View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : What is it with Moretti Red Copper ? Help please
Ok, not sure if I should post this here so if it needs to be moved Mods, please do.
What is it with this color ? I just don't get it ! lol ! If you look at the pictures, you can see what I"m referring to. All the beads except one, turned out to be a lovely pinky color, nice but then you see the one that is dark - yuk ! lol ! Awful. I didn't do anything different from all the rest, didn't touch the dials on the torch, didn't work any hotter or cooler, same rod for all the beads. Everything the same. So, what happened ? Did I breathe on it or something ???? lol !
Thanks,
Debbie A.

Hi Debbie,
That looks like Moretti carnelian, and I think that somehow that one bead got too much propane and not enough oxy... that looks like carbon in the dark bead.

Thanks Lynne, you're probably right. Didn't think of that. Must of had a burst or something. lol !
Oh, and it is Red Copper. That's the color name that was listed when I bought it waaaaayyyyyyy back about 10 months ago. lol !
Thanks again,
Debbie

It was obviously mislabeled. It's definitely carnelian. What color was the rod before it hit the flame?

I saw the pictures and thought carnelian as well. Did the seller change the name for some reason? Weird.
I'll take a picture of the glass tomorrow and post it. When I bought it I was so new at all this so you all could be right. I went over to the website where I purchased it and it's the same now as it was then.
Debbie
You looked at it wrong! LOL

I think that a couple of the suppliers label this glass as copper. Most of the larger ones use what I consider the correct name which is carnelian. It is an opalino color.
You did a great job of bringing out the pink tones - by the way!
Yeah, I think you did a great job getting the color to come out! I get a pale butterscotch pudding color. Blahh...I wish it was a bit richer than that. :(
Ok, here's the picture I just took in the morning sun. Pardon the shadows, it was a quicky shot. lol ! One package as it came to me via Jodel Glass way back when. You can see how it's marked. The black ink is THEIR writing. I just went to the website as of 8:00am today and it's still listed as same:
MO536 Moretti Opaline Red Copper. Yep, one and same. lol ! I haven't check other websites to see if it's same number but think I'll do that.
The first pics in this thread were done inside using my photo tent and lighting.
And Thank-You kindly for the compliments on getting the pink to come out. I hadn't played with this color in a long time and had to try it again.

Well, very interesting ! Would seem Carnelian is the "way it is" ! lol ! Went to Arrow Springs and Franz and that's what they have for #536 ! lol ! Very interesting. Wondering why Jodel has it listed as Red Copper ? So, mystery (to me anyway ! LOL ! ) solved !
Thanks for the help you all !

Because Jodel likes giving new names to glass? ;-) It's a tendency I've noticed there, in any case.
A stained glass supplier in my town calls the carnelian copper also. Go figure!

It was called red copper for many years. I still have older color charts listing it as so. It is one of my favorite colors, reacts delicious with frits, and try encasing with different colors of transparent, yummy! You did a killer job of bring out the colors.

Hi there!
I just read this thread a little late.
I was surching for "carnelian" and got finaly here.
I don't like the pseudonyme names stores give to the glass. I like to know whats it's called in real!
IT's not really nice to see that you maybe already have this glass color under the real name.
And I would not buy name changed glass from a store when I know this!
Have a nice weekend :-)

Sometimes it is best to use the number of the glass instead of the name.

Hi Kimberly,
sure you're right! But I keep names easier in my brain than numbers ;-)
Don't know why... I always have to write things down other wise I will forget very soon *ohmygod...amIsoold*??
:-)

that is 100% carnelian not red copper green. I have 1 lone rod of red copper green that I bought from jodel..it is definitely red copper green and they sold it as red copper green. very interesting colour. Pity I dont' have more of it so i can ACTUALLY play with it (at the moment it is just a very expensive back scratcher!! ever used a rod to do it while at the torch? it works a treat!!!)!!!!

Anyway, back to your question! IMHO, you burned it, or your flame had too much propane. I see some dark streaks in some of the other beads too, and in the end of the rod...the end of the rod looks burned. Just be sure you don't overheat it, and that you aren't using too much propane. If you are on a hothead you may not be able to change your flame, but don't get it too close to the torch head or it will burn!
Hope this helps,
Patti
C.R. Loo calls carnelian "copper" too. (Their catalog has it listed as "copper" with the notation that it strikes, so people call it "copper strikes.")
The names may change, but the numbers stay the same . . . of course, the color is different every time you buy it, so the number is pretty much the ONLY thing that stays the same.
