View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Any interest in a BoroBox???

Would anyone would be interested in doing a Boro glass box to pass around like the GeoGlass Box in the game room???
Glass, silver/gold, tools, findings, molds, frit, etc.
Basically a sharing box. You get it, take some stuff out, put some stuff in, send it to the next person.
What do y'all think?
Sign ups for BoroBox is CLOSED

I'm in Canada...Can I play? - (got lots of goodies, can't help myself!)
...Val
I'd be interested. The only request I have is that you wait a few weeks to get started. We have shows most every weekend from now until we go to Asheville with Mr Smiley the first week of May. I won't have ANY spare time until then.
But, I love these kinds of things, so just put me later on the list and count me in.

Oh goody!
Of course you can play Val.
And you're in Chad, just further down the list :)
I think we'll need at least 10 to play, so we'll see how it goes.
I am in, I'll throw down some big murinni chuncks! OOO I have so many goodies!

I'd love to play!! I don't have a lot of boro, but i'm willing to share :D
Earlier, I was about to post that I was interested in participating, but while I was typing, my computer spontaneously shut off for no apparent reason and wouldn't stay on again for more than 1 minute.
I think this is a sign that I should NOT participate.

Run a full virus scan on that puppy now!
Eric
Well, I use Linux, so it's not your usual spyware and virus infested Windows machine with Outlook shining like a beacon to the criminal underworld.
It's a kind of flaky older laptop. Every night around 4 am something weird starts happening, like the display shuts off and won't turn on again, even in the BIOS sequence, until the next day. It might be possessed.
Since it was shutting down spontaneously, while booting, it's not likely to be a virus or other security issue. I think theres a short or something - the charger hookup is screwed, just like every other laptop older than 2 years I' ve ever seen (clearly how they make you buy new ones). I don't know, it's working now!
And this has nothing to do with a Boro Box.
Sure, send me a Boro Box! I have a bunch of weird stuff to pack in there.

Ok I will start a box w/ a whole bunch of goodies, then mail it to the next person on the list (I'll do a random thing) they go thru it, take some stuff out, put some other stuff in, maybe make a bead/marble/gift or something for the next person and send it off............hopefully w/ in a week [-o<
I usually mail everything Priority w/ delivery confirmation. Then the last person on the list sends it back to me.
Also, in this thread, try and keep the other players updated w/ when you receive it, what you took out and what you put in, and then when you mail it on to the next person. You can go and check out the Geo Glass box threads in the game room to see how they have worked.
I was thinking at least 10 people to start it :-k
I am going to Mountain Glass Arts, yes again :-D , today so I'll get a bunch of extra stuff to start the box off and get a list going of what I'll put in.
This will be fun.

Suzanne, so I've never mailed anything to the Netherlands, how much does it cost and how long does it take? usually? any better method to ship than another?
USPS will probably be the cheapest to send it, but it will also be the slowest.

2006-03-22, 10:48am
I just sent a bunch of products in Oct. to the Netherlands, Its a hassle. They have the VAT tax on all incoming goods, and its like 21%. Shipping itself is quite spendy also. It was cheaper for me to send two people with my products in their luggage than it was to send just a box in the bottom of the plane:-k
O' well. Dad was happy to go over and im sure my shop mate nadia didnt mind either. Maybe ill get a passport so i can go next time.

Shipping is quite easy to the Netherlands. It is expensive, but I am more then willing to pick up the tab for shipping. Customs do get their hands on stuff a lot, and will add 19% of taxes on the total value of the package ( wich has to be stated on the customs slip. ) I usually receive my items within four days, but it can take six weeks if customs do hold back on the item.
Best thing would be for me to drop out , I don;t want to spoil a wonderfull plan:) I wish you all tons of fun and I will be watching this thread!

I thought they fixed the jade??
It used to be horrible, but i tried some a coupl months ago and it was really nice to work. Did i just get part of a freak batch?
B
I thought they fixed it too. I'm not sure what happened with Eric's pendant. I haven't had the chance to play with it yet, but will post an update when I do. Even is it is still persnickety, I like the color so much, I think it would be lovely unencased. I'm assuming it's a chrome color, and there are issues with encasing many of the chrome colors.
boroburner
2006-03-25, 7:38am
strange...... If i had to guess i woulda said cadmium, mostly cause it reminds me of the crayons in both density and working characteristics. It used to boil if i remember right. I only got a sample rod from my supplier of the new and the old i had enough BAD experiances with to turn me off of nething called jade.
I dont remember if the new boiled or not, i know it didnt crack under clear.
B
Yeah, Jade is chrome. All of the opaque greens and most sparkles are. They usually aren't anywhere near as touchy as cadmiums.
Forest Green, they fixed by lowering the COE. Probably that has happened with Jade by now, but theres probably still a lot of the old stuff floating around in inventory.
I made a couple of Jade beads. Two unencased, one encased. No problems with any of them. The glass did seem like it was considering boiling, but I worked it a bit further out. The only negative is where I added glass to one of the unencased beads - it looks a bit discolored. Perhaps the added glass got too hot. All in all, though, it worked just fine.

Eric, I feel like it should have enough 'stuff' in it to begin with and it will eventually get back to me w/ other 'stuff' :-D
I've never started a sharing 'box', only contributed, and I only took out what I wanted to put back in that was comparable, if that makes sense.
When it is somebody's turn, they can take as little or as much as they'd like out of the box, uhhh w/in reason :-\" but it should be replaced w/ the same amount. Not necessarily the same types of items that were taken out, but 'worth' the same amount of money or more, depending on what they have to 'give'.

Actually, having participated in many swaps and other things like this, the proper "box etiquette" is to put a "gift" in to the originator or the box (which would be you, Carrie - Queen for the day:biggrin: ). It would be really cool if everybody who participates puts in a special bead to you for organizing this, and then you get to make a necklace from all the beads. Then whenever you wear it, you "feel the love"
Wow, awesome bunch of stuff going in - I'm going through my special boro drawers putting together some yummy stuff to contribute! Can't wait!!!
I've been playing with making some custom frit blends, so I'll try and get some made so whoever comes after me can have some to play with (maybe multiple sample packs so everybody can try some?).

I am going to ask that everyone put the Delivery Confirmation in this thread for all to see.
I would also appreciate everyone Insuring the BoroBox.
I insured the box for $200, Priority w/ delivery confirm. and it cost me $14.20 FYI.
After watching another box in the Game Room go MIA after being stalled for 4+ weeks and then returned to sender

I forgot to mention that when I received the box a couple of the rods were broken. This always seems to happen, despite careful packing. I took a couple of these since they were colors I want to try. I made a new bundle of "shorts" which has the half rods in it, including the Spring Luster. The Pomegranite rod was inconsiderate and broke near the end with the label. I didn't take this rod since I just received some in an order. It's in with the full rods. Just to let you know.

Thank you, and sorry for the broken rods
Not your fault! Most shipments of glass I get have at least a couple of broken rods. And they're all packed well. I think many of the rods just need a little pressure in the wrong place to break. Plus, with the boro rods, it's actually helpful to have them in shorter lengths. I find I'm always swatting things with one end of the full sized rods while working with the other.

If you're going to put in a recipe book - can you make sure there's enough copies for everyone? I'm assuming it's a handmade one (photocopy kind?). I'd kill with my bare hands for a good boro recipe book (really - just give me a name:twisted:).
I hope I get it soon!!! I'm putting together all kinds of cool and nifty custom stuff - I just bought a special tool for making canes with and I'm aching to make some boro canes to share. I'm thinking some that can be used for florals and the like. Yum, yum, yum!

I would like some bead release too since i have none.... if i took some out of the container , how do I store it.... any tips .... or should I just dip my mandrels and pass the jar on ?....
I was excited to see the necklace cord.... I make lots of pendants .....but never have strung thme on cord....I even have clasps...but no cord.... so I took about 3' of the leather cord and am going to finally be able use my clasps !!!
I also found 3 sticks of color I have really wanted to try ..... Elvis, Almond Nugget, and Silver tears...
I would like to try a leaf or 2 of the Silver Foil.... I have a great idea for it....
I thought the silver necklace chains were very nice.... I tried a few things I made on them ... didn't look rite to me.... I would love to see what some other people have used them with .... I like the necklace.... but didn't take one... I would like to find a way to make something that would go with the in the future.....
So... What will I put in ?
Well... First off I thought you all may like to try some White dawrf Gunmounts ... ( i bet everyone wishes they signed up now...LOL ) ...so I will throw in enough for every one to get a few.....
I will also throw in a pound or so of the mixed gunmount colors....
I have a few rods of Glasstronix Purple ....( opaque ...non striking )
Maybe a few sticks of green Dwarf....
I have some .999 silver rolled flat ...easy to cut small chunks to fume with ...
A little Gold ....rolled flat as well....
A few Gilson opals....
I will try and find a few color rods that are not In the box...... and label them.... I know I have some Perriwinkle to throw in ...
And I thought I would put in a few lengths of Larger Boro rod maybe 10 or 12 mil ...( if anyone would like a chunk of something larger ... I can saw off a chunk up to 1.5 " ) ...
and maybe a few pieces of 12.7 tube and 1 " tube....
I think I need a bigger Box..... LoL...
This was really Fun !!!!!

Oh Carrie! When's it gonna be my turn? I could just bust with aniticipation! Everyone's comments and contributions sound fantabulous! What's the story about the dwarves...(??!?!?) Got no clue there! Oh I hope I get an opal...How much fun is this, eh guys? Oh, and hey Val there's a big diff between having the stuff we need, and then having the stuff we want! A lot of this stuff in the box is, to me, extreme icing on our collective cake of desire...Aren't we all so lucky???! LOL
Gunmount color? where did you find it? I had some 'turtle green' that was used in the tv industry fer sumthin... sweet buttery light green, wouldn't burn at all, Can't wait. If you haven't sent it out already I would be extra stoked on a chunk of that big ol rod you were talkin about. I just got a big pile of silicon from my little bro, it looks like space ship wreakage in space marbs, mirror like,I'll toss some in.

Just a quick note of concern- if people are putting glass into the box that is NOT boro (which it sounds like some are) they need to make sure to label it clearly with the type of glass and COE. I'd hate to use something from the box in my boro beads and find a pile of broken glass in the kiln in the morning.

So I was sitting waitin for the mail man to bring me the borobox, and I realize that it is past when the mail normally comes and no knock on door. I figured the box didn't come today, but I go to my mail box and there is a little slip telling me they tried to deliver and I didn't answer..This is such nonsense!!!!!! Our mailman is a lazy b#&%h! He did not even try to knock on my door, He didn't even come into my yard. I know this because My dog barks if you get near my house, ande my dog made no noise. If this was the first time I would not be as p!$sed, but this guy is just plain lazy!!!! Thre are no no parking signs on my street, but if the mail man needs to actually get out of his truck to reach your box he just skips it. I have seen him do it then i had to run down the street to get my mail. when I caught him he said if he can't reach it from his window It can wait till he comes back tomorrow. What happened to 'rain, snow. nor the dead of night'.... Isn't his job to actually give me my mail the day it shows up in his truck? Is he allowed to just decide not to deliver my mail if a neighbour is parked on the street in front of my house, in a spot that is a perfectly legal parking spot? How do I complain? Who to?

I feel ya' baylie!
When we lived in Key Largo we'd have a part-time driver on Sat. and any days our regular carrier was off and he sucked. Big time. I did complain to my regular gal (she couldn't stand him either because he was lazy) their supervisor, and then the postmaster. Sorry I was on a roll over a couple of months 8-[
Anyways, I was told technically because I had a gated yard they didn't have to come to the door, which is fine, all they had to do was beep the horn and I'd go out, and they knew I was home if my vehicle was in the driveway, but the sub driver wouldn't even do this, WTF? That is what pissed me off the most. It takes longer to fill out the slip than it does to beep, uhhh hello?
I called the post office one Saturday after he did this and he didn't have a cellphone for them to call and tell him to redeliver, so he had to bring it back out at the end of the day. I don't think we had many problems w/ delivery from him after that.
Where I live now, our carrier will come up our driveway, 1/3 of a mile to deliver if he needs a signature. He is awesome.
I am happy though that the BoroBox is 'there' somewhere in your city! Have fun and I'll let you know who is up next in a PM.
Got back a little while ago from chasing down the mailman, it looks like the box got drop kicked!!! Everything was fine though. When I caught up with the mailjerk he claimed that he rang my doorbell repeatedly.I don't have a door bell. my wife was sitting on the couch across the livingroom from the front door with the door open and screen closed. My dog goes berserk if someone steps on the porch, and she was sleepin next to the door. The jerk was very rude to me and got real close to my face with his when he told me " Its not my job" in response to me asking why he would just skip my box when cars were legally parked near it. This guy was trying to intimidate me, what a fool. All I wanted was my package. And now I am filling out a complaint against him. Oh, this is the same guy that left a Herbert Arnold sitting on my porch in the rain with out knocking or having me sign for it.
On a happier note this box is so full of boro goodness!! Those light green gunmounts look jut like the turtle I was askin about, only half as long. I wonder if they are the same? Asuggestion for those on the list after me, no packing peanuts, they get every where and leave little bits all over the glass(the biodegradable ones got all stiff and turned to dust). I will send this back out ASAP. postig pics later of the box as I received it. It looks as if it was dropped in a puddle then kicked! Nothing was hurt, which really blew me away.
Thanks to everyone who has gone before me,and a teaser for those after.........Would you rather have disco that works like butter or that explodes in the flame? I'll throw in my remixed version of non-shocky disco!!
Thanks,
Luke

That would be nice for somebody down the line. I haven't sharpened mine since I recently got a nice tungsten bent rake. I know there's some sort of liquid you can use to sharpen tungsten, but I don't have that. Drew Fritts (I think it's in his book) talks about grinding it. I think he also talks about bending it (although I could be dreaming about that one.) In one of Kervin's books, there are pictures of the tweezers Akihiro Ohkama uses, which are regular tweezers with tungsten tips. They look great.

I seem to remember hearing that the liquid for sharpening tungsten is some sorta acid?? Maybe im wrong, but it seems to ring a bell. Ne one know 4sure?
The tupperware is awsome. Just make sure you get the flexible kind not the rigid ones or itll be brittle. I drill holes in the lid and box and secure it with zapstraps. Works like a charm......... If your shipping something really valuable do a box inside a box with foam in between. Itlll be bulletproof.

I didn't realize that they made tupperware stuff so big. You mean sort of like those rubbermaid storage containers that you can buy at Target?
Eric

2006-04-14, 8:02am
Thats exactly what i mean. You gotta get the blue soft rubber one though, and they should have all differnt sizes from like 1L up to 150L. So to "bullet proof" it youd put say a 5L box into a 10L box, that should give enough room for about 1" of foam between the boxes all the way around.(all measurments are hypothetical) Then zap the hell outta the top.

Hey Carrie I had no idea who you where talking to me in the bathroom.....lol, I went ahead and did a search on your name, but I just found out you are miss butterfly!!! I am such a blonde sometimes..*sigh*
Anyway the boro beads are soooo cool to make! I just got lori robbins cookbook and I almost tore it up while opening the envelope, I wanted that book so bad!.
Another question if you don't mind, you placed me last on the list, are you the last person to receive the box after I have received it?
and what's with the northstar Jade? I have a rod here, is it something special??if so, I'll keep it:D , no just kidding, I'll toss it in the box;)
jade is alright on the surface of just about anything, but deeply encase it and.......BOOM...cracks and splodies!!
Yep. Jade is pretty frustrating sometimes. It looks nice, but it's finicky. Like baylie said, just don't encase it.
Actually, I've had good results with the Jade I've used so far. I've made a few beads with it, including encased, and haven't had a problem so far. It's a bit tricky to work with because it needs to be heated more slowly, but once it's hot or covered with clear it's fine.
I heard somewhere that the problems with the color have been pretty much fixed.

When I say deep encasing, I mean DEEP encasing, such as 3 inch vortex marbs. If you can encase jade in that enviroment with out issues I bow to you. The new jade sucks as much or more than the old stuff. Most of the colors that NS makes have backslid in quality over the last two years, in my opinion. When I started out their color was consistant, now I never now batch to batch if it will be the same color.
Thanks for the info Baylie. Yes, I understand my encasing doesn't compare, since my beads are very small compared to the work you're doing. I didn't realize the NS quality had gone down. And the day I can make ANY successful vortex marble, much less a 3" one, I'll certainly take your advice about the Jade! I don't like it all THAT much.
I have had a little luck with Jade (about 50% success) in things like beads. But I used to use it as leaves on my flower marbles, and every one broke. I never could figure out what I was doing wrong, but come to find out it was the color that was to blame. Now I use Precision Green Tea and don't have any problem at all.

The rods I have are probably a year old. I've heard they changed it, but I don't know when the change took place, and I'm not brave enough to spend more money on it and possibly have the same result.

thanks for the info on the Jade.... I'll toss it in the box:D, for those who are daring enough to try it, I am not a green person anyway.

I particularly like the one on the right. It reminds me of a Josh Simpson marble I have (which isn't boro):

Don't get me wrong, jade can be used in some apps. Just not by me or in my shop. why risk losing a piece cause the color 'might' work, when there are pleanty of colors that DO WORK? maybe it is just me..........

It DOES work......its the new recipe. Ive had No problems with it at all. Ill make a bunch more jars tonight with it.

try makin somthing BIG and THICK? That jar was pretty small and not lookin too thick. New recipe be damned, I've got to see it actually work in a large piece. As I said it may work in some apps, just not in anything I make. I don't usually do lil' frit jars, I make big stuff with welds and multiple garagings. It doesn't work in my apps so I don't use it.
So boroburner how long you been in the glass game?

I made more boro beads last night, I used up my little rod of blue moon and the beads came out really pretty!
I am off to go clean them and get pics, I will post them later today.
I want in on the next boro box for sure!!!!!!!!

Cracks, checks, explodes as i said eariler, it does not work. If it works for you on the outside, more power to ya. I still have yet to see it work well inside anything. I have seen a piece(hollow vessel)made by one of the best glass blowers i have had the luck to work with spontainously crack months after it was annealed properly. It was on the outside. I would not want to sell a piece that could crack or check later.

Valerie - glad you could use the marble mold! I set it on fire (the handle) with a flying hot marble (punty problems) so I ordered an infinite rim mold. Then I realized I could switch the burnt handle with a tool I never use. Then I realized I would never use the marble mold now that I have the infinite rim mold. Hoped somebody could.
The SMALLER of the two molds was put in by yours truley. they are pretty much the same, I just put in a smaller version.

If it's wrong, let us know.
baylie took out:
Momka Caribbean Coral
Momka Autumn Swirl
Momka Christmas
Momka Amethyst Ice
NS Blue Moon
NS Mystery
NS Pomegranate
NS Hyacinth
NS DAP
NS Yellow
NS Periwinkle
NS Canary
NS Lava
NS Striking Orange
GA Chameleon
GA Peacock Chameleon
½ stick Disco
2 Green Glasstronix
2 Purple Glasstronix
25.4mm Heavy Weight Tubing – 1 piece
19.5 mm Heavy Weight Tubing – 3 pieces
10mm rod – 2 pieces
Silver Foil – entire book
4 millie chips
NS Yellow Frit
NS DAP frit
GA Indigo Luster Frit
NS Mystery Frit
A “handful” of each gunmount color: White, Tan, Pink, Green, and Off white.
3 opals
Gold - entire book
baylie put in:
Momka Black Rose – ½ stick. (I think this was ½ of a sample set short rod)
NS Bubblegum - 1 stick
NS Jade - 1 stick
NS Avocado - 1 stick
NS Forest Green - 1 stick
NS Transparent Green - 1 stick
3 pieces boro Latticino
9 pieces disco remix
2 pieces color from drill mixing tutorial
12 grams of Millie Chips
Borostix White - 24 pieces
Borostix Grape - 54 pieces
Small Graphite bead/marble mold
1 tiny piece Moldavite
1 large Pendant
1 Mushroom Pendant
1 small marble
36 Mandrel Beads (2 broke during shipping)
1 Piece Graphite Rod
25 grams pre-mixed frit
Also I am wondering who cut rods in 1/2 and took part out and left the other?
I think you read it wrong I put in over 20 stix of boro stix white and over 50 stix of their purple. I also put in a mold and a big mess of frit. And what about the pile of millies I made myself.
I did not have my camera when I was packing the box and i guess That IS my fault. I believe I put in way more in $$$ wise and Those beads were thrown in as a gift to all of you. Sorry I suck so bad. If you count stick by stick what I took out and put in you'll see I was fair. I hope whoever gets the colors I sweat to make and share like them. I won't bother you asking for pics.... Didn't realize I had been such a burden
I just notice that you said I took a book of gold!! NO, I took a 2 inch piece of gold wire.
Looking over what Baylie put in, it looks like the dollar value of what he put in is quite a bit greater than the dollar value of what he took out. The variety is less because he put in greater quatities of single colors, but how does that hurt anyone? It just means that more people will get to try the Disco and the Grape and White Borostix. And nice handmade boro millies are pretty valuable to those who use them.
MsBaylie
2006-05-06, 9:38pm
So I would like to put my two cents in. (I had to start a new account, because for some reason my other account didn't work?)
I'm the one who wrote the original list of items that Baylie took out/put in, and I saw firsthand what the sizes of the various items were, etc. Now lets look over the list to compare...
Took out- 904g (approx) of color rod (including the gunmount colors)
Put in- 801g (approx) of color rod (including borostix)
Took out- 40g of various frit
Put in- 25g of pre-mixed frit
Took out- 4 sm millie chips (approx a gram)
Put in- 12 grams millie chips
Took out- 3 Small opals
Put in- 1 "Small" piece of moldavite (which was substantially larger than the three opals put together if I recall....)
(and I do recall quite clearly)
Took out- one small (2-3 inches long of very fine gauge) piece of gold wire
Put in- 15g latticino
a small graphite marble mold
a piece of graphite rod
and a number of beads and pendants as gifts to the people further down the line So, sorry if any of them broke, but I did list them as gifts and my Mamma always taught me it was rude to criticize a gift...
And as for "who put in the half rods" wouldn't know... maybe you should look over the previous posts.
I'm going to stop now, before I start ranting incoherently....

Msbaylie,
I am sorry, but I've received some really sad 'gifts' in my time. If someone is giving me something, is it out of love or just to give a gift? There is a difference and it is apparent immediately.
I haven't personally 'seen' what is in the BoroBox since it left my house, but I did read in one of baylie's posts that he put beads in with bead release, because he didn't know how to clean it out. Is this right?
I really don't appreciate your smartass comment of "maybe you should look over the previous posts"
I asked 'who cut the rods in 1/2?'? took 1/2 and left the other, that's it. If I knew I wouldn't have asked. If it wasn't you, then why should you care?
Once again, if y'all had posted what you put in and what you took out in the first place, who knows, maybe there wouldn't be all the hooplah now.
Just my 2 cents.........

Baylie, I never said you "suck so bad", nor that you've been a "burden"...
Please everyone, let's not get melodramatic....
Personally, the thing that peeved me the most was taking away other people's choices (or rather limiting them). To have traded 25 colors for 7 just does not seem right....of course, that's coming from a true addict, and variety IS the spice of life.
I have to agree with Carrie though, if you would have just simply followed the "rules" all along, we could have avoided these issues.
Here's hoping our box will move along happily from here on...

UNBELIEVABLE!!! ](*,)
Kalera, Thank you for pointing out that what I put in was as valuable if not more so than what I took out. I can't understand how everyone can be so angry without even SEEING THE CONTENTS OF THE BOX. And ragging on me for leaving bead release in the GIFTS I included? I am not a bead maker. I am a GLASSBLOWER.I thought someone might point me towards a tip on how to clean them in the future. Those were the bulk of ALL the beads I have made. Ever. Sorry if you didn't like them. Oh, wait the person complaining has not even seen a single thing she is complaining about!
I am throwing out my release and mandrels, because when I see them all I will be able to think about is how much I am despised over an attempt to join the ranks of you 'beadmakers'. Damn
