How do you get the gold lustre? What other colors do you like it with?

I haven't seen a gold lustre. Who has it?

It's a Gaffer reduction color, somewhat similar to Iris Gold. To get the luster effect, just expose it (very briefly) to a highly reducing flame right before you kiln it. Also, try it on an amber base; you can get a very pretty reaction that way, without reducing.

I have attempted to get the reduction effect by flashing it through a reducing flame. I think I overdid it though. I got a very ugly muted blah color. Then the next time I sat down to torch I looked at my rod and it had a beautiful gold luster on one side near the end, so I had apparently gotten it to reduce correctly, but not sure how.

To reduce I am turning up my propane to get a long (1 inch) yellow flame from the nozzle. The rest of the flame is still blue. I am flashing my bead through the yellow part of the flame.

Having never seen someone actually reduce something I am assuming that is the way based on reading.

It's very easy to over-reduce this color, and then you get a dull leaden grey; I usually expose it to the reducing flame for only a second. Just in, out, done. You may want to play with timing and with the chemistry of your flame to see what flame works best on your torch, too. Maybe a more reducing flame will work better.

Deb.. thank you for asking this question and Kalera? Thank you for the answer and the specifics..
I've searched all over the internet and found nothing (except movie review bytes about "gaffers" actors who are "gold" and make-up with "Lustre" (I kid you not!)

Should have known better and searched here first!

Number one resource for any Gaffer Glass question is the Gaffer Girls themselves. They answer the phones at GafferUSA and are a dream to talk to. They use the glass so they know all about how to work it and give their information freely.

Ask me how I know??? Jess is my Gaffer Best Bud!!! I ordered transparents and Gold Ruby and she made sure I knew how dense the trans are and specifically how to work the Gold Ruby without making it go "livery". She then sent notes along as well.

This group is Top Notch in my book.

Thanks Laura...
Since I bought the glass in the Garage Sale and not from the GG Glass wimmins.. I never even thought of asking them about it.. just thought I'd do a lil ole search and find what I was looking for, right? (wrong ;}.

But Deb and Kalera had it covered: asked then answered

P.S. I am sure that, when I have the funds available.. I will get into all sorts of interesting interactions with the GGG as they've got lots of stuff I wants! *g*

Would love to hear your tips on this particular if you cared to share!

I have had great luck just making solid color beads with the gaffer gold luster. I reduce mine by turning the oxy down and very quickly flashing in the back of the flame.

Emma,

Let me look my notes up. It may be on their site as well at www.gafferusa.com

But you want to work it last, so it doesn't garage for a long period of time (I also put mine in the middle of my kiln 'cause my heating elements are at the sides). And I beleive anneal at a lower temp. But I have the notes on the bag it came in ... just in case I forgot.

Rachel,

Even if you buy it from the garage sale the ladies at the 800 number for Gaffer USA would still give you tons of help. They *want* you to love their glass and get the best results out of it. And if you got it from the garage sale it started at Gaffer NZ originally!!

And I know what you mean. I desparately want to try the "Mushroom" color but the gang in NZ never manages to get it on the ship. (toe taps)

Laura.. thank you for that idea (I never really thought that through but it makes purrfect sense!) and for the encouragement.

I am definitely one of those types who is all about finding out as much extra info as I possibly can on (insert whatever has caught my attention at that particular moment here ;} ..I read manuals and whatever other information I can gather.. right up to (and including ) the instructions printed on a pinball machine which tell you how to rack up the most points!
