View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : NG vs Propane and silver
I just switched to NG from propane. I have a set of beads I've made many times using propane and now I can't get them to turn out using NG. At first I thought it was the torch I was using so I switched to my old one. They came out the same. I use silvered ivory stringer for flower stems on these beads and now the stems just turn an awful black. They used to look like SIS. I have several orders for these beads and I can't make them now. Does anyone have experience with this???
Thanks,
Rose

This question seems to be kind of hanging in the air, so I'll toss out an idea. Have you looked at your flame chemistry? You might be running more of a reducing flame than you were before and getting a reaction out of the SIS that you aren't accustomed to. Try turning up the O2 (or turning down the fuel gas) and working a little slower. The oxidizing flame is a little cooler, but might keep you from blackening the SIS.

Well, Robert.... how did you know? LOL I am having some other issues as well with a new torch I got. It was more of a reduction flame than my minor. So I switched it out and went back to the minor and they came out the same. But you may be on to something here. I will play with the settings more and see how it goes.
Thanks,
Rose
You do have to turn NG down more than you might expect to achieve an oxidising flame... try dialing your fuel down a bit more than you're used to, and see if that helps.
