Silvered Ivory Stringer Tutorial (Free!)

I just finished a tutorial on how I make silvered ivory stringer (SIS). I use this a lot in my beads and have a very specific method that I use to make them and I thought that I would share.

Bonnie, I would love to have this effect in the other COE glasses. I use a lot of 96 and I've used the ivory with it. Even very sparingly, I've had both good and bad results (cracking...).

I don't know the equivalent that could be used with Bullseye either.

Not the same as 104, but nice nonetheless. About as close as you can get. I haven't found anything in the 96 range that reacts even close.

I've never thought to make the stringer with a clear core. I'll have to give that a try.

I have been away from torching for too long. This morning I finally will take some time to enjoy myself again. I am looking at the tuts and reading all the goodies. Your SIS is different and I can't wait to try it. And your site is chock full of good stuff also. Wish I had the ability to do all that also!

I like your idea of using clear as a core, Im going to try that with my white..white seems to be too soupy for stringer control.

I use clear for most of my 104 stringers.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this tut, Rosemarie! I have been sis challenged forever and am always disappointed with my results - in fact started a thread about that some weeks ago.

There are great methods in this tut!! I never would have thought of the clear core and it is so logical, and I wouldn't doubt that that it spreads the ivory and silver nicely too. I'll bet the stringer is so much easier to control too.

Rose~ Thanks SO MUCH for sharing your SIS "recipe"! I've been disapointed with SIS, as it just didn't have enough movement and texture to it, no matter how much heat I blasted it with, how it was applied, etc. Your version with the clear core is absolutely PERFECT!! It just takes seconds in the flame for it to spread out, and the clear, plus the gap in the silver, make it look so much more textural. Thank-you!!!

I have to confess though - sometimes it is just the ivory. Some are better than others, and I'm talking about different batches of Effetre Dark Ivory.

When it's working right, it sure is fun.

Oh so glad this thread made it to the first page again or I would have missed all this golden knowledge. Wonderfully written, great photos, very easy to understand. I too can't wait to use clear as the core. I like that you left some of the ivory uncovered too. I tend to freak out when it doesn't cover completely and scramble around, almost burning myself, trying to find a tiny piece to add in. But at the same time I don't get as much movement and texture as you do Rose. I think using the clear and having some ivory showing will greatly improve my SS.

But for me there is only one way that works!!!! Yours!!!

I was ready to give up, all I ever wanted was to make organic beads, with SIS. I tried ever SIS method, none worked for me. They always turned out dark and ugly.

I studied the tut. last night, thought about it all night and then this morning I pulled a stringer and made a bead.

I have never been impressed with my SIS work. But to today, for the first time I got SIS to actually do something interesting.
