The price on silver varies. Monster Slayer is a great place to buy silver wire, imo.

The last time I bought a huge amount of wire, I bought from Indian Jewelry Supply, great prices. Fortunately, I bought enough that it got me over the mile high prices of late!
Thunderbird is always worth a check, too, as is Metalliferous (sp?)

I would use dead soft for viking knit. It hardens as you use it. If you start with half hard, its going to get pretty brittle

When buying wire, you look at the spot cost of the metal plus the fabrication charge, then there is a quantity discount, usually over 4 or five ounces.
In the case of Monsterslayer, 22 ga. sterling, round dead soft is the spot price plus $5 fabrication. Friday silver closed at $10.21 a Troy ounce, so expect to pay $15.21 an ounce for small quantities. I just checked Rio Grande prices and their fabrication charge for the same wire was $5.11, making the Troy ounce cost $15.32 for small quantities. The spot price changes daily, and you price gets locked in at various points in the order process, some at the time your card is charged, some when the order if filled, check around. Just definitely not the previous day's price
For 22 ga. there are 33.3 feet per Troy ounce. Now you can calculate the value of other deals available.
I buy items from both of those suppliers. Rio Grand has a wider variety of supplies and stuff but requires an account. Monsterslayer had very competitive prices and does not require an account. There are lots of other suppliers, and now you compare prices.
You might look around to make sure you want to use 22 ga. for the project you are doing. I would have guessed a smaller diameter, dead soft wire.

Thanks all for the information!
Have a wonderful holiday!!!

Naomi,
I found a scrap of a viking knit I made a long time ago. I used 26 gauge, dead soft wire. I recall it now, after my first effort I retired the technique. I made a beautiful chain, but it was time consuming. I made my own draw plate just by drilling different size holes in a board and using a countersink on one side to make a tapered opening. I was amazed as the chain transformed from the ugly thing to an amazing chain when I had it pulled to it's final size.
I had to anneal two or three times during the pulling process which was difficult for such a fine gauge wire. There was a fine line between annealed and melted. I finished with a magnetic clasp.
If you plan on using 22 gauge, drawing it down will be harder to do. (My first thought was a car bumper draw plate and an elephant pulling, but my mind wanders:-)

For Viking Knit I use 24 gauge fine silver generally but will do 26 as well. I would only use dead soft for this. Even using a 3 or so foot piece at a time, it's going to get work hardened pretty quickly. I can't imagine pulling 22G either! If you use 3 to 4 foot pieces, you shouldn't have to anneal the wire as you go. One ounce of 24G wire will make you about an 18 inch chain after it's pulled.
Thank you friends,
Whish you all a happy new year!!!

Their fabrication charge for 22 ga. round wire is $5.45 a Troy ounce, making it the most expensive of the places listed here. I have purchased from them in the past, but not for a long time.
