does anyone know how to go about making these?

Do you have a picture or are you possibly talking about the pleated beads?

cadia

can you put a link to a photo of one? I'm not sure what you mean.

I'm pretty sure you're what you are talking about. Just make a barrelbead and encase from left to right but make sure the coils of clear are NOT touching eachother ( sort of like bad encasing on purpose)

Melt in your clear and reshape your barrel. Now encase your barrelbead the correct way ( the coils of clear should be overlapping to make sure there are no gaps between your clear)

Melt in and voila!

edit to add, if you are talking about the beads with the ridges in it like this one you'll need to use another technique

Make a base bead and make cuts in your bead using cattwalks groove tool or just a razor tool. Now encase it and voila.

Aubs, that is what I thought, I described how you can make that type of bead. There should be a tutorial under tips and techniques somewhere, try a search for tornado or hurricane bead

They don't have to be with so many "ribs" either.
I like them with 4 or 5. Here's some of my beads in
Boro:
(available in my Etsy shop, of course )

Seriously - they look like they glow from the inside.
When I wear them with a black shirt, it looks like
I have an animal on my necklace .

can you do them in soft glass?

KAS

I think the ones in the tutorial were made with soft glass. I just love this style and have been looking for a tut. Thank you! Kathleen (KAS)

Those beads are beautiful, I am a blue person but that orange is really talking to me. I can't wait to play with some of the boro I am getting in the bulk buy and your photos have inspired me.

I love this style of beads. I'll never forget the first time I saw one of them. It was on the cover of the August 2003 Bead & Button magazine. There is a boro one made by Gail Crosman-Moore. She had a whole spread inside that edition and I was in LOVE.

I was tickled beyond belief when Margaret Z taught how to make them in a tutorial. (The link given earlier in this thread.) I went through a phase of making lots of them and then I petered out but seeing Karen's beautiful ones makes me want to do them again.

Mine were never any great shakes, but my skills are better now I should try again.

I've never heard them called vertebrae beads, but they really can look like that!

Great thread!

Aren't they fun to make?!!!!
I've always given Margaret credit for teaching me how to make them.
However, the ones she taught me were the ones that twisted around.
These are the same kind of look, but a little different in technique.

I've never made one of these either, maybe today I'll give it a whirl, they are really beautiful.

Yeah, mine never looked like yours. Mine were spikier. (Is that a word? LOL)

Yours look more like vertebrae with the flat edges...really cool!

Wow... very lovely, showy beads Karen!

Suzanne, Thank you for explaining the "pleat" bead and showing your beautiful bead sure helps visualize the technique. I think I'll try that!

When you make the initial "coil" is it cotinuous without touching,or individual wraps not touching? TIA

This is one my student Ceil, made yesterday. She is a beginner bead maker and this turned out great too!

I had a whole nother vision of vertebrae beads. Kinda like interconnecting spinal discs. each an individual bead. Whoa, was I wrong!

I just tried making some of these last night and they are so fun and awesome! I have to get out of my studio long enough to take pics sometime. Spring break starts this week so maybe time will come then.

The trick is to load the crap out of the initial skinny bead before you
put any clear on. Frit, silver, fobs of color. The more you put on, the
more interesting the "ribs" look when they get stretched out.

The ones I posted pics of are only one color - but the better ones
are multicolored (and sold )!

Karen do you have any photos of multi colored ones, I would love to see them.

Like I said - those ones go really fast. Ain't got none o' dem now. However,
I think I'll make a few if I can get to the torch tomorrow.

I love this type of bead! lol... When I started making that style back in 2004 I got told it was ugly so I quit making them. lol One should never let other peeps tell you what is good or not good. How the heck do they know what direction your going in with it?? lol
