View Full Interactive Version Of This Page : Dichroic Frit
I'm looking for examples of work made using dichroic frit. Got pics? Let's see 'em!

Where do you buy dichro frit ???
Oooooo..what a concept. I have never seen any, but now that you mention it maybe I will make some and try it.
This is from the CBS site:
7/18/04 96 FRIT NOW AVAILABLE
In addition to our complete line of 90 COE Frit, Coatings By Sandberg now offers its full pallet of colors on 96 COE Frit (Available on clear or black glass). Each 2 oz. Tube of Uroboros Coarse Frit is available for $25 Dollars. After extensive research CBS has designed a proprietary process that allows the frit to be coated on approximately 80 Percent of the surface area of the glass. The ratio of glass to Dichroic Coating is unmatched by any other product available on the market today. Due to this high ratio of Coating versus Glass, the Dichroic Frit responds very differently under heating/hotworking conditions,… a must try for artists looking for a fresh and different look to their work.
I saw that a couple of days ago, too, Tink - I have it on my "wish list" for trying out soon. I'm guessing the 96 COE should be soft glass compatible in the normal frit amounts?

The dichro frit comes in relatively big chunks (several mm in size) and looks to me like sheets of glass that were broken into small pieces. It would probably not be that useable with incompatible COE glass.

Crud, I have a few pix but they're old from when I was using a scanner and the detailing sucks. I've made my own frit in the past.....just heating up ends of dichro strips on the glass side and dropping them into a small jar of water. They'll shatter pretty easily. I apply it the same way I apply other frit. The one BIG loophole is that you can't get the bead in the flame until all of the dichro is encased, so you need to be good at sheet encasing or willing to do an old-fashined sloppy "dab" encasing. Once it's covered you can heat it, but if you show ANY bit of dichro the flame, it will try it's best to scum on you. You can get some very cool effects, though.
This frit is coated after it's chunked up, so it has a lot more coating than if it were just fritted up dichro.
Still hoping to see some pics of finished work...
I have seen examples of fused work using it. I would imagine in a lampworking setting, the coating wouldn't last long as it would be exposed to flame quite a bit. But, like you, I'd like to see some examples...

Wow, that would be tough to use in the flame on 104.

Oooooo! coated after chunking.....very intriquing. If I were better off financially right now I'd run right over to CBS.

Hi Tink,
I have had the 90coe version of the CBS frit for some time.
I will make a bead tomorrow with it and post it. Is there any particular technique that you want to see?
Vicki
Thanks, Vicki! Actually, I'm just hoping to see it used in any way at all. I plan to try fusing with it, if I end up getting any. But I'd like to see it used at the torch, as well...

I haven't used the frit, but I've seen it. The chunks range from approximately 5mm - 7mm. You could use them in the flame if you heated a big blob of transparent and mushed it down onto a piece of frit. You'd then have to carefully melt the glass over and around the chunk while trying to keep bubbles from forming between the chunk and the encasement. Then you have to try not to pull it too thin or you lose the effect of the dichro.
Here's some dichro frit photos.

And last, but not least (and my favorite)

Hey Tink,
Here are a couple of pictures of a quick bead made with a white base, clear encasing and CBS Dichroic Coated Frit 90 COE, "cyan/dark dark red" (this frit is coated after it's chunked up) with a white stringer in the clear to help the dichro pop.
I made this one using the center flame of my Barracuda, but it is really easier to work this frit using a smaller torch or a hothead and a bushy small reducing flame.
I seem to have trouble sizing pictures when I post, so they may be huge, but you can get an idea.
Vicki
Thanks, you guys! I really need to get some of this stuff I think!
