I was under the impression (I thought I read somewhere) that CIM Hades black was a really nice black that did not spread (weblike effect) easily. Well, that does not seem to be the case for me. I am using strictly black and white. I don't recall having this problem a while back when I made similar beads and now I am wondering if the problem is the white. I am using CIM's Peace white and unfortunately that is the only white I have right now. Any thoughts on this? Any suggestions for black and white glass that stay seperate from one another? I know intense black is good for this but I guess I was looking for a cheaper option when I make bigger beads on a base of black. Thanks for your help.

I have the same issues when using Hades and Peace. My solution was to go back to using Vetrofond black.

Try CiM's Tuxedo - I have never had a problem when using it with Peace and managed to get some nice name murrini with this combination devoid of spreading or webbing.

I thought that was the point of Hades, that it did spread. Haven't tried it yet but the Tuxedo dosen't

These both have a base of CiM Peace. The first cat has Vetrofond black - see how crisp the edges are? The second one was made using CiM Hades - notice the blurring around the edges of the spots. This only happens after working it a while; the spot on the tail didn't blur because it wasn't worked very long.

If you use Peace and Lauscha Black there is a very fine silvery line that forms between the black and the white. It's not very obvious to the eye unless you know to look, but it gives a nice definition between the two colors.

When I took this picture, I was testing Peace with different varieties of black, so I was trying to make the line more obvious. I've got plenty of Lauscha black, so if you want to try some, PM me your addy and I'll drop a couple of rods in the mail to you.

Have also webbing problems with Hades. Sometimes I do it intentionally, then of course I'm glad.
But what I'm wondering is ... I can't recall that I had the webbing issues (and "eating" other colors) when Hades was released at the very start. I was so happy with how it behaved! Now I'm not so thrilled any more.
I'm not sure if my expectations changed, if I work it slightly different now or if the current Hades is behaving slightly different than the old Hades.
I am not so keen on using Tuxedo because it seems awfully shocky.

I can relate to shocky Tuxedo. I put the ends in the kiln to warm them up and it goes fine after that.

I have a really neat black from Precision that doesn't web. It's called Black Jettum.

The only time I've experienced webbing with Hades is when it's aggressively heated. I work rather hot to begin with, so it's not tough for me to do. I've made a LOT of black & white dot beads recently, and never had a problem. However, working with stringer and doing raked beads, with a lot of heating and cooling, will definitely cause it to web. Specifically, black stringer on a white bead webs, but white stringer on a black bead behaves much better.

Ack! I've been having the same problem lately. I've always used Hades as my black and it performed wonderfully on any white I put it on. But the last batch I got either webs horribly or turns transparent grey when I put it over white. The worst part is I've got a custom order for black and white wedding jewelry due on Friday and don't have time to order anything different. I'm going to have to go through my stash and melt all the rods until I find one that behaves properly! Hey everyone,

I test for Messy and here is what I have come to notice while making my beads....

Hades was made to be like Intense black so it was supposed to have the webbing effect. I have found that if you don't intensely heat it you can keep it from webbing.

Tuxedo is my FAVORITE new black! It stays nice and black there is NO silvering. It is a bit softer than Hades which I really like.

I have found from my testing that you can use Tuxedo with Lauscha Vanilla ice, intensly heat it and it won't spread.

It seems to me that a lot of the spreading comes from giving the glass intense heat.

Much love,
