Off Mandrel Star??

I've had a request for a star pendant. I'd like to make it of boro and off mandrel with a loop for stringing. I've tried a couple of different processes, to no avail. For the most part, they come out looking like flowers. Pretty, but not what I'm looking for.
Does anyone out there make off mandrel stars? Care to share your technique??

My daughter just asked me to make her one the other day... I'll have to work on it, but it doesn't seem too hard... yeah right, until you get into the middle of it that is- LOL

OK. Me, too. We can sort of make it a personal challenge. I won't look back here until I get something, and I'll post a pic with info on how I did it. It will be interesting to see what we come up with indepenantly.

OK, I've given it another try and came up with something presentable.
Brent, I totally ripped off your heart tech and modified it to make my stars.
The purple one is my first attempt. The pink one with the little flower thingy in the middle is my second try.
Let's see what you came up with....
