory rods I already had :(.
I used a rod of the stuff from ABR and it seemed to curdle pretty good. I'll see tomorrow when I open the kiln.
I checked the rods I got from Frantz and the ABR and neither of them have sparklies, but if you look at the beads I made from the Frantz stuff, it's pretty darned curdled, no?
You know, I don't think you can go so much by what the rods look like. I've gotten silver glass that was completely different colors in the rod from the same batch and I've had red copper green that was green and red stripes and all red with green in the middle and they did the same thing when I melted them.
So, I don't know if the sparklies are vital to the curdling.

I just received some curdled ivory from ABR and, fingers crossed, it's looking promising. I did a quick "melt the end of a rod and press gently" test on the Curdled Ivory and regular dark ivory. The CI, with minimal heat, is looking like it wants to burn. I will play more tomorrow.

I don't think so either, but it was a means to identify if the ivory was from the same batch...
but if it the sparkles are created through temperature shift like aventurine, then it may or may not be present throughout the whole batch.....(just as aventurine sparklies vary depending on what part of the melt it is from....)

it should curdle by itself with no help....it takes a minute to show up, but it does....
the fuming or silver glass will make the black veins but the curdles should show without any silver....
I am curious about Squid's findings too....will be interesting...

I make a lot of these beads as part of an item I do for Bar and Bat Mitzvah gifts and I was really hoping the curdled ivory would preform differently than my regular Moretti Dark Ivory from our local Sydney supplier. I made the 4 beads exactly the same using only a graphite marver to shape the beads. I did notice that the Curdled Ivory melted quicker and, if I wasn't paying attention, it would drip off the rod. With the finished product thought, sadly, I didn't notice much of a difference. The beads on the left are made with Dark Ivory and the beads on the right are with the Curdled Ivory from ABR.

OKie dokie - I tested the last Dark Ivory that I got. I got it from Mountain Glass Arts - it does not have the sparkly bits in it that the Curdled I got from Frantz and LB Supplys, but it does web nicely. It is not as silver reactive.
I think it is really nice ivory. I will try to post pics tomorrow of my experiments with it and Curdled next to each other in the same bead.

I got to play with mine (from ABR and Reenie) a little and I don't yet see the difference between the "curdled" and the ivory I've had for three years or so. Maybe the ivory made between those batches wasn't as reactive? I'm happy that I have a nice stock of good ivory, though. You never know what might come with the next batch.

I bought some from ABR at first I thought it wasn't curdled. Now I think it was just a mixed batch like maybe right smack in the middle of the pulls. Some is just really nice ivory, some curdles beautifully. And no, I can't tell which until I melt it.

Good question, Kevan -- you might have to try another one without any silver or silvered glass to see if it breaks up the same way. Another excuse for a great goddess!
I did notice the sparkles when I first got some of this glass last summer, and asked if anyone else noticed that. But it doesn't see to me that this so-called curdled batch is all *that* different from those over the last few years, in the finished product.
That said, my tolerance for variation between batches has shot sky high working with all these silvered colors, lol! We get variation *within* a batch, not just between batches. That can make you crazy -- I am living proof. ;->
Does anyone think that maybe there is no curdled ivory and that we have all been played? lol
