I am having problems with a new batch of Sepia turning brown out of the kiln. My first batch was fine and stayed true to color. Is anyone else having any problem with Sepia they have recently purchased? It isn't my torch, gas or hose. Everything else I have torched at the same time stays true to color only the Sepia turns brown. Thanks to anyone who has any ideas why. Sorry for the confusion I rechecked the name and it was not Larkspur.

I haven't used Larkspur, but I have been really disappointed with Crocus since the first beautiful batch.

I have a rod of larkspur from testing - I'll try it today and see if it happens and let you know!

Hi Karen ~ Are you able to post pictures of your results? I'm originally from Ohio (Lorain Co). Where are you at?

I did bring up a pic but unsure how. Here is the Sepia pics. The heart color is is true to color. I didn't mention in my previois post, I make hearts with cremains. The customer wanted a bracelet to go with her heart and so my problem began when I ordered more Sepia to make the lentils for the bracelet.

Hi, Karen~
Just sent a note to Kathy at CIM, to see if she has any info on this problem. She's really great about responding to issues about her glass! In the meantime, I'm going to go see if I have some of the newer batch of Sepia, and will test it if I have some.

Hopefully some useful info will show up soon to help you!

I don't imagine this will help but all my Sepia has been a light smokey brown.

I'm confused now, is it Larkspur or Sepia we are talking about. My Sepia is a faintly pinkish brown.

My second batch of Crocus was washed out and much more translucent that the original.

Now I'm really confused. What colour was the heart? It doesn't look anything like my Sepia!

I'd bet money that the first rod is heffalump, and not crocus. I have both, and it looks like both rods lined up together.

No Traci - I don't think so. Heffalump isn't semiopaque. At least not the lot I've received.

Is one of the Crocus rods a Unique? I know there are several Crocus Uniques and they are all different.

It is definitely 2 batches of Crocus and not one of the Uniques; I have the wrapper and rod labels and the invoice. I sent Kathy these photos a while back and she was going to look into it.

It is definitely not Hefalump. I have some of that too and my Hefalump is pastel/opaque.

If I have time I will take another picture tonight with the Heffalump for contrast.

My Sepia looks more like the lentil, that is why I suggested it for Smokey Topaz in another thread.

Hmm......not sure what I should test to help you out. My Sepia is a light brown, the heart looks pink?? Are you sure you used the same glass for both of them? I've never seen such a pink sepia, unless it was mis-labeled?

Could the heart be Larkspur? See title of this thread. They might look similar in rod form (I don't have any Larkspur to compare).

My sepia looks exactly like your heart, a pinkish-tea color. My heffalump is opaque, similar to moretti pastel lavender ( 221) My crocus is semi opaque, like cirrus but then purple. My lakespur is a very faint lavender transparant not pink at all

I have no idea what happened with the lentil, it almost looks like smoked topaz

Hi Karen, I find that the longer and hotter you work Sepia it is more more brown. Sepia is a brown :) Could it be that you worked the first time cooler than the 2nd time?

I heard from Kathy at CIM and she said that the first part of Sepia on the pull of the rod can be on the pink side. This is crazy but I'm sorry for the confusion. The heart is Sepia, but the first batch I had was on the pink side. Then I ran out and the new rods matched the heart in color until I torched it and out of the kiln it was more brown. I never realized how different it could be until Kathy sent me her an e-mail. In response to Kerry the glass is worked a long time when I make a heart so working cooler dosen't help, I also tried working higher in the flame with more oxy and it still didn't keep it from turning brown. Thanks for all your input. Karen

Hrm...it's too bad that you don't have any bits left of the batch that matches the heart that you could at least make some stringers with it so that it would coordinate with the heart.....
Good luck!

Maybe you could post in the garage and see if anyone has an earlier batch of sepia availalbe? There's a lot of CIM users out there.......just a thought!
