View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : what is SIS??
This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm a newbie so I'm still learning! I was reading some posts today and saw "SIS" mentioned several times.......what is it!?!?!? Thanks!
It stands for "silvered ivory stringer", made by heating a gather of ivory, burnishing silver leaf onto it, then pulling stringer from it.

So Glad you asked this...I knew what SIS was, but my question is this...after you burnish, then pull the stringer, are there sharp edges left ON the stringer? It's like the silver pulls, stops then pulls again, and I AM making sure to keep an even pull, I do it all the time without the silver....??? HMMM??? Thanks!

I think that the easiest way to make SIS is to:
1. Use commercial ivory stringer.
2. Moisten the top 1/2 of the stringer with a wet paper towel, just enough to dampen it.
3. Roll the top half of the stringer on a sheet of silver leaf, curling the silver leaf around the stringer.
4. Heat the combination (stringer + silver) in the outside of the flame (just briefly) in order to burnish.
Hope that helps.

Just want to add to use caution when working with metals. Use good ventilation and don't inhale the fumes. Have fun - it's one of my favorites. Laura
