When I went to fire up my kiln yesterday and my Orton came on but didn't heat up. It clicked a few times like it was going to heat up then nothing. I tried the standard unplug it for a bit and that didn't help. Beating on it with a mandrel didn't seem to have any effect either. I just left it turned on about an hour later it started heating up and acting normal. It went through a cycle and I turned it off this morning. I hestitantly turned it back on this afternoon and it's working fine.
So, the point is, should I go on my merry way because this a normal thing that happens occasionally or should I start to panic and order in parts to be overnighted? If it is something going bad what part would it be?

Well its not a good thing for this to happen.
Could be the relay,or the power transformer, or the controller it self.

So it sounds like I have to wait for it to fail before I know what part is bad. I don't want the expense of replacing the entire controller if I don't have to. Yesterday my friend returned my back-up kiln that I loaned her so if the controller goes I'm prepared!

I would go ahead and replace the relay - it is cheap, easy to do and the most likely easily fixable culprit.
