What's the difference between the new Vetrofond Transparent Browns and the regular Amber/Topaz colors? From the photos I've seen, other than the Dk. Brown Trans, they look pretty much the same (Light Brown looks like Dark Topaz). Are they reactive? I'd hate to spend $15-20lb on colors that I can already get for less.
I've got some of both in the studio, Nette, I'll go have a look and get a pic for ya.
Ok, here's the scoop.
The Light Streaky (V791980) is approximately the same shade as Dark Topaz (V791014). The Medium Streaky is a shade darker than that, and the Dark Streaky a shade darker still. Here's a pic... Topaz is the rod off to the side.

Hope this helps...

I was hoping that the red undertone (overtone?) wouldn't be prevalent...poo...I want that smoky topaz color that czech has in moretti or vetrofond, cause the czech sure doesn't like to encase moretti AT ALL!
Yeah, Chris, it's definitely in the "red brown" category. Sorry, I'd love to see a smokey topaz, too!

Thanks T!
The Dark Brown (reg, not streaky) that I saw didn't look red, but it's hard to tell from pics. Can anyone verify this? Also, are the colors reactive? (014 is actually Medium Topaz, so I guess it's nice to have a couple more darker alternatives)

I got some of the light VF brown and it is much, much darker than I expected. Not what I had hoped for. Shawnette, pm me your address and I'll send you a little to try.
I have some of each. I haven't melted them yet, but they don't look like topaz to me. They look less red. They are all dark.

They look less red to me, too, although I only have the Dark Streaky and the medium.

Thanks! Anybody want to trade what they don't like?
I have the light, medium and dark, and the light seems to be the darkest one of them all because it gets dark streaks when you melt it. I have used it for stringers, even little bumpy dots are streaky! I believe the light and dark both streak, but the medium doesn't. They are definitely cooler browns, less yellow/more truly brown than the regular production topaz from Effetre and Vetrofond both. I LOVE them. They remind me of soy sauce. In fact, I used the dark brown in the beads in my Wasabi Jones (http://cgi.ebay.com/ZB-Wasabi-Jones-9-lampwork_W0QQitemZ270000309801QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3 4070QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) auction this week. (sorry, I still haven't figured out how to effectively use the image uploader thingee, so a link will have to do).
Sarah :)
I used the light brown as a base for a floral and it is a nice deep brown without red tones. I tried the darkest over ivory as a flower petal and it is definitely brown without red. But it isn't on the gray side like smokey topaz. I saw streaks in the light when I heated it up but as a base bead the streaks didn't show up and I didn't get streaks for the dark as a petal. I did not try the medium yet.
Btw, when I said "in the red brown" category, I meant that it wasn't the smokey color Chris wanted. In other words, it's not a "grey brown," it's a "red brown." Just wanted to clear that up.

I just got some of the regular dark brown, and it's very close to the color I have handmixed for the last couple of years - very brown - not much red at all. I can't wait to try it!
