Tagging your glass rods...

Do you put a tag on each rod to identify its color, or just one tag on the whole "batch" of the same color? :-k

Just one tag, and I hardly ever use that last rod. That way I know exactly what I need to order.

Often a tag is stuck to the plastic packaging that identifies the color - I just keep the packaging with the rods or keep the rods in the package. Otherwise I tag at least one rod with my own label.

Tag one rod, then use a sharpie to put a black circle on the ends of certain colors I have trouble telling apart at the bench--
dark ivory to distinguish from light ivory
dark turquoise to distinguish from dark sky blue

I don't tag my glass, and remove the supplier's tags as I go. I have a label with color # & name printed on the inside of each PVC tube, and also an Excel spreadsheet I update every 4-6 weeks for a running total of what I currently have in stock. (Yeah, I know, I'm a geek...) LOL

Naah, that's not a geek, that's organized. In fact that sounds like a really good idea! A geek would be if you also have to have the rods tagged... so anyone know where to get those little labels that are made for rods? :geek:

I tag one of each batch, and for the moment that's key as I don't have enough storage for my glass, and everything is in one area.

I tag every rod. every single blessed one. and with the date I got the glass. now this spread sheet thing... that sounds wonderful!! where does the not very geekish at all get such a beast? is it an easy to use beast? what care and feeding does it need? I have a list of the colors I have and how many rods or stringers of each, that I print out and update in pencil as I go along on the paper and type it up new every couple of weeks. sounds like a spread sheet would be easier than typeing from scratch each time.

Depends on how you want to run your spreadsheet. I have mine separated into individual worksheet by glass manufacturer, full listing by item #, color description, qty on hand, then a column of base stock amount, a column for restock amount to get back to base stock amount, and various supplier columns with base pricing and a column of their discount pricing. I never place a glass order for less than 20 lbs at a time. I have everything in either Excel or Access anyway, as they're both interchangeable.
