Mike and Dale - thanks for all the help on my ventilation problems. I know you always tell people to put up baffles, but I can't believe what a difference they make! Bought 3 pieces of 24 x 36 sheet metal. Goes from hood to table on 3 sides. Also bought a piece that was shaped like a hood front (not sure what it is really intended for) and used it to extend the front of the hood by 6-8". It has a really nice rolled front edge. The baffles have taken care of about 95% of my venting problem. Roughly $20! I decided to keep the kitchen hood and just make changes to it as needed. The small fan will be removed. It gave me a starting point and I liked the light over my work area.

The 8" pipe is currently sitting beside my table. My husband has been swamped but has promised to get to it. I installed the baffles myself but want DH to go through the side of the house with the pipe. With the current efficiency by just adding baffles, I think our fan will be sufficient once the 4" PVC is replaced with 8" metal. Thank you so much for all your help on the mess I had.

I do have another question for you. Years ago I had a NG line installed. It didn't adequately power my Lynx so we had a propane line put in too. I have used the propane line exculsively. Today my propane tank ran out so I decided to try the NG again. It just won't power the torch. Maybe a 1" flame if I'm lucky. We have a powerful gas range and two fireplaces that have been converted to gas. The fireplaces get large flames in them if you crank up the gas. So why won't my torch work? Can it possibly require that much more pressure than large flames in the fireplace? The pipe appears to be the same diameter as the propane pipe. The NG line was put in by the same guys who put in the ventilation system that day - could that explain it?

Thanks,
Kathy

The problem is pure and simple, line pressure. The Lynx requires a high PSI pressure, around 5 PSI. Your in-house natural gas pressure is between 1/3 and 1/2 PSI, about 10 to 15 times LESS than your torch needs.

Thanks Mike! Got my propane filled today. Now I can go back to ignoring that extra NG line.

If you ever want another torch you could get one that would work well on your NG line... It wouldn't be as hot as your Lynx on propane, but it would be way hotter than your Lynx on NG! Since you've got a propane line and are happy with it, it would only be worthwhile getting a new torch if you want two. No sense in switching just because you can!

Your baffles sound great! Good luck in getting the new ducts and fun in! It sounds like you've got a good plan. :) :) :) -Heather

Thanks Heather. Never thought about a second torch. My son (12) is fascinated with making beads. Tonight he made a pumpkin. Who knows, maybe we will eventually need another. I'll keep that in mind.
