Hi guys,
thanks to your help from my last post I am getting much better at encasing without "dirt" in it. :p
Sometimes, however my clear turns a little yellowish :pout: especially at the "corners" (can corners be round? #-o). Some of you suggested using Vetrofond clear instead of Moretti. I will try that next. While doing my research I found that Vetrofond is a bit cheaper than Moretti and was wondering:
- is all vetrofond compatible with moretti?
- are vetrofond blues as temperamental as moretti (they love to turn orangy or turn muddy easily for me :-x)
- how do you like working with vetrofond?
and lastly...where does one get the best deal on it?

Thanks
Tanja (newbie on HH)

You're turning the blues orangy because your heat is too high, or you're too low in the HH flame. I have a tutorial on my site that shows where to work, give or take. Once you find the sweet spot you'll be fine.

I like either Vetro or Moretti, but it seems that they react different with silver - Vetro makes it turn golder - so keep that in mind. Always clean any clear rods before using them, and pull off the scummy end. That should help.

Past that, I like either company's color range. JameyLynn at Howaco has great everyday prices if you're ordering small quantities. I also shop at a variety of other vendors depending on what sales they're having.

They're both compatible, but watch/avoid the alabastros and opalinos as they're tempermental.

Have fun! :)

Hi Tanja!

I had trouble with clears on my HH. Even when I got "good" clears, I was still getting scum. It is very likely that you are working too close to the torch. Back up in the flame just a little bit. I recommend Moretti Super Clear for HH users. It was crystal clear with 0 scum and 0 bubbles on a HH for me, and it's cheap! If you still have trouble with clear on a HH, I suggest using a very pale transparent for encasing. Very very pale greens, blues, turquoises, and purples look really nice as encasing, they don't scum or bubble as easily, and sometimes they make the colors inside pop even more, depending on what you're encasing.

The orange you're seeing in the blues (I'm assuming turquoises?) is the copper coming out. Turquoises have a high copper content and have a tendency to reduce in the flame. Since the HH by nature is a pretty reducing flame, there's not too much you can do about it. However, you can get a liquid rust remover and gently swab it over the bead with a qtip or a cotton ball and it will get rid of that orange, as well as make the entire bead brighter. If you leave it on too long it will start to etch the bead.

Vetrofond is compatible with Moretti... in theory. I've never had an issue with incompatibility between the 2. I have noticed that a lot of the Vetro odds are very shocky, so make sure you pre-heat them well so you don't have flying hot glass everywhere.

My favorite vendors for Moretti & Vetro (as well as all the other glass brands) are www.morettiandmore.com
www.flamedame.com
www.flamekissedglass.com

I order from those 3 mostly, and which one I choose depends on the other glass I need at the time.

Oooh... that's wickedly tempting, thanks for sharing. I was wondering what they'd have this week. :)
