I've been lampworking for some while now, and yet every time I come on this board there are new things I hear about everyone talking about that I have no idea what it is...

So... I've decided that rather than being embarrassed to ask and remain in the dark... I'll take the leap of just throwing it out there and asking anyways!

What the hell is shampoo glass? I heard this in another thread and the name alone has me intrigued... I MUST KNOW!

Also, I have a shitload of copper mesh that people have been sending me and have no idea what-so-ever how to use it.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks.

Shampoo glass is a type of Czech glass (as far ask I know :)) that when worked leaves an opalescent sheen on the surface that resembles the look of shampoo.

That's about all I know :D

You can find it at www.checkglass.com

Cheers!

You can encase the copper mesh for a cool effect. The copper will turn red/purple/pink under the hot glass AFTER it first turns a heart stopping black.

Yee pretty much nailed the Shampoo glass.

I got some at the Gathering last summer. It has to be worked slow and cool. Takes forever, but really cool glass.

I didn't know about the copper mesh thing. Sounds cool. I guess it's something else I need to buy, sigh.

There is nothing wrong with asking a question. Nobody knows everything.

(I didn't know what shampoo glass was either.)

Is the only requirement of using copper mesh that it must be 100% copper?

Good question Julie...
Like.... is it ok to use with any coe? or just 104?

Both of my copper mesh beads were made with Moretti glass. (Well, Lauscha for the clear). But I've made others with Gaffer, too. It's pretty much like any metal inclusion/foil/leaf. I think it does need to be 100% pure copper or else you end up dealing with impurities. You need to be GENTLE with the copper or it will curl up and melt into a blob. To make both of those beads I made my base bead, heated one spot so it was glowing/near-molten, then basically shoved a corner of the copper into the sticky glass to anchor it, worked it around the bead with tweezers, and encased it using the "molten glob" method (make a gather soupy and glom it on as fast as possible).

The shampoo glass seems to be compatible with Moretti...at least the stuff I got from CR Loo (several years ago) was. I made a bead with Czech mint green decorated with white shampoo stringer and after 4 years it's never popped off. I've never tried encasing it, but it at least seems be be willing to be lightly decorated or part of the decorations.

Karen... I am laughing hysterically at your "glom it on" phrasing.
That is a word that frequented our household while I was growing up and when I say it now.. people look at me like I'm nuts.
Lol... thanks for bringing back a funny memory for me!
