Hello! I was sitting in a glass meeting and someone started to turn off their torch and was interuppted and told they were doing it incorrectly. Incorrectly because they weren't following the Propane, Oxygen - on and then Oxygen, Propane - off method.
My understanding is that this is no longer necessary. Can someone please chime in.
Well, you have to light the propane first. Oxygen won't burn. As for turning them off, I usually just turn them both off at the same time.

I prefer POPO my self, but I've always been a bit weird.
It really doesn't matter which way you do it, as long as you do it the same way each time so it becomes a habit.
PO, as Chad put it does have to happen that way. I think the reason it became OP, is so that you remember to turn off the oxygen...by turning it off first, you get a huge yellow smoky ball of burning propane (which is the reason I do POPO).
What ever floats your boat!

I POPO, too.
Now, on a premix, I think there is an order you need to follow. I'm not sure.

Hi Stef! :waving:
I've always done POOP, but that's because it's how I learned. Now several times, my brain's farted and I've POPO'd or turned them off at the same time. There were no ill effects whatsoever.
Like Chad said...you need to have the PO, but the OP is at your discretion. :)

Yeah, if you have a premix torch, it's best to turn the oxygen off first, otherwise you get a premix "POP" which can scare the bejebbers out of you the first time you hear it.
I POOP  because I want to burn the propane out of the hose before I disconnect the hose from the propane tank outside and put everything away. I don't want gas left in the line.

Thanks everyone for your replies!
I recall someone mentioning that at one time torches were made in such a way it was a safety issue... and I can't remember the details.](*,)
Myself, I use POPO. I turn the propane off while the torch is still lit... so hopefully the oxygen will push out the remaining propane in my hose. When the flame dies out, then I turn off the oxygen.
I was actually thinking of writing you Kbinkster... since I have Lynx - I thought at least I should know for sure on the torch that I use.
Take Care!

Heheheheheehheeeeeeeee this thread just cracked me up. I mean, I know it has serious content, but I am tired and loopy from working today, and it just tickled my funnybone. Heeeeee!!!!
Oh, and BTW POOP for me most of the time. Sometimes PO, then both at the same time. But purely out of habit.
I use a minor and I can get quite a loud pop if I don't poop. I don't think it hurts anything, but it is startling.

I guess I NGOONG! Which kinda sounds like the noise one would make when one needs to POOP. :o

I teach my students the "poop" theory so they won't end up with it in their pants! literally. After they leave my class I have no idea what torch they will end up buying...so learning this right from the start will save them near fatal heart attacks the first time they hear that "firecracker/gunfire" sound from a pre-mix!!! which can result in?? well, refer to my first sentence, lol.

You can POOP or POPO and either will be fine. But just so you'll know, the oxygen will not push any propane out of the hose or the torch. On a surface mix torch, those gases are kept seperate until they mix at the face of the torch.
If you are concerned about propane in your line, then you should shut off your torch, shut off the tank valves and back out the Ts, and then go back to your torch and bleed the line. When I ran on tanked oxygen, I usually left the oxygen line alone and just bled the propane.
There are discussions regarding the better way to bleed a propane line. The two main schools of thought are:
light the propane when bleeding the line; and,
do not light the propane when bleeding the line
I light the propane when bleeding my line just because that's how I do it. There are reasons for doing it either way, and that can be a whole 'nother discussion.
