Im new to lampworking, read a few books but cant figure out how to add pastel ivory dots to a black bead. I am getting a fuzzy outline around the dot..how can I fix this?? What am I doing wrong? What is the best type of glass to do this with? I am using all 104!!

Dark ivory will "fuzz" out, light ivory doesn't. :) Good luck and welcome to the addiction!

Look in Corinna's book "Passing the Flame" She has a very good and clear explanation of what ivory does. The pictures are great. I highly recommend this book!! Try the library if you can it is expensive. (but worth it)

The Ivories are an extremely reactive glass color. The dark outline they get when used with blues, greens, and a bunch of other colors can yield some amazing results! One of the nicest things about glassworking is that even mistakes can look awesome.

Thanks everyone ... I'm so frustrated! I have Corinna's book but my Effetre Ivory Pastel dots on black don't look like hers. They get very light and I can almost see the black through them so I add more ivory but they just get bigger. I have to be doing something wrong. They are big fat fuzzy ivory dots on very average black beads. ](*,)

Fuzzy would show a dark ivory, and each batch of ivory can be different, as she notes. Do you have any other ivory to try?

There are 2 different blacks one is intense which stays black on ivory and one is transparent almost a purple that could be your problem

I've tried both Vetrofond & Effetre ... both are fuzzy. I have dark ivory too but these aren't dark. The Vetro even says "light ivory" on the tag. I'm perplexed.

Maybe heating it too much as you are melting it in?
Try using a white rod to put dots on your black base bead and see if that works out better for you. White isn't as reactive as the ivories are, and you might get better results.

I tried light ivory on back just to see tonight - it fuzzed a little bit, but the dark took over the bead... Silly different ivory batches. ;)
Or put a white dot under your ivory dot.

Melt the dots in slowly. Try it using white and if you get crisp edges then you'll know it's just the ivory reacting with the black.
