View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Plans/Designs for Fuming Hood?

I want to construct a fuming area for use outdoors this summer. I'll be working with some very toxic stuff, and will not use it inside my home studio. I need to create a fuming hood to contain the nasties, and am looking for plans, designs or ideas.

Also, I'll be going directly into a kiln in my garage. The problem? No power in the garage. Does anyone know if the small toolbox annealers like the Chili Pepper or Don McKinney's Toolbox Annealer can be safely plugged in via heavy duty extension cord?

Tink, if it's really nasty stuff, you might also want to put in a scrubber unit.

And about the extension cord... don't tell anyone, but I will sometimes use one with my JenKen bead annealer.

I figured I would probably have to exhaust the hood air through some kind of filter that would trap the nasty stuff. I've read about using water, but I think it might be harder to manage disposal of the water than some other kind of filter.

Frankly, I hate to put too much into this, not knowing if it's something that I will continue to use on a regular basis.

Hi Tink!

Here's a link I found about extension cords from Underwriters Laboratories that will give you all information you'll need to select the appropriate extension cord. Have fun!

BTW, I love your work. One of these days, I want to get into electroforming. I love the effect! I'll be sure to get all the stuff from you (if you still have it then!)

I ran my Chili Pepper (which only draws 8 amps) and my generator off of an extension cord in my little home studio as there were no more outlets and no way to add any more. I had very fat extension cords that a friend who is a wizard about this stuff helped me pick out. Paula

If extension cord meets or exceeds current requirement of annealer you are going to be ok... Look at nomenclature tag on annealer to see how many amps it draws and get e-cord that meets that requirement or has larger capacity...

The above mentioned UL site is good information...

Oh, stannous chloride and similar nasties :-)
