Need help!

Hey everybody,

My brother wants me to make him a shift knob for his car. What im wondering is how to get the nut into the knob. Right now I've attached the nut to a metal rod, but when i tried to wrap the glass around it. it will not stick to the nut. Perhaps because the nut is not round, and has the typical ridges for a socket. Also i tried this both with/without bead release. I was think of using tubing and flaring it out, then inserting the nut, and then compressing the glass back down around the nut. I have heard about a round nut that has nuerals(teeth?) that might work better, i'll hit up the ACE these week and try and find some. So, if anyone has any ideas/suggestions please throw them my way, thanks!

Make the knob on a mandrel with release a little larger than the nut, then epoxy the nut in the hole

Are you sure the nut is hot enough? It sounds to me like the glass is not sticking because the nut is not warm enough. Can't think of any other reason why hot glass would not stick to steel... it is steel, right?

Meker- I thought about this, however since the nut is hexagon shaped, i feel like it would still have trouble fitting/lining up correctly. I'm not sure though.

Jo- As far as i know its stainless steel, but thats from my brother so it could be wrong. And both times i tried it, i let it garage in the kiln for awhile!!!!

I doubt that you are going to find a knurled nut that is large enough for a shifter.
It sounds like you are not getting the nut hot enough.
