Hi all...
Can anyone tell me if the book Contemporary Lampworking by Bandhu Scott Dunham is good for beginners? It's a 2 volume set .
thanks again

Hi Leann
I'm a beginner and bought the set last year. I found it to be incredibly helpful. He has a very "zen-like" approach. Still, there is nothing like taking a class or 2 and having someone "walk" you through a few things.
Best of luck!
Eric

I bought Jim Smircich's DVD which is full of info on various shapes (Check out the thread below).
You might try the "search" function here, but basically I don't think there is any "secret"...It takes practice and time........rotate slowly and keep the mandrel level....I still get wobbles when I make beads.....applying the wrap in an even way helps too...I always have a bump left which takes forever to melt even.
If you're only making beads, you might want to invest in one of Cindy Jenkins books. She has 3 great publications......Dunham's books cover so much more they can be a bit daunting at first.....
I just started looking at threads on this site and am finding there is a wealth of info here...It just takes time to search it all out...Good luck and have fun!...

Second vote for "Smirchich makes beads", and you can rent it on the web... I think the site is Technical Video Rental, but don't have the link.
I also found Corina's "Passing the Flame" good, though it's pricey compared to the others. I found it more helpful than the Cindy Jenkins book I have. I haven't looked at Dunham's book.
For book reviews, DVD and video reviews, and summaries of contents, see: http://www.sgb-midatlantic.org/book_reviews.html
That might help you decide what books to invest in.

Leann,
Take the bead out of the flame to shape it...it wants to be round, let it.
Contemporary Lampworking is the glass Bible. Passing the Flame is expensive, but for a beginner..worth every penny. Everything you wanted to Know About Beads, also excellent book.
Have Fun!
