Has anybody tried using palladium leaf with boro, or fuming with either palladium or platinum?

Thanks,

Eric

Not worth the expense from what I've heard. The leaf may be cool under clear, but I haven't heard of a good fuming experience yet. ;)

I remember someone (maybe John Winter) talking about fuming with palladium. He said it just turned brown and nasty.

I've heard the same sort of thing... the price of platinum isn't going to make me run out and try that one either.

Well, I tried out the palladium leaf. The following pictures are some crappy hearts I made up quickly out of some scrap so I could try out the palladium. The one on the far left has the palladium on the surface and ended up with a dull pewter/lead look to it. :-( I may try to polish it up a bit with my flexshaft and see what it looks like then. The heart in the middle has both encased and surface palladium leaf, and the one on the far right is encased with Ruby K on the back side, and clear on the front. This one may have potential for other applications. I will add however, that working with the leaf is a big pain since it blows around too easily or gets stuck to the marver and won't come loose when you need it. So, I can see where it might work great for some applications, but you might be able to get the same effect using dichro. Plus, at $50 a pack, a 3" x 3" sheet costs $2 so it is not something I can afford to waste.

Oh, and I did try and fume with it as well....UGLY.

Ok, just so you know I have never melted a bit of boro yet even't though it's sitting there and taunting me so take this with a grain of salt. Try layering different transparents over the palladium, it makes a really nice alternative to dichro with out fighting the scum. And it always trurns out that pewter type tone for me but, depending on the flame type sometimes I get a green to purple cast to it when it's on the surface.
