Compatibility

I know there's a way to pull stringer from two different rods to see if they are compatible...but I don't know how to tell!

Put two pieces of glass side by side and melt them in the torch. Use a tweezer and pull out a stringer of both pieces.

If the stringer curves at all when broken off, the glass is incompatible.

Note that this is a very rough test, and should not be relied upon for COE's that are less than 4-5 numbers apart.
