The drywall is up and the first coat of mud. I'm getting excited.
The goal is to have the bench run wall to wall along the far wall (1 window to the east). Then I'm thinking turn it along the south wall past the first window (only window in picture).
If I do I can't decide how deep to make the bench and if both ends should be the same or if the east should be say 30" and the south say 24.
The bench in the picture will probably go along the north wall and hold my photo cube and a shelf below for glass storage. Just inside the door will be my light table on one side and a desk on the other.
The room is 11.6'x21'. The narrow end is what you are looking at.

Hi Nancy,
I would err on the side of caution for your bench width, at least for your torching area itself. I made mine 3 foot 6 inches deep, with an extension table that slides in and adds another 16-18 inches just in case I ever decide to do big boro stuff. Plus all that depth gives me room for the kiln next to the torch while still allowing me to have 18 inches between it and the wall. However, 3 feet would probably have been enough for doing softglass only.
The rest of your benches would probably be fine if they were 20-24 inches wide.

Thanks.
I keep thinking I have no interest in this or that. But we all know, as sure as I don't allow space I'll want it.

Heather,
Thanks. It must have been a really sunny day because I think the picture is brighter than real life. (My DH put a wrap around porch over the windows in my end. :( )
Karin,
You've missed my boro questions on the various forums. (I don't remember what I asked what where, I think I asked about neon here, and boro at the IGA forum.)
I'd like to do some boro beads, if I was smart enough. I can tell already it is way over my head. But a bigger torch (and bigger projects) are way off in the future. This little thing called $ keeps getting in the way of bigger toys.
:(

Yep I do. I noticed you said you had one and I know you make boro beads. 'Cause I cherish mine you made me. ;)
I seriously don't think I'm smart enough to do boro color. I had hoped to do ornaments. So far I don't think that will fly with my bobcat. But lately I'm thinking about staying with beads or going to neon. Until I learned I'll need to modify my torch or get a different one. So, then I'm back to beads. :)

oh its not hard Nancy ;) let your kiln do MOST of the work hehe maybe your just picking the weong colors....Ill have to come out and give you a couple "lessons" hehe If I ever manage to get some free time! as far as ornaments yea a bobcat is a bit of a poop for that stuff you cant get a busshy enough flame....thats why I was hoping to find a used barracuda or cheetah....:)

We'll have to talk sometime. I have a kit of something from one of the companies and the Doug R DVD. Between the two I feel really stupid.
I've done an ornament class with Todd. I don't really have torch envy but it wouldn't take much. I'm with you on the barracuda, maybe someday.

The last of the sanding should be done later today or tomorrow. Then the painting can start. I'm busy on Thursday and have a class to teach Thursday night so no painting then. :( I hope to be moving things back in by Sunday, or building a new workbench on Monday.
(Hoping, might not happen, but I'm used to delays at this point.)

That isn't a propane tank *inside* your studio that I can see is it??!!!! ;)
Just Nancy

Yep. Sure is. :) It goes into the barn when it's not in use, till they hook up my hard wired propane.
Actually the building inspector didn't care if I kept the tank in there or hard wired it. The propane people all said to keep the tank in there. (Not even move it out.) I had the hardest time getting someone to agree to the black pipe installation ~even with approval from the building inspector. It still hasn't been hooked up but has been pressure tested.
And don't get me started on getting help from professionals on ventilation. The current status is they all say the hoods I'm looking at should be fine. The safety gurus around the net say vents need a 8"+ duct. I'll have to do the best I can with what I find on my own.

Karin,
I'll be checking the bathroom for the latest. Sounds like a bummer. Yes, I hope to have the painting done and move my current bench back in place. But I notice the guy is still out there as I type. If he's adding any new mud I may be out of luck. If I'm up and running you could swing by here. I think I'm home all weekend. We usually go away, but couldn't this year. :(

That explains the look of disappointment on my face as I yet again just came in from the studio...with the reality that all I can make with boro is MUD!!! I've been playing with the sample packs from GA & NS....not many of the polychromatic in those bundles....back to the torch tomorrow - thanks for the insight!

I'm headed out today for some color having played with the shorts Karin left here. Here's hoping for the right choices and time to try them.
Here's a shot of our whole space. http://www.baublesbynancy.com/studio5.jpg
Then closer to the door to my studio. http://www.baublesbynancy.com/studio4.jpg
The opposite direction (this is the main room and future bathroom and kitchenette at the end) http://www.baublesbynancy.com/studio6.jpg
For now I'm focused on glass storage. Eventually we'll do the trim work, bathroom, sink and counter, etc. I've got a fridge, that was my first concern.

Congratulations Nancy! Aren't you just loving the mess. I cursed dry wall dust for 2 solid weeks. It's the worst.
Here's a hint, however ... there's a dry wall dust vacuum bag (got it at Lowe's) that you can install in any wet dry vacuum that helped a lot during clean up. That stuff gets everywhere.
Also, my electrician put my kiln on a separate switch in the fuse box, all on it's own so it wouldn't have any chance of blowing a fuse and I wouldn't have to worry about annealing mishaps or having to babysit my kiln.
You'll feel like a new person with renewed creative energy when it's all done. Enjoy!

Cool. Didn't know about the drywall dust for the shopvac. That is good to know.
