I bought some iris GOLD to make the faux boro beads. They are not working too well for me. I have this bag of iris orange frit, and I don't want to waste it. Any suggestions for good creative usage of this frit?

Edited- I accidentally thought "iris orange," but it is iris gold- clear looking with some gold, yellow and light orange.
Thanks a lot!

Are you sure you have iris orange? Sounds like you may be using the wrong glass- iris orange is also called raku- and can make great colors, but i don't know if it can faux boro. Iris yellow and gold can make some great faux boro.

If you run a search on raku that may help you get some fun colors!

R-108 Iris Orange (also known as Raku) can give some great colors. See Dawn's thread for some great ideas: http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20601

I must learn to read posts better~
you already tried the boro beads!
Maybe use them as reduction stringers--the Iris Gold is really a nice gold and with some timing, you can get some pinks and greens in the gold shine:grin:

Wow I had great results with the Iris gold I used to make faux boro beads. Want to trade it?

any of the iris that I've managed to get my hand on work for the faux boro! I'm just trying to figure out other glass than just the straw yellow and trans brown for mixing it with...

Poop~ Then maybe I will try harder to use it. Would it work better if I use a layer of silver burnished on the base bead first??? Hmmm... I will simply have to test it out. If I land on something that works wonderful in my mad scientist labratory (AKA my studio) I will then order MORE iris gold. I bought it from...
jodelglass.com, and it was very reasonably priced. So- why not buy more?

A question then, about your faux boro- I use a hothead- do you think this makes a difference because of the fuel? I love my little hothead with propelyne (I do use a bulk tank so I have a decent amount of heat and power) but maybe I am not getting great colors because it is not a oxy/propane mix? I am ready for a dual fuel torch. My DH is going to fix a portion of the garage for my studio- he is a HVAC guy- so he is going to speak with the people who own the glass studio I frequent to set up my ventilation and torch. Now I just have to decide what kind of torch I want! Luckily I can practice at the studio- she has minors, and a new torch- but I can not remember the name- to see if I like either of those. I like them both, though! I like my HH- but I don't like that I can not control the flame to pinpoint an area.

Anyway- I babble. If you have hints for me for the faux boro- I would dearly appreciate it. I am using straw yellow and that brown- both of the recommended colors for pulling the stringer.

Thanks!

I'm using several iris frits for making the faux boro. I've got two sets on ebay at the moment.

I think those are the easiest cool looking beads I've ever made, LOL.

I do make twisties with most of my iris frits, on the straw yellow and the trans brown. Half the time, I put a couple of stripes of the yellow on the brown, then start dipping the combo in the frit, 2 or 3 times, then melt it all in and twist and pull.

Put on a dark transparent base (I haven't played with it much on anything else, and can't see any real variations between them), melt in, and encase!

I get a lot of blues, yellows, ambers, and greens from it. No purples.

Edited to add: I haven't tried this on anything other than a minor, though, with tanked 02. I can't give advice for it with a HH.

I'm on a HH too. I've used it on/under lite trans purples and blues and Lt trans brown. I make a base bead of a trans color but on the stringet I made from the frit and encase it with another trans color. I've had great results.

I LOVE iris gold. Not only can you get that beautiful streaky multi-colored effect over trans. brown, but it also reduces beautifully to make raised gold dots.

If you burn the heck out of iris gold it will turn into this ghostly green thing which has that glowy boro look. Reduce it and then just cook it too long. Very cool.

I'll have to try that one Kevan. Sounds like a fun new way to try this out. I may never get away from iris gold frit. It's becoming a staple.

Iris gold frit on either copper green or red copper green creates a very "organic" look. If you use Bullseye, try it on either Sugar Daddy or Cinnabar (both are odd lots) for some really cool reactions. I'll try and post some pix tomorrow if the sun is out.

Oh, you have to try buying the canes or stinger. It's so much easier. I got some of the Kugler iris gold and it really makes some metallic dots. I thought they would be gold and they came out like this.
