I made this bead in a class, it was a soft glass class but I wanted to make a boro bead and the instructor had a bit of boro...
I cannot remember what the rod looked like.
It is a really subtle Blue/Grey, I LOVE the color but I have no idea what it is....
Can you guys help???

wish I could help...? From the description it sounds like blue moon, but it looks like.....portland grey?
It doesn't look like Blue Moon at all. I don't have any Portland Grey so I don't know what it looks like. Is that an amber cast around the edges?

Maybe...... amazon night? But that is just a guess.

Like I said "from the description it sounds like blue moon" I agree it looks nothing like blue moon. In the photo I see no blues only an even grey, maybe it is the photo? amazon night is as good a guess as i could come up with, I always wind up with a little more striations in amazon night though..
Nicole, you should try posting it on theGLDG.com forum... those guys will know!

I figured it out!!!!!!!!!!
(Only because I was playing around last night and made another bead just like the one pictured)
It is NS-89 Nile, in rod form it is brown...
It is from a sample pack I got at the Gathering two years ago.
WOW I really love this glass, I need more!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for trying to figure it out

Nile is fun stuff.. try to reduce it or oxidize it for different effects. If I remember correctly Mixing it with clear and not really mixing it all the way in makes for cool effects. glad you figured it out! Have you tried blu moon? It is the bomb!!

So, what's the trick to NS Nile. I made a heart with an oxidizing flame, and it just looks like the original rod - kind of brown and bleah.

Here is the bead I made last night with the Nile

I have no idea what the trick is since I really know nothing about boro.
I am using a Barracuda with two concentrators, I keep my flame a bit more oxygenated.
My kiln is set to garage at 1050, then when I run the program it ramps slowly up to 1150, sits there for an hour then slowly ramps down...
I can't remember where I got the info on the annealing schedule :-k

never woulda guessed Nile. This is the only piece ive ever made with nile. Its about 3.5"acoss and maybe that tall un-encased. Made it last yr at Red Deer. Its a proto type to go with the R2 on a theme piece. Ive got yoda too.
Maybe you reduce it to draw out silver/chrome? Would that be whats giving the light blue? Or maybe casing it did that?

I agree, I don't think I'll be going back to soft any time soon, if ever, but never say never!
Hard all the way! 8)

Baylie - I should have been more clear. I'm not sure how I would describe Blue Moon since it can look so different depending on how it's worked, but I was agreeing with you that it didn't look like blue moon. Then you agreed with me so I guess we agree!!:waving:
Oh, forgot to add (actually hit post button rather than preview) - I've never worked with Nile, but can definitely recommend Blue Moon.

thanks..
Im curious what the differance is, between the two pieces? Is it simply cause you cased it? maybe a differnt batch? Pre-working the rod was a little lighter in color and had streaks in it if i remember right. After putting it in the flame the color evened out, and just went kinda brownish.
