In my wanderings around online, I just landed on lampwork artist Ellen Dooley's website (whose work I love) and noticed an interesting link she had posted. It's a video (in Danish, LOL...the visual is cool though) of how Vikings used to make lampwork beads, including making a kiln. I thought it was very interesting! (I'm probably the last person on the face of the planet to see this video, right?? Sorry if it's already been posted here a million times).
I wonder how many people would choose to get into this craft if this was still the way it was done?:)

Well, you're not the last person on the planet. I hadn't seen it either and all I can say is ............. wow.
You're right, not sure if I'd have been so happy to jump into this obsession if I had to do it like that.
cheers

yeah, I have seen that video, well I am asuming I have - havent opened the link yet, but seems the same. And Kikki kindly translated the text on a similar page for me, which explained how to make the kiln, step by step. I am an SCA'er, so I am into historical beads and techniques

That was great - thanks Rachel! It was fun listening to the Danish too! I lived in Norway and summered in Denmark as a teen and haven't heard it spoken in a long time!!! I was more surprised to be able to pick out some of the words too! Sonje

That was so interesting!!! I'm Swedish but don't know the language, but the Danish reminded me of my grandmother.
I remember reading somewhere that the viking glass beads were as valued as amber and that women wore great long mixed strings of them!

Wow, that was really neat! With my rusty German and English I almost understood it too :D

Cool video! Thats a neat little 1 day furnace/kiln they build. Pretty high tech for vikings.

I wonder what kind of glass they used. It looked downright sticky in the video when they were laying stringer. Thanks, cool video!

Kind of makes you revisit your impression of vikings as nothing but a bunch of pillaging barbarians, huh? I mean if they were into making beads, how bad could they really be.

Totally cool! It always humbles me that such beautiful artwork was made without the profusion of tools we have today. Makes me feel very unresourceful.

Here is a photo of a viking strand I made a few years ago, when I hadnt been torching long. Most of the beads in the strand are recreations of beads from the Frojel dig, in sweden. This strand is a fair bit longer now, and I am working on another piece at the moment.
