View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Question from newbie about Reichenbach Cane

Hi, I normally just lurk but I just ordered some glass and was so excited, but when I finally had time to open it today it was in( I guess) the huge chunks to melt in a glory hole? Not exactly what I was expecting so I need to return it. But the reason I'm asking about R Cane is this: Does anyone actually carry the line of Reichenbach Cane in Opaque and Transparent? The colors are absolutely gorgeous. I was really looking forward to trying out the Celadon Green and Cranberry Pink, etc....
I feel kind of silly for not knowing that ordering from that website was for people with the huge furnaces to melt the glass, I just assumed as a newbie that if it said lampworking, it would come in the thin rods.
I hope I posted this in the right forum, this is- I think- only the second time I've actually posted, so I hope I did it right 8-[ Thanks for any help, I'm desperate to try some of those colors. - Aja

Olympic Color Rod has the 5-6mm cane you are looking for: http://www.glasscolor.com/products/default.aspx?cID=111&pID=1121
Just be sure to order "cane" and not "rods".

I feel like a ditz now- not 15 minutes after I posted I found that same place on Olympic Rods:roll:
Guess sometimes you just have to learn the hard way. It's just unfortunate they don't have all the colors in the cane that they do in the huge chunks. Thanks for the help, Aja

I was just up there this week. No, they don't have all the colors in cane that they have for casting. They also don't have all the colors in frit that they have for cane.

Hey, they give you free beverages while you look around.

hehe...I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago; ordered the mountain blue in "rod" and got a huge rod about 1 1/2" thick!! You could kill somebody with this thing!

I'll break it into chunks and pull stringers, so no big loss. It's a very pretty color so it's worth it! In the rod it is a dreamy soft blue, with a dark blue skin on the outside. Don't know what it looks like in a bead yet. But so far it looks prettier than the bead in the picture.

I also ordered the lilac rose and purple rose rods; they are actually lampworking rods, thank goodness! A word to the wise if you order them; it turns out the Z99 c purple rose special is lighter than the 851 C lilac rose. I thought it would be the other way around and ordered more of the purple rose. Turned out the lilac rose is darker purple. Go figure! Anyway, it's gorgeous stuff!! Oh, and be careful; some of the rods are sold by the kilo instead of the pound. A kilo is about 2.2 lbs. I saw someone selling this glass for twice this price, so I thought it was a good deal!

So if you wanted to keep your chunks, you could pull stringers from them...that is, if they aren't available in lampworking rods in those colors. I preheat them in the kiln, then hold them with tweezers in the flame, melt part of it and pull.

LOL!

Yeah, those rods could be used as a blunt weapon. They are sooo pretty all sitting on the shelves. They only sell frit by the kilo.

I bought 1/2 a kilo which is just over a lb. for 14.00. Their cane is on sale for a few more weeks - 20% off.

Hey Aja, you didn't go to LSU did you? I've only ever met one person named Aja before. Parents big Steeley Dan fans?

Aja,

I also have used the ROD I use a hammer and chisel and chisel chunks off then pull those chunks into stringer, must prewarm in kiln first before pulling into stringer. It's a lot of fun to work with!!!

Unfortunately the sale only applies to the rod and frit http://www.glasscolor.com/specials/default.aspx :(

The pricing on the RODS is by the kilo---is a ROD a full kilo? Just trying to figure out the cost for some not available in cane.

I was just at C&R Loo (http://www.crloo.com/Products/products.html) in Richmond, CA, and they carry Reichenbach cane (Q-color) in a lot of colors. Unfortunately, I don't see the cane listed on their website yet. I'm not sure if they carry all colors (but there were dozens when I was there), but maybe you could call them if you know the colors you're interested in. Just be sure to tell them its the lampworking cane you want.

I was at OCR 2 weeks ago. It seemed to me that they have a LOT more cane in the store than they show on their website (under the lampwork button). So, you may want to ask if they have it in cane if you are interested in colors. I think most of the cane was Reichenbach.

I pull cane from the large rods.
With my Barracuda I can actually heat the end of a rod a pull 6-8mm cane directly from it until it gets to short to handle. I then break it into 2 inch chuncks and use two Boro punties to melt and pull the rest. It works great and there is a cost saving as the rods are somewhat cheaper than cane or frit. Also you can get all the colors!

Rebekah, nope I never attended LSU- but I think I may be named after the band (although my mom still to this day says she found my name in a baby book:-k )
I'll have to figure out which colors I have that they don't offer in cane and decide whether I want to try and bust it up and make my own cane. I only have a minor torch, so it may be slow going.
Unfortunately I'm stuck here in (H)El Paso for a few more months and there's nothing here in the way of glass or classes, but I'm hoping to one day make it up to the Portland/Seattle areas and maybe try and take some classes from the ladies up that way.
Yeah, and I'm not looking forward to returning that heavy box- hopefully the guy will contact me and let me know where to send it back so it doesn't go to the wrong place lol.
