Hi everyone...

I am at the beginning stages of setting up a 10 x 12 shed as a lampworking studio.

I need to know what to do about ventilation.
I am running one minor burner,
But might upgrade to a bigger torch one day....

My dad has been researching fans,
And he doesn’t understand why I would need a HOOD...
Why not just put the fan above the torch on the wall,
And turn it on...?

I have been trying to explain to him that I need a hood,
I am using a range hood now, at 200CFm,
But from what I have been reading it is NOT enough,
Esp. since it is ducted out thru a flexible shaft for about 6 feet...

So,
I have the chance to get my dad to build me something custom and correct!!!
But I want to do it safely and as CHEAP as possible....
WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Also, once upon a time, I found directions on how to construct a BARLEY BOX.I can’t find them now, anyone have the link???

Thanks so much!

Teresa

The hood acts to trap and exhaust the fumes and combustion by-products from the torch. If you don't use one, you are essentially doing nothing but exhausting room air - which usually doesn't clean out the space in front of you.

No, 200 CFM and 6 feet of flex ducting is not good. The CFM requirement will be based on the size of the hood you use, and as a rough rule of thumb, use 8" smooth sided galvanized ducting with as few bends as possible, as straight and level as possible.

Hi Teresa,
I tried it first with no exaust, not a good idea, I got phemonia that spring(hummm I wonder why?) next I used a window fan, better but still not good, next I installed enough electric to run a 800cfm exaust fan, better still but not right yet, next I had a hood custom made ($130.00) and my Dad installed it. PERFECT. Now I don't need all the fan has to offer. But boy its nice to know that if I do I have it. I finally got it right.

If you havn't figured it out yet there is alot of info here. There isn't anything "they" don't know.

Hey I'll take a picture and you can see my masterpiece.
