Just a side note.... You can get started on this tutorial if you have any reduction glass at all. I show a variety of different glass in the tutorial but my "go to" glass for the Storm Technique is Olympia Rain. Jed has assured me he has plenty available and will even be making more periodically. You can find Olympia Rain here. (http://www.doublehelixglassworks.com/glassrods-1.aspx)

The Storm Technique has been tested on a HotHead and it does work! You will need to experiment on your own as some glass may work best over others.

It's fantastic isn't it? I was playing with it for HotHead users and here's the results I have so far. :) I must say, I used a bad rod of Olympia Rain (remember that second batch that just went yellow?) and I could still get some decent reactions.

There is a bit of a difference between the original OR and the new version although the difference may only be visible to me. The new rods are seeded with micro bubbles which is an added bonus to the whole storm effect in my opinion. :) The original version kinda storms a little more prominently so I like the original too.

Amy can you give a list of some of the different reduction glasses this technique will work with other than Olympia Rain, for those who have are not silver glass savvy? Thanks!

It works with almost any reduction glass. In the tutorial I use Taxco, Juno, Golden Emerald, Psyche, Triton, Aurae, Zeus..... I think that covers most of them. Nyx doesn't storm too well and Aion....forget it. Other than that, I can get something out of almost any reduction glass. I've even stormed Ekho.

Amy - thank you for writting this wonderful tutorial. I can't wait for this weekend so I can play.

I do have one question...do you always use silver glass for the base bead?

For the base bead, yes. I just like the way it reacts with Dark Ivory like I show in Figure 2 on page 5. Plus I always hated the way most glass would cause dots to sink into the base bead instead of allowing it to spread. So it's like a double bonus. You guys can use whatever you like though. You don't have to be all crazy with the silver glass like me.

I just bought the tut and can't wait to start reading it over. I also bought some of the Olympia Rain from DH. But I have other DH colors I can use till I get the DH.

I'm a bit of a novice (only 1 yr. torching) so it will be interesting to see how well I'm able to comprehend it.

Thanks Amy!!!!

Amy, what other colors work well other than Olympia Rain? Looks wonderful!

Just about any reduction glass can be stormed. In the tutorial I had to select just a few or I would have gone on for another 15 pages. I used Aurae, Triton, Psyche, Zeus, Golden Emerald and Taxco as well as Olympia Rain. There is a resource section on the last page of the tutorial with all the glass used and where to purchase it.

Getting the pictures right is half the battle, and you did a great job with the all the photos. I can't tell you how happy I am that you decided to do this tutorial. It is worth every penny and more. Hi,

First,I love this tutorial! The effect is absolutely stunning, but I'm having a bit of a problem:doubt:

The only silver glass I have at the moment is aurae and I just can't get it to work!

I can get the storm whisps ok (brilliantly simple technique by the way) but the colour is just mud.

I have this problem with silver glasses anyway but thought I'd got aurae sussed after buying the "making silver glass sing" tutorial.
I think I'm over reducing but I can't see how you can get it to melt enough for the technique to work without over reducing it and turning it to poop!(if over reducing is the problem).

Any hints or tips to get me on track would be really appreciated,

Rob.
p.s. I'm on a Bobcat with a 5lpm oxycon.

p.p.s I've also tried with Dalai Lama and yup - poop](*,)

AKDesigns
2009-09-23, 4:27pm
If your Aurae looks icky just try doing a light storm with it. Aurae should give you caramel like shown in figure 11, bead 6 in the tutorial. I think it may be a good idea to get some Olympia Rain or Zeus and some Golden Emerald. You can't go wrong with those colors and using them first will help you get the hang of it. I'm actually shocked at how quickly most people are storming so well so don't get discouraged. Don't throw out those muddy stormed Aurae stringers either, use them for your base dot and top them with something else that's been lightly stormed. :)

AKDesigns
2009-09-23, 4:28pm
Oh and Dali Lama is a striking color so it's not good for storming. The reason Ekho works is because it's both a striking and reducing glass.

Bobbo

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Emerald green and Zeus are now ordered!

OMG Amy!
This was so much fun to make, and surprisingly fast. This is my first and only attempt. I wasn't going to do this because I wasn't sure I had all the right glass. But thanks to a trade I made for Triton a couple weeks ago, I found that I could indeed attempt it. It's still on the mandrel because I still have to anneal it. I don't normally batch anneal big beads, but now I'll have to. Hope it doesn't crack before that. I'm pretty proud of this bead. Now I wish I would have made it on a 3/16" mandrel so I could use it in my Pandora bracelet. Oh well, my next attempt will be the big hole bead. Pardon the background mess.
Thank you so so much!

Amy, your "trial by fire" for the tutorial will be if I can make them! I got the tut last week and I've been on jury duty all this week so I haven't been able to try it out. But I guarantee, if I can make them, you will know that anyone can make them. If I can't make them, it's just proof that I'm a miserably poor wannabe lampworker! LOL. Wish me luck, y'all! The trial finished up today, so maybe I can play with it this weekend.

It's fantastic isn't it? I was playing with it for HotHead users and here's the results I have so far. :) I must say, I used a bad rod of Olympia Rain (remember that second batch that just went yellow?) and I could still get some decent reactions.

I only have a HotHead & really want to make the reduction colors! Do you cover your ports with foil only or a cut-down soda can, or how? I assume you then hold the "port-blocker" with a gloved hand, but do you have to work way out in the flame or closer in. Sorry, I really haven't got the reduction thing to work yet...

I just have aluminum foil wrapped around the base of my HotHead. I made a little handle with the foil and I just slide it up when I want to reduce and slide it back down when I'm done. I have to redo it once a month but aluminum foil is cheap. I reduce way out from the flame tip - like maybe 8 inches away from the flame...

Alright, I'm a bit confused. I downloaded the tut, which is very well written and clear (thanks Amy!). My impression from the tut is that the technique will only work with a reducing silver glass, correct? Then, after reading, I come back here and check out the gallery and see Bullseye stormed beads. Does Bullseye make silver glass? Or are people mixing 104 silver glass with BE? That doesn't seem possible, but what do I know? LOL.

Clarification, please! Thank you.

This is a Sea Pod I made a long time ago and the dots don't line up perfect so I kept it for myself. You can see that the stormed dots are much smaller than I do now but you can still see the storming going on.

I got my glass order from DH in today!! I got some Olympia Rain and 4 other 1/4 pounders. I can PLAY with this now! YAY! Maybe I can get out there today and create some storms if it doesn't start storming (weatherwise!) outside again. I won't fire up my kiln if there's lightning happening! I DO have a question...When you apply the storm twistie, do you just put a blob of it on there, or do you kind of swirl it around on top of the previous dot? Either I'm not reading it right or I'm not comprehending it, so figured I'd ask before I mess up something.

So many people are getting such great results with this wonderful tutorial. I just tried it once before I moved and forgot about it when I got set up again. Now I want to try it again.:-)

Thanks Kevan. I remember seeing a really pretty bead of yours in the S & T. :)

Laurie, I am working on a new tutorial. It's going to be called "Webbing Techniques - A Comprehensive Guide". Since doing the storm tutorial I've been developing other webbing techniques and having a ton of fun. Now I'm getting all scientific about it and I'm testing every Double Helix glass color and putting each one through every one of my webbing techniques. Soon everyone will know my secrets on how to get beads like these.

I'm hoping to have it done in January but it may be sooner, depending on how much testing time I get at the torch each week. :)

Thanks everyone! I'm glad there is some interest in it. I have a ton of testing to do but the good news is that I just won't be giving you a tutorial on how to do each webbing technique. It will be a guide showing you each glass color and which techniques work with it and many sample beads to show you what you can expect to get.

I'm just going to drool over that last bead until the new tut comes out. It's that gorgeous!

Very excited about this. Your tutorial has been my favorite of ones I've purchased. I love the webbing technique when I can get it, but I still have a little trouble with it smetimes. Can't wait to see this tut

I have about four or five webbing techniques now and the standard one in the storm tutorial is the one I use the least. It will be included though and I'll give tips on each glass color to get the best outcome so hopefully it will help you but I think you'll like the other webbing techniques better. :)

I completely agree, Betsy. The storm tutorial has paid for it self 100 times over. Can't wait to see the new recipes Amy. Webbing is my favorite. :)

Are you going to do a pre-order?

Are you going to do a pre-order?

No, I won't do that for a couple of reasons. First, I never feel comfortable taking anyone's money without having a product for them that's ready. Second, I like to keep my pricing the same so no discounts in the beginning and no sales for Groundhogs day or May day.

Great! I am looking forward. I hope I will learn just as much as I learned from the first one. I will order your new tutorial!!!

I've had some stuff going on here so I haven't really been able to torch in the last few weeks. I hope to get back on track this week and get back to testing glass. I still have a month or more of testing and then I can start compiling it all. In other words...it will be awhile!

amy (or anyone else that knows) - without giving away the info in the tutorial itself, can you tell me which technique I would use to storm TAG Wicked? The first technique discussed or the alternate one for certain glasses?
thanks,
laura

Laura,
I've never used that glass before. But I can tell you how I approach working with a new glass color. I usually start out by doing the traditional storm technique and see how the glass behaves. If not much is happening or the storming won't "stick" then I'll switch over to heavy storming. Some glass won't do either well.

For those that have the new odd lots of DH glass that are lime green, they like heavy storming. It's what I used in these dots.

Beautiful Kevan!

I want the new tut. My son just got into Mothra and Godzilla stuff and that webbing technique would make great Mothras!

I finally got back to testing glass colors today so it's coming along again. And you know you're my HH tutorial tester Amber so you'll be one of the first to get it....whether you like it or not.
