Bubby, I'm so glad you read through it. My biggest concern is that it is clear enough to really understand, and be able to follow the instructions with no difficulty!

Mary Beth, glad our times met well. It was time for me to write it too. I had been thinking about it for a long time.

Don't forget, if anyone needs extra help or is confused about anything, I will try my best to help you. Just let me know K?

Cynthia - it looks absolutely wonderful.
I have been hanging out in the hopes that you'd do a tutorial!

Unfortunately when our stupid NZ $$ decided to go below the 50 cents against the US $$ - it kind of mucked up all my plans.
Still, it will rise again....one day.

Boy am I keeping everything crossed that all of the recent wonderful tutorials will still be around then!!! :)

Just ordered - Question about the FREE Adobe Reader - Does that mean if I have a purchased Adobe Package that it will not work or will any PDF reader work?

Mine opened in the Adobe reader that was already on my computer. It seems strange that there might be someone out there without it already but I'm sure there is. If you don't already have it you can download the free version but any of them will work.

I looked mine over last night and it is wonderful! I can't get to the torch until Wednesday night so I'm just dreaming about it now.

Cynthia, you rock! I love your "Keeper of the Thicket" tutorial. I bought it yesterday and I had to try it straight away. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques. I highly recommend it, 5 star tute. The instructions are well written/ easy to follow and is complimented by step by step clear graphics/photos.

Here's the result of my efforts at the torch yesterday. They are nothing like the original but I thought I'd show it here :) Fresh from the kiln. I'm yet to clean them lol!

glassactcc
2009-03-10, 9:22pm
Susan, that is very good and I love the kitty idea, it is a great twist on the original creation, and I think that is wonderful. I know it is difficult to work with a large bead when your not used to it, but the smaller the bead is, the more difficult it becomes to add all of the fine details.

You know this really IS a great tutorial! For more reasons than just the final out come. It will definitely challenge and for some take you out of your comfort zone. I had sooo many "Duh" moments practicing yesterday and learned so much from my mistakes.

I don't think you could say I made any "Keepers" yesterday. My first try looked more like those spooky creatures from Land of the Lost, the second looked like Bob from those male enhancement commercials. But it's all good! It inspired me and taught me some techniques I can definitely use to accomplish those ideas that keep nagging in the back of my mind!

I just wish I could remember NOT to use rubio on ivory.

Hi Kerri. It is a bead that requires an intermediate skill level and basic knowledge of lampworking. But if your anything like me, that description would never stop me:rolleyes: My Mom always tells me that I start from the back of the book, which is true. I think even if your bead does not turn out perfect, it is a great learning tool. I would not hesitate at all for newer lampworkers to try out. Just don't be disappointed if you can't get it to look like you want on the first tries. Practice, practice practice.

Right now I'm working on making murrini, thanks to MIKE H and I am very uncomfortable doing them. But I'm pluggin' along and one day, I'll get it down. So there you go. I'm out of my comfort zone too:shock:

Wumpmonk, great minds think alike. My feline keeper was in the kiln when you've posted yours.

Here's the result of my second batch. The feline keeper is double the size of the other two. I've added my handmade rose murrinis and shaped it into hearts for embellishments.

159540

The alien keeper is a test bead for my alien bead exchange in the other forum. I've added a handmade smilie murrini at the end of the hat - he appeared troubled here. I reckon the alien scared him lol! I've added ears to the alien.

Haaaa....Anouk, there is nothing wrong with hot pink cheeks:shock: My tester Toni, told me I should put this bit of information in the tut, but I forgot. I use "Light Petal Pink" for the cheeks.

The hat pull is a bit tricky. I wish I could show you in person. Can you come over?:-P It's described exactly the way I do it but you know how it is sometimes with pictures and words. Not as nice as watching.

Now get those "Keepers" out of the kiln and I'll be anxiously awaiting their arrival.

Well, here goes. I didn't know I was going to try this till I sat down at the torch and I didn't have the tutorial in my studio to refer to. I had nothing prepared, just used what I had and did it in Bullseye glass. I think I'll switch to Effetre next time because their ivory is more opaque. Also I didn't have pink so I used purple enamel for the blush (and I got some on the eyes). And here's a tip: make sure your pick is clean before you shape the mouth and do follow the directions for melting in the blush. I forgot about the blush until the end and then, after running around the studio frantically searching for enamel before the bead cooled too much, I hit the enamel too fast. Enough excuses  Here she is.

Cynthia, you are right they take on a personality. I think this one is a gyspy.

Thank you Cynthia, you made my day.

I want to point out that Cynthia's tutorial is so well written that I was able to remember most of it after reviewing the night before I made the bead. Since I didn't have the instructions with me, I did forget a couple things (like when to put the chin in place) but I couldn't have done it if her instructions weren't so clear to me while I read them. That said, I think it would be a little less stressful if you have them nearby while you work. I'll make a couple more of these before I try to branch out into my own version of this bead but I highly recommend it if you want to try something new!

Thanks so much for doing this one Cynthia. I wish I could come take a class with you someday.

Yesterday I ried to make a Keeper and I had so much fun!
I know I have to practice a lot to make it look good, but it's so nice to make these Keepers!
I made 5 of yhem and the last one is whit coppermesh. I wanted to make a normal lentil, but the coppermesh didn't go right so I made a fase on the other side
The big purple "Keeper" at the top is the firts one I tried to make...

My first sad little Keeper just went into the kiln....I forgot the tassel on the end of the cap!

This tut is excellent....well written and specific without rambling....but I do need to go back and re-read and see when/where to use the goldstone stringer......

Cocobeads...your "Keepers" are great. I really love the one with the orange hat and the copper mesh bead gone "Keeper" is just outrageous. I love it. Great job and wow, you were busy, I can't believe how many you made.

Lynn, I have done that before. Actually, I have forgotten the nose several times. You know if that happens, you can just pop the bead back into the kiln and at the end of your beading session, pull it out and just fix what you forgot. Lord knows I have done that too many times to count.

Now I would really like to see what is in that kiln of yours so please, please post!

I don't feel so bad now. 15 minutes after I popped it in the kiln I realized I forgot the nose. I pulled it back out and added the nose. The only problem I had with that was a few of my stringers blew off. I still absolutely love it and can't wait to try another one.

glassactcc
2009-03-14, 8:47pm
Yep, that has also happened to me too:rolleyes: The stringer popping off I mean. At the end of the whole process when the bead is completely finished, I just sit there and heat the bead very well all the way around to make sure everything is really attached and nothing is apt to pop off. I really look at the stringer and make sure there are no spaces under any of them too. Going over bumpy stuff with stringer means sometimes it's not anchored down in all of the nooks and crannies so I take my brass paddle and push the stringer down where ever it's not attached. It's only taken me about 10 years to figure that out:shock: After making a gazzilion of these guys, only now do I have a good success rate to where they don't have to go back into the kiln. I probably should have had a step by step and I would have never forgotten to add body parts:confused:

Hi Cynthia;

I tried again, this time with Effetre. I know she's got problems, this tutorial is great for learning heat control (she wasn't "born" with her eyes looking to the side like that). And I think I'm going to file my pick till it's shiny so I don't get that unwanted crud on my glass. But I have a question....this time I did get the enamel blush on her when I was supposed to and she still has freckles. Do you think I'm getting my application too thin? I really did make sure to let the enamel melt in slowly while I was working on other areas.

Heee....Donna, I better check my email!

As for the enamel question. Are you putting a pretty good coating of it on? I really heat the cheeks up well, and then dip. I have only used the pink though, so maybe the color you are using is too contrasting. Just make sure there is a good coating of it, and if you need to re-dip later, that is fine too. Just make sure that when you are trying to melt the enamel in, you do it slowly and in a cool flame. Be careful though not to let your bead cool to much. If you do it at the end, just sit and warm the bead all around while the enamel is melting in.

Ok for your amusement tonite!!!
First we have Wanda, she was the first I made and when I was putting the dots on her head, while the dots were hot they looked like those little pink spongie rollers!! Wanda has a little bit of a mouth problem!!
Second was Leon the Leprechan, well it is almost St Patty's day. Leon is a little different but we love him anyway. He has a little nose and mouth problem!!!
Then last but not least is Judy the Jester. I think while Judy's mouth was being reconstructed, she lost her nares!!! Don't ya hate it when that happens!!! I might try and make Judy into a doll of some kind and send her to a friend who loves jesters.

Jennifer. He's adorable. I love his face.=D>=D> Such a great idea. Thanks for sharing him.

Thanks Cynthia. The Cowardly Lion started out as a leopard. It's got leopard spots that are not very visible in the front, under the mane.

When I am nervous about doing something I'm unsure of, I jump in without too much thought so I don't give up before I even start. I didn't think about what texture would go around the leopard face; leopards are so smooth. So I added the lion's mane, which pretty much covered up all the work I'd done to create the spots. If I did a lion again, I would first pull lots of encased stringer and do a finer textured mane with the stringer rather than the way I did the one above. Not sure yet how to do the leopard. I took an art-doll class a few years ago and have a leopard in mind for a design. Maybe it will be a leopard with a hat or a tiara ;-)

I'm learning a lot about shaping glass. I highly recommend this tutorial.

Yes, the clown nose takes away the nostril problem, hehe. The one I did nostrils on sort of reminds me of a pig nose (not that there is anything wrong with that!)

The "Whippersnappers" I make smaller than the keepers. Of course, not as small as yours. I don't think my hands would allow me to do that. We are on other ends of the spectrum on that score:biggrin:
Oh, a Whippersnapper, of course! #-o Silly me!

I also thought Cynthia's was the one one the left! Incredible job Sue! And I love the one of Cynthia's that you got! The teeth and freckles crack me up! Reminds me of me when I was a kid pre-braces ;-) I really need to pull out my tutorial and get busy on these! I bought it and sadly it's been sitting there all this time. What I need is a Cynthia class! Cynthia, you coming anywhere near Arkansas in the near future?
Thanks so much! I :love:love:love: you! :D

I too would love a Keeper class Cynthia! And I can come to you. LOL

Thank you, Jo! I really should have put a banana in his hands but near the end is when I seem to mess everything up so he didn't get a banana.

I turned around and made another one just like it, no banana, they look like monkey twins!

I love all your work. I visited your website and saw your gorgeous bottles and jewelry.

I did this one a while ago and got around to taking pics today. As you can see, heat control is very important and I haven't mastered it yet!

But, this so far is my best shot and can't wait till I make another one better hopefully.

Hey Carol, he looks great. I love the hat. He looks like he's in the wind. Heat control is the most important skill in bead making IMO.

Cynthia,

Thanks, I keep meaning to bend those hats down at the end but always forget. I like that you think it looks like it is blowing in the wind though.

I'm going to make my next one on the middle of the mandrel and see if it will help keep one side from sagging too much in the cheek area.

another thing you could try is to frequently change hands while building to face. That helps keep it in balance which is a heat control thing too. That's what I do.

Sounds like great advice, I'll change hands and use middle of the mandrel, too, lol.

Carol, it does look like his hat is blowing in the wind, I like it!

Okay Cynthia, I don't know how I manage it, but they keep getting smaller. Is my stringer too small? What? LOL

Earlier I shared my white winter one beside the one I managed to snag from Cynthia.
Now, here is the white winter one next to my newest strawberry sweetie.
I really need eye practice. And the "black" dots are actually green adventurine.

You should see the tiny little s'elfs I have been making, and they keep getting smaller and smaller, too, but aren't you trying to make your keepers smaller?

I'm making the s'elfs for my 4 sisters to cheer them up after losing our baby sister. I only have one more to go but I'm sure I won't stop there. I'm going to write letters with each one about how they should love their s'elfs, lol.

I'm sorry if this should be in another thread but thought you would see it here just as well.

Hope to try my hand at another keeper soon, too!

No, I'm going to post pics of my S'elfs right here in this thread

Just kidding.

I will try to take pics tomorrow of all my s'elfs and then make necklaces out of them and send them to their new homes. I think there are sets of twins among them because I decorated some alike.

Oh wow, there's more! Sue, those are just too stinkin' cute. I love the strawberry, what a good idea! And the Winter White is beautiful! It's funny because mine start changing with the seasons too. It's like playing dress up. I was trying to think of a Halloween themed one but for some reason, they just don't go.

Carol, wonderful job on your "Keeper" I love the small pink flowers and he's got such a sweet looking face. I have to go and make one pretty soon so I don't forget how. It's funny, after not making a certain bead, I get rusty and do things in the wrong order.

now...........I'm wondering

Cynthia if you just ignored my question about another tutorial or if you didn't see it? lol

How about an Owl tutorial? I love your amazing owls, Cynthia!

I made an owl long ago and one of my grandsons liked it so much I gave it to him but I really miss it. Isn't it funny how attached we get to our little creatures?

I just ETA that I loved my owl but would much rather make an owl like yours, Cynthia!

Cynthia, what about a pumpkin patch keeper?

2009-09-19, 8:38pm
You guys have got my work cut out for me. Actually, I did see your post Carol (LOL)! The owls are so new that I can't even get them right all of the time. Yup, some come out looking a bit interesting, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I think the hardest part of making a bead is to be able to repeat it. To get the steps down so everything flows. Then I actually have to write the steps down for myself:rolleyes:

Tillie, I was really thinking about how I could make a fall "Keeper" other than just the colors. I thought about making a pumpkin as a hat but have not tried it yet. I have to get in there and do it. Unfortunately, it's suppose to be very hot this week, so I think I'm going to take a bead break. I think YOU should make one and post it here so we all can be inspired:-P

Oh, Cynthia that's ok. I will just make me another corny looking owl, LOL!

I'll put a pic of them in a new gallery I'm thinking of calling the "Goofy Gallery" for people who are not newbies but not gallery worthy either, hehe.

That's a great idea. "The Goofy Gallery". I'm sure I can come up with a few good ones:lol: Like the dragon I made the other day. He would feel right at home there.

Oh, I bet it is cute, I would love to see that dragon.

Would you be so kind as to start the goofy gallery and I will follow right behind ya.

In my case I would have to warn that it was "image heavy" because I have so many. Everything I make would be comfortable there.

I finally tried the Keeper - after almost a year of trepidation about trying this tutorial!! :) Here is my first attempt - Freesia the Floozy (due to her makeup being rather mussed; she looks so happy about it I can only assume she is fresh from a mossy assignation, lol!!) :)

You both are so sweet!!! *blushing here* :) But it is not me so much as it is Cynthia's Wonderfully written tutorial!! I hope that she writes more tutorials as hers are priceless!!! :)

I bought this tutorial ages ago and tried it today. Everyone has posted such cute Keepers!!! I'm going to bring the cute factor to a screeching halt. lol
So....I was going for a kind of Greenman Keeper. You know leaves and such. Welllllll what I got was The Keepers of The Pesticides, Herbicides and Toxic Chemical Shed. Here we have Hemlock and Poison Ivan. Oh yes indeedy, those faces are green too.

I had a super fun time at the torch today! Even though these guys are not what I was shooting for, I'm going to keep trying the Greenman thing. Only next time I'd like to keep them from drinking the chemicals and melting their eyeballs. lol

Really fun Cynthia! Thanks!

Ooooo Rebecca!!! They came out GREAT!!!! I LOVE them!!! I've got to try this style again - I've been collecting pictures of the Old North Wind and have been trying to figure out a way to use this face technique with it!! Aren't Cynthia's tutorials Great!!?!! :)

glassactcc
2011-01-30, 8:50am
Rebecca, OMG they are NOT the pesticide "Keepers". Your description of them had me trying to swallow my coffee before it was too late. They turned out so darling. But I do have to say I love the names you gave them. The green lips really seem to work. I would have never thought of that.

Joan, you are so kind. I'm glad you like the tut. Ahheemmm...you did see the last page, didn't you? Such a professional I am.

You're way too kind Cynthia. lol The green lips just kind of went with the green skin. I used CIM Dirty Martini for the face and pretty much CIM colors for the rest. Never having used much of it before, I've got to say it is wonderful for sculpture! Kind of stiff like BE or Lauscha.

glassactcc
2011-01-30, 10:07am
Oh, I'll have to try the CIM. I don't have any of the Dirty Martini. That color would look great for sculls and stuff like that. It looks like porcelain or bone. I love it. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to order some. It's very hard to find a good face color. I use the Vetro Pastel Ivory but that is hard to find. I was lucky enough to find a stash of it so I'm good, but I like the color you used too. Really, the only other color that I have seen that I like for faces.

Three Muses Glass
2011-01-31, 7:38pm
OK, one more from me. The dirty martini kind of did that green thing today...you know the line thing most greens do? I thought it was immune to that but I guess not. It's not really pronounced the way some greens get but still...
Oh and Cynthia? How the heck do you do these?!? When this was getting finished I was shaking like a teeny bopper at a Justin Beiber concert. And an hour of prep (off mandrel leaves and stuff) and an hour to make it! I just don't know how the heck you could do a triple!!!
So anyway, I tried the Greenman thing. No torch for me for about 3 weeks and had to get this idea outta my brain until I get back. I'm not quite but almost happy with him. I had some eye issues again and you can tell I'm not brave enough to cover up the eyes with cheeks yet. lol

I love the leaf hat. That is a great addition. Yup, the addition lines. That is the problem with the face colors too. Mostly every color leaves addition marks. Ok Rebecca, suck it up and cover the eyes. That's my most unfavorite part of the whole thing. I have been known to dance wildly at the torch too. I'm sure it looks really cute. Good thing I torch ALONE! Oh, that's some perfect eye liner.
