View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : How cool can a bead get while working it?

I'm pretty new and self-taught. I wondered how cool the bead can get when I work it. I use a hothead and am trying to make some little creatures with features. I try to keep the bead right under the flame and add details. Will this cause the bead to crack? Is it necessary to get the whole bead glowing again? Thanks so much for your help...Elizabeth

I really wish there was a cut and dry answer, but it varies with every bead. To answer do you have to get the whole bead glowing? Nope, you just have to keep it happily hot. Experience will teach you just how much heat is enough.

I know I've pushed it too far when I feel it crack! Darn, guess that wasn't the answer you wanted - Loco's is better!

You will learn with practise. I would give the bead a quick turn in the flame about every 5 to 10 seconds. Don't let it linger in the flame or you'll melt your decorations.

I agree with Alex and loco. Experience/practice is the key. I used to make sculptural beads on a Hot Head. If I could do it, anyone can.

I hold my bead near the flame and run in through often so it doesn't get too cooled. But yes practice and expierence is the only way you will learn how far to go with it. Just keep practicing and you'll see amazing results.

While practicing make a bead with wonky ends and fix it! Then let that bead crack and fix it! Then, well you see where this is going....

Mess up beads on purpose then fix them! You will learn a couple of things: When something goes wrong, you will not freek as you know how to fix it. Also you will know just how cool you can get your glass before it cracks.

Heck I still do this but I love a challenge so I have done quick dunks in the water and then fixed them. Sometimes this causes really kwell reactions! Yeeee Haaaaaaa PLAY.

Hey Loco, that is a really good idea! I have been torching for quite a while, but I never thought to do that. I might try and break some beads tomorrow. (But you can bet your buns that they are going to be simple beads!)
