Brass Mesh /Sparkler

Is it normal for brass mesh to spit and sparkle like one of those cake sparklers
when the heat hits it?

IMO, You should not hit it with an open flame. Apply it, keep it out of the flame and encase.

It gives of toxic fumes when allowed to vaporize.

Chrissy will be coming out with a tutorial soon on how to properly work with brass mesh, and I believe she will give lots of detail as to safety concerns addressing not only sparking but fumes as well.
