I've been requested to do a tutorial on this technique and I decided to give it a go :). Thank you all for your support and your warm requests, I just can't say no ;)!
You can find the tutorial here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/TrollLover
It's about this:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2766/4359979966_0945e2f107.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4054/4359231283_ea5c7659c5.jpg

I'll be doing 2 shapes in this tutorial, the lentil shape and the (crunched) focal :). I will also use the newest DH glass too: CL-360 aka Clio and KA-356. I love doing this with reducing silver glass, but it can also be done with striking silver glass. Also great in regular colors, opaque and transparant.
Now is the time to say which other silver glass you would like me to tell about in my tutorial as well :)! Please let me know!

Yes absolutely, it's in my first tutorial, about reducing silver glass :).
Thanks for the support everyone, I very much appreciate it.
Carmen, no I'm so sorry, but I won't include the feathers... :hide: It just doesn't feel right to do so...

Just a little update, because I realise I have been quiet some time now :). The tutorial will be finished this week and will include:
- working with Clio
- making Armadillo beads, in a crunched focal and in a lentil
- making a flower murrini
- making a silverglass twistie (like the one on the lentil).
It will be another biggie, but the price will be <$20!
Hope you're all gonna like it :).

First of all, thank you for viewing my third E-tutorial! In this tutorial, I will help you making your own Armadillo beads. I’ve been asked many times how these beads are made, and by request I decided to write this tutorial on it.
It's a step-to-step tutorial with over 200 (!!!) pictures in 51 pages!
I will work with the newest silver glass by Double Helix (which is Clio) and I will also show you how to use Ekho for this design as well!
And not only Armadillo beads, there are 2 extra "mini" tutorials in this E-tutorial as well! First is a tutorial about silver glass twisties. I will share my favorite receipes and show you how I make and pull them. Second, there is a guide for making a "simple" flower murrini.
After receiving payment, it will be send to you by email (PDF file).
Because it's an E-tutorial, I can't refund your money if you're not happy with your purchase, sorry.
Thank you for your interest, I hope you will like this tutorial!

I think it printed just fine. I am so impressed at the pure genius of this tutorial, Anouk. That you sat and actually figured this one out . Wow.We could never do this with out the tutorial I'm sure. I made my first one today. It wasn't easy and I thought I was doing it wrong until I looked at it before popping it in the kiln. I could see some armidillos which is all i ask for on the first one.
Scoop it up, it's well worth the 20 bucks. Believe me.
OK deep breath and here goes!

Please bear in mind this is my first attempt,so be gentle :)
Made with Aurae.
I started off a bit too big and the bead is massive! it also cracked on the mandrel so I reheated it to heal the crack which is why one side is a bit smudged (that's my excuse anyway ;-) ) I also didn't do the final encasing coz the bead was already soooo big already.

Just bought mine this morning, waiting for it to show up in mail now. Really excited about reading it. I'll have plenty of time to study it as my kiln died Sunday and I have to wait for a part to get here before I can torch again. Wouldn't you just know it.
I thought I couldn't see the armidillo laps but as the bead cooled I could see some. I really screwed up the murrini because the glob was too large for the optic mold. Oops. I think it will take practice before I really know what I'm supposed to be doing. When my release broke at the very end I just slapped some branches and berries and popped it in the kiln.

On the supply list page of her tutorial that you can see in her Etsy store, it only shows reducing silver glasses as being used for this tutorial. Reduction glass works very well on the HH, so I'm sure you would be able to use a reduction silver glass and achieve the effect on your current torch. I don't know about using regular glass or not, but thought I would at least address part of your issue. Hope this helps.

Sonja, making a big lentil can be quite a challenge on a hothead, but the technique surely can be done and as MJ said, it works very well with reducing glass :).

the list of silver glass materials needed in the tutorial ...
• can any one of them be used, or are all 3 being used or 2 different ones?
• and do you go into some detail about how to get a good reduction?
I just want to know if I will be able to use the tut without purchasing new glass first.
Troll Lover
2010-04-02, 11:36pm
Cadia, any of the reduction glass out there can be used, but of course some need a different way of reducing. But for this tutorial, Triton, Psyche or Aurae can be used instead of Clio and/or Ekho too. The way you should reduce them works quite the same :). And yes, I do explain how to reduce them.
Hope this helps, thanks for your questions :)!

Hi Lisa ! Yours turned out gorgeous ! Rec'd mine, looking forward to some torch time :) Ellen
Anouk I have a question on a couple of my armadillo beads. Is there too little encasing clear on these and that's why it doesn't show up very well.
However in the lentil shape I finally got a good one.

thankyou Anouk for this, especially the bit about the murrini application, before I made this bead I spent about an hour making the blue rose cane. I made one before but I've never been able to use it successfully, and it was orange so I didn't think it would look good with the amber of the clio.
Im really pleased with how the rose came out, and the armadillo,(not that it shows that well in the pic) but the stringer needs some more work...some fell off the other side...oops!

Hi, I'm a newbie (having my own torch since May or so) but I was up for this challenge..... ;)
My first one was ugly, but my second attempt turned out quite ok, except that it was broken in 2... :(
Vermiculite (I don't have a kiln yet) did not like the silver glass and the size of the bead I reckon. Still I think it worth while to show.
http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab310/gootjemar/P1020681.jpg
I'm trying to make them smaller and really like this technique. I was actually making another one this evening.... which has a crack.... sigh...

Hi Pat! Yes, I would recommend more encasing on the whole bead, I made a bunch of Armadillo beads without giving it a final encasing layer and it does make a difference. If you encase thin, try 2 layers of final encasement before you press the bead. That lentil is gorgeous :D, well done!!!!
Madeline, great color combo's in that bead too, love the yellow/gold with the blue! A very good rose murrini too!
Gootjemar, that's a very good armadillo for the first try, wow! Armadillo's do get quite big, I can imagine that only vermiculite isn't enough, unfortunately... Try to use this technique in round beads perhaps?

what a great effect you got with that colour!
I found lentils & flat beads always broke in vermiculite for me, no matter whats in them.

thanks Anouk
I have since made a red rose murrini with less petals, but I'll use a different base bead for it, don't think it will go with the amber of the clio.

Where can I purchase your tutorial? I visited your Etsy, but it seems there is nothing for sale.
Thanks a bunch!

Anouk,
I've just found this thread and would love to purchase your armadillo bead tutorial, pleaseeeee. Is it still available?
Click on her picture here and send her a pm. I'm sure she has some but doesn't know the link is broken.

Hi Anouk, I went to Etsy but could not find the Armadillo tutorial. Then I sent you e-mail,
but if someone can tell me how to purchase the tutorial, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you, Sachiko

Anouk, when I try to buy this beautiful tut the check out process says I have to register. Is that the way Etsy works? Can I just check out without registering? Thanks!
