Cattwalk crunch tool

I am checking out tools at cattwalk.com and I came upon a "crunch tool". I wonder how one uses them? Obviously it's a type of glass smasher. I don't know how it creates the shapes it does? You start out with a regular round bead, heat it glowing orange and then smash or what? If anybody uses one of these I'd be grateful for the info.
