Does anyone else use this? If so do you have problems with it breaking everything days after annealing? Ive been using it for a while and it seemed to break every twelvth piece. But i just started to do gold and silver fumed implosion piece backed with china black. Every single piece i made but one broke three days later ? ? ? wtf I don't know whats going on. Could it just be the china black? Any feedback would be appreciate. I have a pretty good knowledge of glass and why it breaks usually...i just can't fiqure this out.

I think it's probably an incompatability issue. The China boro is not made of the same recipe as the simax, pyrex, or shcott......It's cheap glass hence you get crappy results....I do like how thick the china black stays but seriously if you are doing nicer pieces go with onyx (my fav black)


other factors could have to do with your flame atmosphere (too much reduction can cause checking) or your annealing cycle

Onyx is my favourite 2, but i was so excited when this china black came out. Have you had this problem when you have used china black?

the china black varies from batch to batch. i've used many pounds (40+), from 4 batches, and 3 of the batches behaved fairly well (yes, it might crack.. but rarely enough that it didn't bother me. and only if it was overworked, or way too thick in hollow form.)

the last batch of 7mm rods from ABR had lumps every inch or so, and i've had a bad success rate.. 6/14 pendants backed with this color cracked.. days later usually. the backing basically popped right off.

I use a LOT of the chinese black, both in tubing and rod form. I have never had any problem so long as I make sure my flame is not the slightest bit reducing.

The chinese black is basically a turbo green so it may be a chromium thing where reduction and long garaging at 1050F could bring about incompatibility issues.
I've only used the tubing a few times and the only trouble I've had is it's tendency to devit on the surface leaving a matte finish in some areas. This has only been an issue when trying to add a few layers of decoration to the surface though.

hmm, i do soak my work for a 12 hr day most days at around 1050....and i did get the bumpy china black...Its odd though, cause lets say i made 20 pieces all the same way out of the same 4 ft china black glass rod, and i kiln them the same...and only 10 pieces break....i don't get how if the variable stays the same, how some pieces go wrong. I just get bothered when i don't know why things happen. I like the idea of the kiln soak is to long n to hot, that gives me some explanation....i guesss....its so tough to trust. im comming to this realization in life. Cheap things are cheap!
