View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : What style torch do yo use?

I have been wondering about the demographics of different torch users and the torch style used in the different fields of lamp working. So this poll will be aimed mainly at the world of beads and bead makers.

What style torch do you use.

Where is the poll?

is cheetah single stage too then i assuem?

smutboy420
2006-03-02, 8:19pm
yup a cheetah would fall in to that catogory.

minot or bob cats would fall under single stage torch. redmax's and CC and other 2 flame torchs with and inner or and outer flame or a top/bottom would fall under 2 stage torches.

I have several torches to play on, three single stage and one two stage with 4 studs. I hope to play with a 3 stage some day...*looks at Willy and bats eyelashes*

My Phantom is a 4-stud, but I do not have a pedal. I think that a pedal would be really cool, especially if I'm doing regular detail work and then want to quickly heat up a gather to encase it. Keeping something warm in the back flame while heating a clear rod (especially if you peel it) already takes two or three hands. Having a foot pedal would be great becasue you wouldn't have to juggle stuff to turn valves - you would just step on a pedal to get that outer fire going. How cool is that?

I know what a Hothead is, but what are these "stages" you have there? Love to respond, but I've no clue what category I am in -- use a Carlisle MiniCC.

JanMD

Cosmo
2006-03-03, 8:28am
A Mini CC is a single stage O2 torch.

The "stages" can be determined by how many different flame regions the torch has. Like on a Mini CC, when you turn the torch on, all the ports work all the time. On some larger torches, like a Carlisle CC, GTT Phantom, Bethlehem Barracuda, etc. there is a center flame and an outer flame that can be operated independently of each other. Those are dual stage torches. Torches like a MidRange Plus and a Red Max (that have one flame on top of another) also fall into that category.

Triple stage torches are big torches with three separate flames like a GTT Cobra or the Herbert Arnold torches.

Bobcat, Mini CC, and Hothead here. For my next torch, I haven't decided between a Cheetah or the Barracuda. My plan to use it for borosilicate work exclusively, because the others are fine for the soft glass.

The amazing thing is how cool the troch runs. That the paint used on that Python is only rated to 250 degrees F and it's painted right to the end of the barrel up to the head of the torch. You could literally grab a hold of that barrel with the torch running like that. You can finish working on something, unhook the lines, and put it in your car and drive off that's how cool those torches are (because of the patented internal cooling system).

The flame coming out of that torch in the pictures is about 42" in length. The shoulder is about 3" in width at the face. It gets a little wider as it goes out.

And Chad, I believe that picture you posted earlier is of a Delta Mag. The barrel is wider on a Cobra. There are some pictures of Gateson rockin' the Cobra at AGI '04 on the GLDG.

Yeah, I have a Delta. And I even actually use the outer ring some times. However, I need to extend my hood and baffle my exhaust better because it set off my fire alarm the last two times that I did.

I use a Herbert Arnold 50 mm. It's pretty rockin for blown beads and wine glasses.
That is, when I'm not using my Lynx. it's definitely faster on pendants, but really, the Arnold is pretty super darn hot too.
I miss my Mirage, probably more than Aaron G. misses his Herbert!
I'm waiting to buy a Delta mag with a Phantom middle, whenever I pay some credit cards down. I imagined such a torch to be my 'dream torch' back before they even existed, so I'm looking forward to having one someday.

Thanks for explaining the stages to me Cosmo.
I didn't have a clue. I've only used a Minor, a Mini CC, and a Wildcat. I really like the Wildcat as it melts the glass really fast but sometimes its too fast for a little bead! I guess I should hook up the Barracuda one of these days...Paula

I got the chance to work on a Carlisle CC+ this past weekend. It's amazing how much the various torches differ. The face was roughly the same size as my Tiger Shark, and had about the same number of jets. But it melted stuff MUCH faster. I could make marbles in about half the time on one of those. I may be looking for one soon. I'd still like to try a GTT sometime, though...

Well I am finally a happy girl! I worked on the Cheetah that we set up at the studio for the last two weekends and love it! It melts BE like butter! But of course I had to try boro. I really like this torch because it has a busy flame and a narrow flame (as narrow as I need anyway), you won't accidentally reduce anything on it, and the barrel doesn't get hot. That's a biggie for me because the heat from the other bigger torches that I had tried was really bothering my middle aged eyes!

Over the years I have used Major/minors, major/premix, Carlisle CC, National 6b's with the htc1 tip, barracuda and at the moment a lynx. After my husband built my studio, he told me to get whatever equipment I thought I wanted or might need and since I knew only what I had read in magazines about lampworking I thought I needed one for soft glass and one for boro. I do know now that I could have just gone with the Mirage and since I've done a little boro but love my soft glass I have been thinking about selling it. I could definately put that foot pedal to some good use if your thinking about letting go. If you haven't used the mirage very much then you can more than likely get back almost all you paid for it. Gtt's hold their vaule better than any other torches especially if they have little use.

He's one of those "collectors" who never gets rid of anything, figures he may use it sometime down the road. My torch is a GTT Kobuki ... it is the best torch that I have ever used! The range of flames between the triple stages is incredible. The two outer stages are hooked up to a pair of locking foot pedals. With all stages going at once the flame is something close to a delta plus.

Here is a photo of it with all three stages fired up, but dialed almost all the way down. I've been using it for almost a year now, and doubt that I would ever need anything more in a torch.

i use a HH torch but hopefully getting into something a bit more in the near future. Though having some issues with finding "how to pick the right torch" and all the other technical terms and what each torch can handle before I purchace.

I'd love one of these! Can't afford it right now, unfortunately.

I am new to the site and eight months into learning glassworking (part time). I have been learning on a GTT hand torch (basically Lynx) and plan to get the GTT Mirage one day. For my first torch, I bought a smaller torch, a used Carlisle Hellcat, since a GTT Phantom was out of my budget right now. I am waiting for it to arrive as I type. From what I have read on this site, I should be happy with the Hellcat for any small to medium work I want to do. I am hoping between these 2 torches I should be able to do anything I want with glass, if and when I learn how too. There are so many different things to create, I really like this art form a lot and am very lucky I found a good friend in my teacher as well. I am glad I have taken the time to learn as much as I have about glass, beyond just antique vases and what they are worth. I look forward to what glass has in store for me in the future. Thanks for everyone who posts information here, it was nice to be able to check out all the different opinions and information before I bought a torch.

I'm using a used Nortel Rocket, I think I've fired up the outer ring once or twice just to see what it does.

Ed,
How is your torch shelf supported?

Using a Kobuki with 2 section foot pedal; center ring on 2 concentrators most of the time. Love that torch

I'm using minor. Don't see a need to go bigger, yet.... LOL!

I also own a hot head (somewhere) but rarely use it anymore.

I first used a Herbie in 1971. They were first made in the 1960’s?? & designed for scientific glass blowing, when you need to constantly change flame size (without oxy-gas ratio, thus flame temp is constant).
After a very long break from glass (& retirement), I wanted to re-start lampworking as a hobby, I know any other torch would be frustrating (to adjust both oxy & gas). It took 5 years to find a second hand one, it was in a very bad condition.

The Herbie has only 3 knobs: oxygen – to adjust from a normal flame to soft, reducing & flame annealing.
Air – I only use when working soft glass.
Flame size – this works an internal cam system, which adjust 6 needle valves to operate the 3 stage burner.

I had to re-condition several needle valves & then convert factory settings from natural gas to propane (fortunately I am an instrument engineer with experience on similar equipment, but it still took 2-3 months). My Herbie has 35mm diameter head, it goes from a needle flame (about 2 dia x 40mm long ie 0.08” x 1.5”) to a large flame (45 dia x 400mm ie 1.5” x 15”). Have used it now for 4 years, but still cannot handle the radiant heat of the big flame!!!

Herbies are designed to run at specific gas & oxy pressures – you need good quality gas & oxy regulators. One limitation is to use an oxidizing flame – you can trick Herbie by increasing the oxy pressure (but flame size adjustment is not as good – after oxidizing you need to reset the oxy regulator).

If you have the opportunity to try a Herbie, it will become you favourite torch. If you can obtain a second-hand Herbie, make shore all the flame adjustment work & it is setup for you gas (NG or propane).
