Hi,

Word on the street is that the new tutorial for Michael Barley's Baleen Bead will be coming out soon. I've been intending to put this together for a couple of years. I guess I'm kind of slow. There's a saying that when life hands you lemons, you should make lemonade. Well, that's what life did. Thanksgiving weekend I broke my arm. Since I couldn't make beads for a month, I took the time to finish the tutorial. I had already taken the pictures a long time ago. I just needed the time to sit down long enough to put the steps into words. I'm planning to offer it for sale on my Etsy store right after I get home from teaching in Austin around January 21 or so.

But, if you want a chance to get an advance copy of this tutorial, you can enter a drawing to win a copy. Here's all that you have to do. Make a donation to the Center Valley Animal Rescue. It's a no kill animal shelter that is run by an amazing woman named Sara and a host of volunteers. We met Sara many years ago when she started working as an assistant to our vet. In the beginning, it was Sara and her boyfriend who started taking in unwanted animals. After working all day at the vet's, she went home to her other full time job taking care of the animals. Over the years, volunteers started showing up to help. She still works at the vet office but with help from volunteers and donations, the CVAR has expanded into a non-profit, 501C3 organization, so all donations are tax deductible. Here's a link to the website: http://www.centervalleyanimalrescue.org/index.html

Here's the deal to win an advance copy of the Baleen bead tutorial. Make a donation to the Center Valley Animal Rescue. For each dollar that you donate to Center Valley Animal Rescue, you will get one ticket and a chance to win. Donate $5.00 and you get five tickets. Make your donation directly to CVAR via paypal(there's a paypal link on their website). After you have made your donation, email me letting me know how many tickets I should fill in with your name. Remember, dollars add up. If a hundred people give a dollar each, $100 will buy a lot of cat food. Here's the link: http://www.centervalleyanimalrescue.org/index.html

But wait! There's more! Donate now and in addition to a copy of the tutorial, you will win the actual bead that was made following the directions in the tutorial. See the attached picture below.

But that's not all! Not only will you win the tutorial and the bead, but Andrea Guarino is offering a copy of her tutorial for making her beautiful Moth Wing bead. Now how can you pass up a deal like that?! So click on the link to Center Valley Animal Rescue right now,http://www.centervalleyanimalrescue.org/index.html ,make your donation of any amount and then email me letting me know how many tickets you want. This offer won't last forever. The deadline to be included in drawing is at midnight on January 19. Drawing will be held on January 20. Andrea will draw the winning name and I'll contact the winner directly. Good luck!

Thank you very much.

Michael

I am so happy that you finally wrote this up as a tutorial even if it took a broken arm to do it (but I am sorry about your arm). I took a class from you a couple of years ago and learned this technique from you then but I still want this tutorial!

I love the raffle idea - I'll probably donate and it looks like a good cause.

Hi Everybody,

Thank you all for your generosity! Sara is going to be so surprised. Thank you also for your thoughts concerning my arm. It is healing well after the surgery and lots of little screws to hold everything together. I started making beads again last week. I need to get my arm back in shape in time for my class in Austin next week. But it's like riding a bicycle and felt really good to get back on the torch. Now I have to get started filling out all of of the tickets with people's names. I didn't expect to have to fill out so many!

Glad the rumor is true and so sorry about your arm! Hope all is well with you. Sent some money to the rescue. We've always had dogs, can't imagine life without them although I'm not so sure about all dogs going to heaven. I'd spend eternity caring for a zillion dogs when what I really want to do is learn to play the piano. Which will take an eternity I'm sure!

You have an Etsy shop? How 'bout a link?

Hi all,

You guys are great! So far, Sara has gotten $848.00 in donations. I'm sure that she must be thrilled. I think that it's great that she has no idea why people from all over the world are sending her money. Thank you to all who have donated. I'll be pulling the winning name in about a week.
By the way, a few people have asked me about my Etsy shop. I don't have anything listed yet, but here's the link to the main page. I've got things ready with my profile page and stuff, but I'm waiting until I get back from teaching in Austin at the wonderful Blue Moon glass studio to list things.

Sounds like you need to be drinking more milk, Michael. So sorry about your arm, your timing was good, though... I know many friends who would've been so disappointed if you had to cancel your classes in Austin this week! Hope you're having fun. Blue Moon is so awesome, I know they're taking good care of you.

I so enjoyed your class when you taught here @ Malcom's, you're such a fantastic teacher... patient & so talented. Your tutorial will be well received, as it should be.

& what a great cause, Michael. So cool that you're helping out Sara like this. I'm definitely going to donate.

I am lucky enough to have taken your class at Portia's Michael. I LOVE making those beads with my own little spin on them. Yours are a whole lot prettier but I'm working on it. LOL I love the idea of donating to an animal rescue.

I just contributed. I've never had the opportunity to take a class with Michael so of course I'm hoping to win! However, beadmakers are such generous people, I love it when they come together to do something like this. We all benefit! Thanks for giving us an opportunity to change a small part of the world!

Just came back from Austin with Michael. AWESOME class. He is just such a super person altogether, I'm so glad I had the opportunity to go and learn from him. I've been lampworking for 9 years, and his class is one I've had on the radar for a long, long time. He taught us the Baleen bead, but I'll probably buy the tutorial anyway, 'cause his notes are bound to be more cohesive than my scribbles during class! And (a plug)as for Blue Moon, what a super place to take a class!

Hi,

I just got home from teaching in Austin. "Hi" Charmaine. It was great meeting you and having you in the class. I'm glad that you made it home safely. Both classes were really fun and everybody was so nice. I love teaching at Blue Moon and Jim and Rose are the best. Marcie was my T.A. and it was really nice having her help me out. Has anyone out there ever seen her not smiling?

A really big "Thank You!" to everybody who has donated. Before I left for Austin, last thursday, the total was around $900. Since then, a bunch more people have donated. I don't know the exact numbers yet, but I bet that it's close to $1200. Wow! You still have time if you haven't joined in yet. Officially the cut off time is midnight tonight. But I won't be making out the final tickets until tomorrow, so if you get it in before I finish cutting out the tickets, I'll include you in the drawing. It'll probably be tomorrow evening when I post the winner and let you know the total amount that was raised.

Thank you very much.

Any chance you'll ever teach in Toronto???
Thanks again.

Good morning all,
I just posted more tutorials on my Etsy store. I'll try to be better about keeping them stocked. I look forward to seeing pictures of what you come up with.

Thank you again for all of your donations. Sara must be thrilled. I think that it's funny because Sara has no idea why people from all over the world are suddenly sending her all this money. I think that is the best part of this thing.

Carol, there may be a chance I'll get there. Amy Johnson has invited me but I don't teach all that often so I can't say when that might be. It's on my list of places to go.

Enjoy,

Michael
