this may be a stupid question, but can i use 96coe raku in a mostly 104 cane?
i'm wanting to make some murrini, but don't have too much silver colors in 104. but i do have a bunch of 96 raku.
i know about the 5% rule, but does that apply to a cane? when i use the murrini i know i'll be below the 5%, but the cane will be more like 30% raku, 70% 104.

Yes, you can use Raku with 104.

i know i can mix the two sparingly...but what i'm asking is if a cane is made to be 50/50 104 and 96 raku will it crack after i pull it?

I know. The answer yes you can make cane mixing 104 & 96. I've done it for years (and so have many others). I wouldn't do a 50/50 mix, though. Pick one for the base and stripe with the other.

All you can say is that there WILL certainly be residual stress after annealing. I wouldnt mix period.

If you want to be safe, use the 104 COE raku. Not the 96 COE.

thanks for all the help. i'll stick to just stripes with raku on my 104 murrini.

another question....do most of you anneal your murrini cane after you pull it down?

I don't anneal the cane, it's usually less than 1/4" round, sometimes a bit more. I just cool and nip it.

Use a base of 104. Make a gather, encase it with your 96 Raku. Stripe as desired. Pull and nip. Raku has a lot of silver in it and you should be fine with this method.

I don't anneal mine, either. Just cool and nip.
