Call for Artists

Lori Robbins and Kimberly Scott are in the beginning stages of a series of books. The first being... " A guide to hot glass colors and techniques. The study of Purples and Pinks ". This is the latest addition to the Lori Robbins' library of Hot Glass reference books. In this book Lori and Kimberly will focus there attention on the use of Purples and Pinks in all glass COEs. A portion of the book will be dedicated to debunking the myths, providing tips and giving important working information for the use of Purples and Pinks. The rest of the book is focused on YOU!

Lori and Kimberly are pleased to offer an opportunity to get your work in Purples and Pinks published!! What a great opportunity to show case your work and to share your glass knowledge with other artist. If accepted into the book, your very own Tutorial of your work will be spotlighted in full color!

Applying will take place in stages:

*Email Kim@HeavenlyFire.com a .jpg of your work in Purples and/or Pinks

*Send only unedited photographs

*Send no more than two at first

*The deadline for wave 1 is May 31st 2006

Lori and Kimberly will notify you if you are accepted into the book and give you further instructions. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept everyone for an article as some may be repeated. If not chosen you will receive a mention with a link of your website or your email address in the final publication in appreciation for your effort.

A few things to keep in mind:

*ALL types of glass work are acceptable in ANY COE. This includes fusing, furnace work and perhaps something we haven't thought of, surprise us.

*The glass that you choose should be currently and normally available for sale.

*Techniques can range from beginner to advanced.

*Keep in mind, you are going to want to send the best examples of your work, this is a public project for the whole world to see.

*Your work will be used in Tutorial format, please do not share any techniques that you don't want published to the masses.

Please email Kim@HeavenlyFire.com or FlaLadyBird@Yahoo.com if you have any questions.

We look forward to see your fabulous work!

Sounds really cool. Purple is my favorite. Can you give more information on photo formatting (IE size) you are looking for.

AVCKimberly
2006-03-06, 7:48am
Thank for the question and interest Lara!

Right now there aren't any picture requirements, just try to send .jpg. Size doesn't matter either.

This first wave in the submission process is to narrow down to the final tutorials.

I was going to add something very important to this thread but I got distracted by a purple sumo-hippo butt dancing in my face.
OMG so funny!
Oh I remember. Is anyone playing with Kuglar colors? Just asking because I picked on a rod last night that is so much more intense and more behaves than Rubino. If you force me I will find out the number.

Oh Wow!! Kim and Lori - I'm so excited! Ya know, I've always envied the artists who can list the magazines and books (or even tv shows, in some cases) they've been featured in. Never having been published myself, I wonder how it feels. Is it a validation? Do you finally feel you've "arrived" as an artist once you see your work and your name in print?

I can't wait to send in my submission! Crossing fingers and toes - I wanna be published!!!

I may be a bit dense but I don't understand how you can announce finalists before the deadline??? Could you please clarify?

I am So excited for Kim and Lori, and it's looks like it will be a wonderful book. What a beautiful thing to see will be a book full of just pink and purple beads! As far as colors go it seems people have the most questions about Pinks and Purples.

Off to the torch to see what I can come up with. What fun! \\:D/

Question: With the pictures we send in now, if we are accepted, will you be using that picture or will we be able to make another bead and send in a better picture? Some of my coolest purple beads are beads I sold 1-2 years ago and the pictures aren't that great.

AVCKimberly
2006-03-06, 7:01pm
Good question Lara! Yes, if you are accepted, you can create your tutorial from any bead that you choose. It doesn't have to be the bead that you submitted for the first wave.

Question.
Seeing as this is a book and will be sold for a profit, will there be royalties for those whose tutorials are published? It seems to me that the hard work developing techniques, writing articles, and photographing processes should be rewarded. I am always a bit leery of giving anything away when others are profiting from it. Perhaps profits could be donated to a good charity?

AVCKimberly
2006-03-07, 12:01pm
Hey Trey,

Thank you very much for your concerns, we totally understand.

We believe that the fact that we aren't charging a fee for entry into the book, otherwise known as a publishing, advertising or submission fee should be a consideration as well. We plan on keeping the industry standard of two free books for each person making it into the article/tutorial section. There are other things to be taken into consideration as well.

There is an enormous financial burden when undertaking a project of this magnitude: printing costs, hiring of professional photographers, etc... And truth be told, no matter how well planned a project may be - there is always some unforseen problems that drive the "out of pocket" costs up. We aren't asking, expecting or even wanting the artist community to help us shoulder the fiscal responsibility. It's our necks alone we are risking. Other than the perks already discussed, the international exposure garnered from being published is priceless.

As for your personal efforts, you are more than welcome to make a submission using the guidelines in the first post, if you so desire.

Jena
2006-03-07, 12:36pm
Hmmm...I'm gonna play devil's advocate here for a sec. You know there's no guarantee that they're going to sell every single copy they have printed (although I am extremely hopeful that they will!!:-D ). Just because you publish a book doesn't make you a millionaire a la Steven King.

My personal opinion is - if they're willing to take the risk then I think they should be able to reap the reward. I also think that if you aren't comfortable sharing your secrets for free - then don't. No one will ever know if you chose not to enter or just weren't selected!:devang:

Just to clarify. All I need right now is photos of your best work. Please hold off on sending tutorials right now. I am going to be sending a format for them with the acceptance of work into the book. I don't want you guys to have to do double the work.

I so wish you guys could see all of these gorgeous entries!!!

Thanks so much!!

Teresa just alerted me that I had a typo in my original post. I had replaced COE with CEO. I guess I wanted the glass to be Chief Executive Officer of a major corporation! :D :D :D

Keep those entries coming!!! My mailbox is over flowing and I love it!!

Kim, I didn't even see that and probably wouldn’t in a million years. It's so fun being dyslexic.

another idea for boro workers...........

I would like to see what you do with amber purples/ passions. You don't have to have a pink of purple outcome. I know I can get the most gorgeous greens and turquoises. Just some food for thought.

I'm not much of a pink/purple guy but this looks interesting. I'm teaching at Bullseye this weekend and thier new pink absolutely rocks! Maybe I could do a pink/purple Warring States bead? Boy, those colors would really make it unique!

6 weeks left

You know..... Gold leaf fumes a very cool pink, and we haven't had any of that submitted yet.

Layering is a good start if you don't have anything else in mind.

Got your own mix of frit?

Haven't received any fusing yet. I know you are out there!

More boro! Frit yes?

REACTIONS, always can use those!

Well, it's officially March 31st and we are two months away from the deadline for submissions! If you haven't gotten yours to me yet, what are ya waiting on?

I have had many emails saying...but I don't work in Pinks or purples. Well, this is the time! Crank up that torch! You may be an afternoon and an email way from being published!

A few things to keep in mind....

**You don't have to start your work in Pinks or Purples, but if it results in either color...send it in!

**If you start your work in Pink or Purple and it ends up another color...send it in!

Let's all stretch together! I have uncovered lots of great things in these palettes by just playing around to see what I would get.

Sorry guys, I rarely log on any more to give any information. I talked to Lori and she said that she would like to get together after the Holidays to figure everything out.

I honestly don't know any more than that. I wish that I had more news...I am so sorry.

Could you ask Lori to post to give us an update?

Lara, Lori has had some personaly difficulties that I am not sure she would want me to discuss. I am sure that after the holidays we will both make an annoucement.

Sorry for all of the trouble.

:( This is getting kind of frustrating. Can there at least be an email to those of us who contributed to let us know what's going on and when we can expect things to happen? It's been so long, and I am afraid my tutorial will become kind of out of date. I know it was said that Lori was having personal issues, and I can completely understand, but it's been several months since that was said. At least a short email to let us know whether the book will be finished or not, and to kind of touch base to those of us who contributed to it would really be appreciated.

Yes, an email would be the polite thing to do, not to mention the professional thing to do. We all worked hard to make tutorials specifically for this book, I know that mine took hours to finish, I am sure everyone elses do too, we really do deserve to hear something from one of you.

I have heard from an undisclosed source that this is simply not going to happen, someone has a fulltime job now and is not into the whole glass thing anymore, something went wrong with certain pictures which would mean that they would all have to be redone again, and other things.... Anyway, since we've had no communication, I believe this to be true. But I will say that I am really disappointed in how this whole thing was handled..or rather NOT handled, but just abandoned without a word.

Wow - that's just really disappointing to hear. If they need to cancel this project they really should just tell everyone so we can get the tutorials back and move on. I'd like to submit elsewhere at this point if this goes on much longer without any communication.

Kandice, I think that your best bet is to write personally to Lori or Kim and tell them that you have decided to pull your tutorial from their book (which is not likely to ever see print anyway) because it has been so long with not one word or update. Then you could submit it elsewhere, I am sure there are plenty of magazines or other book authors who would be happy to have it. Personally, I wouldn't wait for something further to happen with this because it isn't likely to.

I am so bummed - this was my first shot at something I had made being in print. I think I sent beads to be photographed, will we get those back? I suppose it's no big deal, but would really like to know what's going on. :(

I haven't heard this, but suspected something like this to be going on. I understand person issues too, but a post here or an email would be nice. Frankly, I can't remember which beads I submitted with photos (lost a buch of stuff with a virus). It has been 2 years since the first post.

This too was going to be my first publication. BUMMER

Yeah....it's a shame. My first shot at being published too. Oh well. I still have copies of my pictures, but I can't seem to find my write up. *sigh* This is a bummer. :(

What frustrates me most I think is that Lori is currently selling on ebay, so it's not like she's not been online to update people.

You know, I really, really hate being forced into being a bitch. The lack of communication is making me mad at this point. So, I finally sent a PM to Kimberly, and copied it to an email to Lori (she hasn't posted to LE in so long, she might not see a PM). Here's what I wrote:

"Kimberly-

can you or Lori please, please update those of us who submitted tutorials for your book on purples and pinks? It's been so long since we have heard anything either by email or on the forums. The lack of updates or even the lack of a courtesy of an email is really disheartening. I really didn't want to have to write, but it's incredibly frustrating that our public requests have been ignored for so long. If you're not going to publish this book, please have the decency and professionalism to just tell us so we can pull our tutorials and get them published elsewhere. It's been over two years, and there has been extremely poor communication. I understand Lori has had personal issues, but she is selling on ebay, so it's obvious she has the time to write a simple email. Don't keep us in the dark any longer, please. "

We've been nice, we've been patient, we've asked kindly for updates, and have been ignored. The idea that now I have to be mean to get a response just really makes me mad. I don't like being the bag guy. Dammit.

I do apologize for not seeing these posts. I don’t log on to LE but for once in a blue moon. Kim was much better at keeping this post on watch but I don’t know how much time she has anymore. We haven’t gotten together to discuss the book’s future due to our schedules. The book has had some problems. The quality of some of the photos submitted weren’t printable (600dpi). But I think they might be good enough for online (72dpi) One idea was to do it as an online book instead of canceling the whole project. That is what we were going to talk about doing and how to go about that. Another thing that the online book would clear up was the length issue with the book. We had to limit the printable pages that would have squeezed some longer but very good articles to where they wouldn’t have been complete or just out and I didn’t want to do that. For those of you who need to pull out to submit your article in other places, please do so. I believe I have sent all the beads back when you requested them before. But if I haven’t and you need them back, contact me thru the email not pm’s and we will make arrangements. We will contact everyone who has contributed to the book before we publish to make sure we still have permissions. To my knowledge and experience with magazines and books, they don’t send updates to the contributors so I never thought it was necessary. I apologize for not meeting your expectations. In the future please email me to find out information.

Photos don't need to be 600 dpi to be printed. 300 dpi is the industry standard for color work. I think whoever your publisher is may have given you wrong information.

If you need any help with that side of things, I own a printing/publishing company, so I'll be glad to help.

I know a lot of people were excited about this project, and I hate to see it get sidelined because of something like this.

But Lori, Kim said she was going to talk with you and update us a couple months ago and nobody did. You started the project by posting here and just an update after 1 year (post from Kim 3-25-07 "We are well on our way to publishing the book") is not asking a lot.

We were all so excited to be included and eager to see the end product and curious as to the status.

Hello guys!

Thank you so much for your emails and PMs. I do apologize, I no longer log into LE as well, so receiving this urgent plea wasn't received. For those of you that sent emails to my Heavenly Fire email, it was hacked quite a while back and I wasn't receiving any emails there as well.

Lori is correct, we are working on some form of electronic way to get your tutorials to the public. We believe that will be the most cost effective way to go.

I do understand that you are all upset and I so apologize for not meeting your expectations. We will do our best to make sure that your hard work doesn't go unnoticed. I personally have spent many nights lying awake trying to figure out some way to make this up to my many friends and peers. I can't express how sorry I am!

Yes, you are correct. I was not able to maintain our family and make a living selling my artwork and had to seek full-time employment to frankly feed my family. That does not mean that I am no longer 'doing the glass thing' and dropped the entire project. It really saddens me that my family's hard times were used as a weapon to punish me when I could no longer afford to devote myself full-time to this project. Instead attempting to contact me to find out why I dropped out of the glass world and offer some type of moral support, someone chose to use it as a weapon. Again, that so saddens me from a group of people that I counted as my friends. If this wasn't meant to be hurtful, please let me apologize in advance.

I understand if you choose not to be a part of the project and I can't blame you a bit! We will do our best to make up for all of the disappointment that we have caused.

Lastly...Thanks Anne and Jennifer for your sweet emails!

I'm not sure what you mean by using your family's hard time as a weapon - I hope that's not directed at me for posting what I did. I would never ever do anything like that. My view is that because the Call for Artist thread was posted here to begin with, that updates would be posted here as well. When none came, I was frankly surprised. I never knew you were having family issues. I did end up emailing both of you, but got no response. That's why I posted here. I do appreciate the responses from both you and Lori here in the thread recently. I was only ever bothered by the lack of communication - not the way you were handing the project itself. If someone had just posted some kind of small update once in awhile, it would have been totally fine.

As it is, I feel really bad for having the desire to pull out of the project, so I am going to leave it be for now. I'm not sure what else to say except that I am sorry.

Kandice,

Thank you so much for your heartfelt message. It wasn't directed per-say at anyone, but I did feel that everyone needed an honest explanation of my circumstances. I have no excuse for not logging on to update everyone of my status other than life just got in the way and for that I am sorry...you guys have no idea how sorry!

Please don't feel bad for me. Yes, I did have to go back into the working world, but I have a great job that I love! I am one of the Marketing Managers for Bruster's Real Ice Cream AND I lead an organization called Friends Helping Friends that is raising awareness and money for Childhood Cancer. I work closely with three little girls that all have Cancer and they, along with my family are the joys of my life. God has a way of moving your life around so that He can have you where He needs for you to be. Right now....I am exactly where God needs me to be and I am so humbled and honored by it.

Lori and I spoke a bit last night and plan on speaking again tonight. We will both update everyone soon with an update.

Take good care everyone!!
Kim

I'm glad to hear that you both are doing well and haven't abandoned the project. I also wasn't trying to cause trouble, but time and again we have had no response, not here in the original thread and also not to private emails. When I was told that the project was dead do to complications, well, with no other communication to say otherwise, it was hard not to believe that it was true.

I felt bad for the people who really were looking forward to this and had been waiting so patiently and so based on what I was told, I suggested that they pull their tutorials and have them published somewhere else if they were tired of waiting and since we were getting no response at all from either of you...I'm glad that you have resurfaced to clear things up.

Hi, I just found this thread. I basically went from the first page to the last to see if you were still looking for pink/purple beads for your project. Are you?
Did I miss something in between?
Thanks,

After carefully weighing all of the options, Kim and I regret that we
are going to be unable to complete the Pinks and Purple Publication.

To all of the faithful artists that worked so hard on their
submissions, we are truly and deeply sorry for any of the hurt and
disappointment that has been caused by this decision. We would also
be remiss if we didn't explain why we were lead to make this very
tough choice.

First off, as life always does, it just got in the way. We both
experienced changes in jobs, family responsibilities and other
personal issues that impeded our ability to produce a top quality
publication. A few more of the defining factors were the changes in
the Lampworking world and the economy, making financially supporting
the project impossible for both of us. We had, at one time, confirmed
an investor, but with changes in this person’s industry, investing in
a project like our wouldn't gain a positive return on their investment.

We can't tell you how very sorry we are that we have had to
make this decision. Please believe us when we say this was a dream
for us as well and we both feel the weight of your disappointment
personally.

If you submitted actual work for photography or for future
use and you would like to have that work returned to you, please
email us at lorikimbook@gmail.com .

If you have any questions or comments, Kim and I will be responding
to email at lorikimbook@gmail.com . We will no longer respond regarding this
issue in any online forums, there just isn't enough time in the day
to respond to more than one medium.

Again, thank you for all of your kind words, your phone calls and
email and especially, your patience.

*Note about time responses from Lori....I am having some weather related problems with my phone and sometimes with my Internet server due to the St John's river flooding. Hopefully it will clear up soon and we aren’t hit with another hurricane/tropical storm. If I can’t log on at my house I will be traveling to my sisters at lease once a week to check my email. My PM’s on LE are turned off. Please use listed email above.

Okay....but you probably need to email your participants - not everyone sees this thread.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to scrap this book idea, but I understand about life getting in the way.
