I am in need of a better system and would like some ideas for my carpenter hubby! If you don't mind sharing, I'd sure appreciate it.

I hope this image comes through okay as this is the first one I am posting.
I bought this unit at Lowes. There are 25 cubes. I added dividers in each cube so that I now have 100 areas to store rods. The unit was $45 and some odd change. I am sure your husband could build something for less using MDF.

Hi Suzy--My dream is someone's glass wall I saw long ago on WC. They had a whole wall devoted to the glass, and sort of long, shallow bins (maybe 5" tall, 2" deep) with dividers every couple of inches. Then there was another "guard rail" (or at least there is one in my memory) a few inches up. The bins were the width of the wall, and the vertical distance between them was probably 18" or so. I thought it was so neat that the glass was all visible, and also vertical.--Gail

I think mine is in the thread linked above. But, since I just love it, I'll add it here. Rich has something similar and has a thread in the techniques section.

I have a picture of the unit lit from behind here:http://www.baublesbynancy.com/crop.jpg

No clue why my pictures won't appear as small as I planned. #-o

Not much help for your carpenter hubby, but I like mine. ;) I saw several similar to the one posted built into cupboards closets or into walls. One was even over the workbench in what I would say was a soffit type space. Good luck.

If you'd ever come to Memphis, I'd show you mine in person. And remember, my set up is sooooo good that a Chinese bead company stole my images and claimed it was their studio.

I have some pictures of my studio posted on my website. I really like how simple and easy this set up was to do. My husband made the glass storage for me with basic sheet lumber and PVC pipes cut to 12" lengths. They are not even glued, just stacked in the shelf. There is lots of room to grow if I need it and there is even room for shelving if I want. These pics were taken right after he put this on my worktable, so it is VERY clean. I used about 10 pieces of 2" PVC pipe that were 7.00 each and the wood was recycled.

Good Luck finding something that works for you

Here are some photos of my studio...

My hubby cut PVC pipe.. Glued them together and then I felt a little uncomfortable with just that, so I duct taped the hell out of them around the outside.. I don't think a bomb would break it..

I got these large blue metal bins on Ebay . . . If you're interested, I'll research my purchases to find out where I got them!

This is my cabinet. I saw cabinets similar to this in Pottery Barn and then built this myself. It is two sided so I have all Moretti on one side and the other side is Boro and some Lauscha and, as you can see, a junk collector. I stuck the little racks on the side to hold frits and enamels and stuff. I put the whole thing on casters so I can roll it around and get it out of the way or pull it in close when I'm working. It's about 5 ft. tall so it's pretty heavy. If I had it to do over I'd have put bigger casters on it, but other than that I love it! Plus I loved getting a chance to use my power tools!!

You're welcome Gail. I need to find something to lift mine off the ground a bit. I'll have to take a new pic. My glass storage has expanded.

This is just a cheap book shelf from Lowe's or Menard's. The dividers are pieces of fencing from Lowe's cut to 12 inches. Works great. I have my frits sitting on the top of it.

I use the fencing from lowe's also. Mine are stacked up to the ceiling on top of my steel table. You would not believe how strong the fence rail is. No sags at all from the pounds of glass!

DH wonders if there's any interest in the fence rails. He'd be happy to buy, cut and clean and ship them (for a small fee) If anyone's interested, PM me and we'll work up the price. He can cut them to 12" or 18" lengths.

OK...so I must just be totally blind....

I need to find the fence rail stuff. Does anyone have a product SKU so I can go to Lowes and find the stuff? What does it actually look like as a while piece before you cut it up?

Thanks!

Here's the only pic I could find that shows it before it's cut up. They just have it at the Lowe's here in Omaha but on the threads about the fencing on WC some people couldn't get it at theirs. Some people found it at Home Depot or special fencing places. You might be able to talk to fencing company about getting their scraps from them.

I couldn't find the fencing railing at Lowes or H.D here in my area. So I used the plastic pvc down spout over in the rain gutter section.
Cut it with chop saw or table saw.Works perfect.

Where do you get the dividers? I have this, but now my glass selection is growing I'd love the dividers!

Here's a link to the square tubes. They come in 24" pieces, so you have to cut them in 1/2. I only use 3 per cubby.

This is great! It has inspired me to figure out a way not to have all of my glass laid out on a table (please don't laugh at me). Whoever introduced the white fencing... thanks! It looks perfect =)

My Lowe's didn't carry the fence railing in stock. If your's doesn't either, they will gladly order it for you!

Here is a close up of my glass storage, then a couple pics of the studio layout as it is currently. The area underneath will have a door so I can keep all my books, boxes, etc neatly.

This photo shows most of my work space. What you don't see off to the left is that large enclosed cabinet in it's entirety. When the lft hand door opens, a table drops down and I can place my laptop to my left just left of the kiln!
