Here is helpful information about bead donations to Beads of Courage:
Who:
Anyone can donate beads!
What:
Any kind of bead can be used in one way or another. Glass, clay, polymer, seed bead, manufactured, etc.
1. Artisan-made glass beads are used as "Act of Courage" beads which are special beads that kids get to choose for special courageous acts during treatment. They can be any design or size.
2. Glass artisan-made purple hearts are used to signify end of treatment and are always needed.
3. Glass artisan-made butterfly beads are for parents who have lost a child. Please make sure they are visually appealing and durable...no delicate thin edges/wings or other delicate protruding parts like antennae. We want them to last forever and be something that a parent would want to wear and look at. Vertical holes, wire-wrapped are preferred, however all are accepted, wrapped or not.
Where:
ALL beads donated to Beads of Courage should be sent to Headquarters in Tucson:
Beads of Courage
10501 E. Seven Generations Way
Suite 161
Tucson, AZ 85747
(new address as of 4/5/11)
When:
Whenever you get them!
How:
Make sure all glass beads are annealed and holes are clean. No sharp edges or delicate areas that could break easily. Please do not use exposed reduction glass or exposed metallic surfaces.
Package safely and securely and make sure to include your contact information so Beads of Courage can send you a thank you letter.

I have a question about the butterfly beads. Can you accept them with a horizontal hole as long as the whole piece is sturdy? Or, if they must have a vertical hole do they have to be wire wrapped? I have no objection to wire wrapping them, however, I'm not very skilled in it!
RSimmons
2010-01-25, 7:58am
We will accept a horizontal hole but preferably the butterflies will have a vertical hole and will be (or can be) wire wrapped. Many times we find that parents wish to wear these special beads and this type of arrangement makes it a lot easier for them. I wire wrap all of mine before I send them out.
Also, as an addition to Lori's post above, please do not use any reduction glass/metallic surfaces on your donated beads.

Would boro pendants with an imploded butterfly be acceptable for the butterfly beads? That's all kinds of durable.

Sounds cool, I'd like to see a photo if you've got one. So long as the hanger loop is very strong they should be OK. We've had problems in the past with the loops breaking off from pendants.

I updated the sticky to include your other recommendations Robert. Thanks!
This is wonderful. I have never made a butterflies before but I will give it a try. I do enjoy making critters and have alot already made. Do I need to wire wrap my critters also?
RSimmons
2010-01-25, 6:29pm
The critters don't really need to be wire wrapped as they will usually go directly onto a child's bead strand. A purple heart with a vertical hole or a butterfly need to be wire wrapped because these beads are often worn alone on a separate strand. I spoke to one mom recently who has worn her daughter's butterfly on a neck chain every day for a couple of years. Wire wrapping makes this a lot easier from the start.
Thanks for your thoughtfulness and your donations.

There was a question in another thread about the wire-wrapping. Hearts do NOT need to be wire wrapped. If the hole is vertical we CAN wire wrap them and they can then be used as pendants for parents.
Horizontal-holed purple hearts can be used for kids' strands.
Butterfly beads also do NOT need to be wire-wrapped (we can do that when it gets to headquarters) however, the hole should be vertical so that it's possible. If you only know how to make them with a horizontal hole, please send those also. We can always use every glass bead!

I have a question: how do the beads that are sent in get distributed? Thanks.
LoriGreenberg
2010-03-17, 9:35pm
Hi Kathy.
Karen in the office receives the boxes and goes through every single bead. Makes sure they're clean and nothing sharp or delicate that can be harmful. She then packages each bead into a little plastic ziploc with a Beads of Courage hang tag specially for Acts of Courage beads.
When a new hospital program is started, part of their introductory boxes of beads include an amount of Acts of Courage beads. Hospitals know that they are supposed to call when they are running low on beads and when they do, they are sent more. (I don't know the amounts of either the start up beads or additional beads that are sent).
There is no discrimination of where beads go or who gets what. We have had requests that some beads, after being sent to headquarters, be distributed to the artist groups home hospital site. Jean says that they always try to do their best with that.
Act of Courage beads are distributed to kids at the discretion of the nursing staff. They are for a particularly tough time where courage is shown and when they feel a kid needs an extra boost. (In between Act of Courage beads they get lots of others for all of their procedures and milestones). When trained by Beads of Courage, nursing staff are told, "if you have a question as to whether to give an Act of Courage bead for something, GIVE IT."
Children get to choose their own Act of Courage bead out of the stash on hand at the hospital.
I think that maps the path of a bead. If there are more specific questions, please ask!

Thanks Lori! That is great info. We are going to propose to our chapter that we designate BOC as a regular project and start making beads specifically to suit current needs. I want to be able to fully inform them on the process.

Lori, are the beads sanitized before they're sent out - thinking allergens that could be present, colds, etc...?

You know, I'm not really sure. I'll check on that. I know they're really careful and that's why it is so important that bead holes are clean. We have our board meeting today! I'll try to remember to ask that.

I know the preference is 3/32 holes, but I use 1/16 regularly and have a lot of those I could send. Is it really hard for the kids to string 1/16 beads?

Lori, are the beads sanitized before they're sent out - thinking allergens that could be present, colds, etc...?
There's not a regular sterilization process, but all of the beads are checked to be sure that they are clean, inside and out. They are then packaged individually in small plastic bags to keep them clean during the shipping and storage process. I believe that any beads going into special situations are cleaned again just to be sure that they're ok. The beads I make or collect and ship are fully processed (no bead release, ends checked and fixed of needed, beads washed) before they go out the door, so they are ready to go when they reach Tucson.

Does this mean no silver foil used in the beads? Most of what I have, and sent in the past has at least some silver foil in the surface of the bead.

Hi Tammie.
They will be used for something! As a rule though, no metallic surfaces that can come into contact with the skin for the kids.

Bump for this question. :) If we are able to, should we wire wrap any beads on 1/16 to make it easier for the kiddos?
RSimmons

No, you don't need to wire wrap the 1/16 beads. the strand material that we use will fit nicely in that size hole. The 3/32 is a little easier to string, but it's OK to send the 1/16 without any wire wrapping.
Sorry it took a while to get back to you on this.

Can I ask if they is an European organisation too for Beads of Courage?
I'd like to participate but I don't know if we have this in Europe.

There is not yet a Beads of Courage program in Europe. We're in the US, Japan and New Zealand at the moment but are constantly growing.

I would like to offer up some sort of support too. But what i would need is beads to be sent to me to prove their existence and I can then send a box to you.
What I'd like to offer is anyone willing to make beads...
If they send me 10 beads, I will gift them a $15 Gift Certificate for my store.
Would these be something we could do to encourage some handmade beads for these kids?

Hopefully my box made it there OK. There were a bunch of butterflies and hearts and bunches of Courage beads.
:)
Several years back, a group of lampwork artists, (including yourself Lori), sent me their orphans so that I could design my display cases. The beads were also used as props for photography work of my display cases. The project has yet to get off the ground. I no longer need this horde of beads. Not all of the artists wanted them back. Therefore, I feel that Beads of Courage might gladly make use of these.
I have gone through as many as I can to make sure that they are properly cleaned with my diamond reamer. However, I don't know if all have been properly kiln annealed. With my kiln acting up latlely, I don't want to take a chance of them not being annealed correctly. Perhaps whomever these get sent to, will see to it that they get a chance to be annealed. Any feedback on this idea??

Can you tell me if these frogs would be acceptable? I make sure the feet, legs and body are seated well on the bead. It would take focused effort to break an arm or the head away. I figured I ought to ask before I make more!

Richard, I am trying to think of a way I can help, but I have not learned lamp working yet. I'm still just fusing. So I was thinking I can do little cabachons with some of these things the kids are looking for - characters, princess theme, etc. - included or encased in the glass, or I can encase butterflies for a butterfly bead. I can do oval or round or heart-shaped cabachons and wire wrap them, so they would by like a pendant. Or I can just put a finding on the back (it's a little hard to wire wrap a heart so it stays put). OK they won't be as cute as those frogs on the hearts, but they have a little personality. I just learned about the program this morning, and I want to contribute something... *sigh* if you say no, then I'll just have to donate cash, which is boring.

They're wonderful Kristina! All beads are welcome and can be used in one way or another. I know what the purple hearts can be used for!
As for age limits of the kids...there really aren't any. If they can be seen in a pediatric setting, they can be part of the program. We are piloting a NICU unit and have kids who have been receiving treatment for many years, such as heart transplant recipients...they go all the way up until they transition into adult care...probably for the rest of their lives.
Please let me know if you have any specific questions if that didn't help!

I know we can't use reduction glasses...but does the Raku count? I made a turtle with raku on his shell, and then I was like #-o.
If you can still use it, great...if not, I just get to make more turtles! :)
RSimmons

I haven't done the testing on the various versions of Raku. For the moment I'm recommending against it until I can get time on the system to look at it. If it's encased it's OK, just not on the surface.

Just be sure that you've got the bead release out of the hole and that the hole has smooth edges. Beyond that, s simple rinse should do the job.

Greetings, I have a whole pile of orphan beads I am sending off. I think this is a great cause. I was recently in a hospital in Duluth MN and a couple of the nurses were wearing their name tags on strands of lampwork pendants. When I complimented one of them she said, they were dontated for beads of courage but because they had so many, the nures get to have them too. Now I dont doubt the nurses work hard but this felt a little...odd to me. My hope is beads get sent to hospitals who currently dont receive so they can get to more kids.

Maybe I missed it -- but what do you mean by wire wrapped? Do you just mean putting it on a head pin with a large loop or something more intricate. Could you post a picture of what you mean?

Here's an example of how I set up wire wrapped butterfly beads. Fairly simple, but I like to use 20 ga. wire as it's a bit stronger than most headpins. Make a tinly loop at the bottom and use a 3mm bead as a stopper if the bead was made on a 3/32 mandrel.

Recently I have gone through my bead storage and set aside whole bunch of odds and ends. I did not know what to do with them, but if I could donate them to your organization, I would be more than happy to do so. My beads are flameworked and annealed. They are all cleaned, too. My question is do they have to be butterflies? Mine are not. Please answer this question before I can ship them out. Thanks for your good work. Sachiko L.

Hi Sachiko,
No, your beads don't have to be butterflies, my picture was just an example. We need lots and lots of just what you are describing - beads that will capture the imagination of a child and help them get through tough times. Your beads would be very welcome, indeed.

I have sent off an e-mail to our local childrens hospital to see if they have anything like this available. I think it's a great idea.
How many lampworkers would it take to support a program like this? I am in the Maritimes and the IWK Health Centre is the main children's hospital for several provinces. But, we don't have any official bead making chapter here. How difficult would it be to round up the support?

I have a few questions and can't seem to find the answers to them. If they have been answered before I apologize. I don't want to send beads out that are going to be unsuitable for donation.
I understand about beads that are made with metals or have a metallic surface are not given to the children because of potential skin reactions. I'm curious about beads made using metals such as foil, brass, wire, silver glasses or silvered stringers. If the bead is encased are they ok to send?
I have a boat load of off mandrel hearts that I have been practicing on using silvered ivory stringer as a surface decoration. These hearts are not encased. There is no exposed metal on them just the melted in SIS. Are they ok to send?
My last question is about the letter/tax receipt you send out after receiving a donation. It doesn't show a dollar amount for the beads that were donated. How do I know how much I should designate at tax time as a donated amount? Is there a standard amount for each donated bead?
I'm more of a hobby bead maker and don't sell my beads so I'm not sure what is appropriate to claim as a donation amount. I'll appreciate your help. CarrieB
I found answers to my bead questions on the BOC web site.

Hi,
I want to be really clear on what's ok for the kiddos, so how do I know what frit is reduction frit and needs to be encased?
A soft glass that goes silver, like I think dk. turq, does that need to be encased?
Seashell pink?
If I already did some that are not encased can they be used in some way?

Any glass that when reduced (or some even oxidated/ized?) that bring silver to the surface are considered a metallic surface. I can't vouch for each color. If it visibly has metallic effects on the surface, those are the ones we're talking about.
A good alternative to turquoise that goes metallic is dk. sky blue.It doesn't go metallic so much.
All beads can be used Rowyn! Just package them separately and note that they have metallic surfaces and to use for something other than beads for the kids strands. You can say I told you so on the note ;) and Karen, the bead donation volunteer can ask me what it means if she needs to.

I've just recently started this wonderful hobby. I don't have a kiln and no plans (or funds!) in the near future to get one. Right now, my beads go into a fiber blanket after torching them. I understand that this is not truly annealing them? I would love to donate but don't want to send beads that can't be used. Is there anything I can do?
Where are you? Maybe someone nearby would do the annealing for you. I would do it if you're near me (or want to mail them to me) north of Tampa, FL.

I'm in SE Wisconsin. I don't know of anybody else where I live that does anything like this. I don't have a great many right now. I just started doing this two weeks ago. All of the beads I have right now are as the result of experimenting with different techniques. In other words...there are no two that are alike. :)
Well keep me in mind. I'm a little less new, but probably only have done around 100 beads so far (maybe less) and I'm making many of them for BOC. I sent off my first beads already, and am gathering for another box, and will be doing more after that. So if you get enough needing annealing & want to send them to me, I can include them in my box, and will put them in a baggie with the donation sheet if you want. Or I could mail them back to you so you can have the fun of sending the box yourself.
Or maybe someone from closer will see this & offer to anneal for you, either way I'm good!

Coring and capping with brass should be OK. The problem with silver glass is that sometime the 'silver' is something else (lead, zinc, etc) and it's hard to tell them apart without a spectrometer. I don't think that anyone would use lead for this, so I don't see a problem.

The metals thing is throwing me a little. I've only got 10 beads at the moment, but after receiving the email today saying there was a great need, I was looking to see if I could put anything else in there. I have one or two more, but they are made with copper green, and have the reduction on there. So that brought the question to mind on copper green glass.
The ones I make for BOC specifically, I normally try to use the plain glass on, but not knowing bead chemistry, I'm now questioning myself on any glass that is reactive... like ivory reacts with CG, etc. What if we clean off the reduction?

The catch is that even though Copper Green isn't a lead glass the folks that do the sorting aren't glass workers and don't know the difference. They are supposed to pull any metallic-surface beads out to prevent lead glass from getting into the system. If you can keep them from having the shiny metallic surface then copper green is OK. Thanks for asking.

Thanks Robert, I'll pull it out. So this will be a very small group but they are going out today.
