First off I want to acknowledge, that I did not discover the star bead, and didn't figure it out on my own. It was thanks to another tutorial that I can now make mine.

I have to sadly announce that I cannot put my pictures anywhere to keep them up for free anymore.

I am terribly sorry.

Great pictures Sarah! Now I have got to try this. Thanks for a great tutorial.

Thank you! And please post your results good and bad here!

And if you have any other questions, Please post them here too :D

I just wish I could have shown more of the 'technique' than what I did, but i would need to have grown two extra arms to do that... ;)

Sarah,

That was a really fantastic tutorial. I love your use of pictures. I know the one thing that really helped me was your advice to flatten the dots. My arms used to go all wonky, now they stay right where I put 'em. Couldn't have done it without you!

I tried the star. You are good. Two of the arms decided to go flying off into space. [-X Ugh! That is a little more difficult than I thought. So I did it is white and black just to practice. Will go ahead and try again. Just about got the arms pulled on one side. Ha was I fooled. You are sooooo good. Ha! That is one of the things that I will work one. Good tutortial. Hard to do. :tigger:

Oh I'm sorry Rose. I have only had a few stars lose arms, but that is after I'm completely done and then while cleaning. Just remember to keep the whole bead warm, turning in the flame, flashing in the flame, never keeping it still aside from when applying dots, flattening, and raking. Keep that beadie warm!

Sarah, thanks for posting this. I tried these yesterday. The first one seemed really wonky when I was making it, but it didn't turn out bad at all. I decided to make a bigger one, but when it got time to do the raking, I chickened out. This was a bad decision, I think it look like a Christmas Stocking, with all the stripes and all. But it's BIG.

Genea - nah... the longest time it took me to make one was an hour! and I work on a HH! I love my HH!

Rose - awesome first stars! Don't chicken out next time! :D

Lynn - VERY nice stars! You are moving along really fast! I'll take a pic of one of my newest BIG ones in my hand for you all. ;)

FiredDesires - I learned the star bead from another tutorial on another site as well. But I came here and was asked to make one to help promote the site, and so I did. I took all the pics myself as I was making the bead(s). This is one thing I don't take credit for, there are also pictures and directions in Cindy Jenkins' books about making star beads. :D And there are SEVERAL people who make star beads before me! I just wanted to help my fellow beadmakers anyway I could!

Hi! I'm new to this forum and have been making beads for about a year. I love these stars! What I've been wondering is how you use them in jewelry. If you thread it horizontally, you don't see the pretty star. Does anyone have any photos of how they've strung these star beads? Thanks!

When I hang them in jewelry, I use hang them flat against the neck/chest by using wire, cord or seedbeads to create a pendant hanger.

well, I'm a newbie.... and here's my story... I don' have a pic to post yet... the "thing" is still in the kiln at the studio I go to... I promise to post it so everyone can have a good laugh.... here was my idea.

I "thought" - herein lies the problem -- that I could take this tutorial make it big enough to be a Christmas ornament... so today I went to the studio to try my idea. the first one wasn't so bad, it was smaller, just a biggish bead size, way wonky but a good start.... THE SECOND ONE.... well let's just say 45 minutes later, and 4 rods of glass.... the thing was huge, wonky, as big as my head and weighed as much as my first child!

I'll pick it up friday and thus post my first pic... I hope it makes you laugh as much as it did everyone at the studio...

Great tutorial, thank you so much, I can only hope to be a good enough beader to one day do it justice...
Happy thanksgiving.

Very nice starter stars!
The only thing that I would suggest, would be to try a little less heat and to space your arms a bit more evenly. :D Other than that you are on your way to be a great star maker.

Step 14
Finally, you have to be very careful with you heat control now, otherwise you just melt everything into each other and lose the points into the arms of the star. You carefully melt in the transparent so you can see the bubble.

Arlene,
You are a DOLL!
There were a few people asking me if I could do it, and since I had no clue I had been struggling! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a copy of the word document. :D
I could then add a link to my website for it :D

I think everyone has done amazingly with their stars!

And trust me... my first star looked NOTHING like my stars now.
In fact I got so frustrated with the arms that I went and squashed them and made it into a flower bead, which then later went on to crack cause it was too fragile. :P

So don't dispair!

Kristina - your stars are scrumptious!

I really do applaud each and everyone of you for at least trying the stars (even the ones who didn't show their attempts). I wrote the tutorial to help people take that step to try something different and out of their normal playtime regime!

Kristina

OMG, sorry about the late-ish post, but I honestly couldn't help myself. Those are so wonderful! I've tried making a star before, but I never thought about flattening the dots in order to keep everything under control. Neat! I'm so inspired, I think I'm going to go bug my aunt to go out to my studio with me. My dad won't let me use the torch without adult supervision.... Ahh well, I'll give them a shot! :-D Fantastic everybody!

I hate to admit this, but I've made about 5 stars and none are worth showing, they are absolutely ugly! I'm getting better, but I have problems with the top of the star popping off and it seems like it's just a certain one that wants to pop over and over. Very frustrating! First, my stars were ugly colors, then they were too big and then, too small. One of these days, I will have one just right and I will post the picture. That is, if I ever succeed!

I had been looking for a tutorial on the star for ages and couldnt believe it when I stumbled across this one. I had to try it straight away! Must admit, didnt turn out the way I had hoped. The arms arent straight, I couldnt figure out how to hold the darn thing while I tried to rake. All in all, its PPP for me *sighs* :D
Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful tutorial and sharing it with the public!

I tried one the other night. It turned out okay, except that 2 of the points got a little melted in more than the others. And the blutonium I was using got reduced (having torch/oxycon issues...new oxycons on the way!) so right as I was doing the raking at the end, my flame goes to a reduction flame and the blutonium glass turned into an irridescent rust color. Gorgeous color. Just not what I was going for. And certainly not in splotches!!

Jacinthe,

This is a wonderful tutorial, but I'm trying to find out how to wire them up so they will hang nicely.

Anyone know about a tutorial on how to wire up the stars for use in necklaces, like the one above?

I've got a bunch of pulsar/star beads, but haven't come up with a good way to wire them up that looks nice. I'm trying for a nice pendant that I can incorporate onto sterling chains or into custom necklaces.

Anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks,

DOH!! flatten the dots!! <G> Well, I tried this tut last night and had amazing (for me) success. The arms are even and straight and the tips went on great and none popped off. BUT, I am having trouble raking the points. How hot/soft should the arm be when I rake? How deep should I put my tool into the glass? This is my first star that actually looks like a star. The other attempts got melted into LARGE multicolored donut beads <G> I will try to post a pic Monday.
This tut was great! Thank you so much Sarah

I am new to lampworking and this site. I tried this bead last night and it did not turn out well. I am having trouble getting the bands of color even looking and pieces kept popping off. I have only been lampworking for about 2 weeks so perhaps this is above my skill level at this time but I will keep trying:) I am using a HH torch. I love this site and all the tut's and tips. I really appreciate it. Any advice on keeping the arms straight and the stripes even would be great. Thanks again

Melt slow, slow, slow - and change the direction of rotation - if you keep rotating in the same direction, all the arms will tilt instead of stand up.

Irene. I have to point out to you that this thread was started in June of 05. This is a very old thread. And, I know for a fact, that Sarah had been making these star beads long before she posted a tutorial for them, when we were all on Wet Canvas. Who started the star bead...who knows. There's probably different ways of making one. Just I thought you should know.

Irene,

Sarah did not originate the star bead but she definately perfected it - she was a bright flame as a novice lampworker working on a Hothead torch. I think she has moved on to another art form.

I can attest to the fact that Sarah did indeed make the star beads in her tutorial -I have 5 of her stars roagk-ed me if you would like pics - please don't make accusations when you don't know what you are talking about.

I personally know Sarah and she is as honest is the day is long and as unassuming as she can be -her motives for posting the tutorial were not for fame or glory but to share with others what she had learned.

Reenie
2008-09-02, 3:17pm
All I mentioned was that if your going to use pictures that were not yours...to just cite the name of the person. That was it.
I was seeing these gorgeous star beads that "sarah" made and I was amazed that the pictures were identical to someone else's. Then I found the original tuturial on this and they weren't only identical....they were the same pictures step by step!
That is why I got upset.
Sarah may be a wonderful glass artist and a very lovely person but I still feel the pictures should be cited as not hers.
I'll find the original webpage that has the tuturial on it.
If indeed it was Sarah's old webpage or something...I promise I will apologize for what I posted.
I didn't mean to offend...I was just trying to figure out why her's weren't any different then the other persons, and then was pretty offended myself to find out that the reason was...it wasn't any different!

Reenie
2008-09-02, 4:09pm
First of all, I apologize.
When I read this tuturial (just the other week) I thought it was a new thread because it was right on top. I was corrected of that mistake by someone who posted that this was indeed an old thread.
The tuturial that I saw was on Calderon's Creations? (Melinda's site) a few years back.
That is where I saw it and that's where my pictures came from.
When I saw this thread and saw the exact pictures used...I felt misled by "Sarah" because Sarah is not Melinda and I thought these were Melinda's beads.
I felt that she should have used her own bead pics that she had made.
I can't find that original page. I have written to Melinda and the creator of the "Star" bead just for verification purposes and to put my mind at ease. (Yes this has upset me)
But if these were Sarah's pictures then yes...I am sooo sorry.
I will apologize directly to her and to everyone here now.
I don't normally make assumptions and if you look at my threads...I'm seriously not a troublemaker. I sure didn't mean to hurt anyone and if I did...for that I'm so sorry.
Please forgive me.
I'll start paying attention to thread dates for now on.
Swamper.....I apologize to you as well.

Thanks for the clarification Virginia and Krissa. I found the tuturial years ago as well when I first started out. The same pictures. Why do I think that it was "THIS" same tuturial? I thought this was a new thread and that's why I knew it looked familiar but I dunno. Funny things have happened.

History-wise...this technique goes back to Sage...you will see her work in lampwork books by Cindy Jenkins and Jim Kervin.

If you go back on Wetcanvas you will note that there were a couple of people, myself included (I have one on here, on my site (which was published in 2002), and a summarized version on Wetcanvas), that wrote step by steps for another lampworker that asked, Tricia, and previously for someone else that asked about creating a star bead...
and then Virginia took it a step farther and added her own flare and style to the star beads and shared her viewpoint on how to create a starbead and wrote a tutorial. Sarah came along after and created lots and lots of star beads too then wrote a tutorial for LE.

I have watched both Virginia and Sarah become obsessed with creating beautiful star beads!
I think we need to know that most styles have a history. It is awesome that you asked about it!! :)

Creditwise for this style of bead...from what I have learned in the beadworld these go back to Sage's Stratified Bead Series.

:)

I don't know you Reenie, because I have been gone for a while.
Life has gotten in the way.
But the pictures in this tutorial are MY OWN.
I took them as I made this bead.
I learned to make these beads because of Viriginia, when we were still on Wetcanvas.
She was kind enough then to point out the flatten the dots part to me.
The rest went from there.
It is very well possible that you saw this tutorial linked from another site as well.
I do know that it is linked on a few other sites at least.

I looked at Melinda's site and I know of Melinda's site and that Viriginia wrote that tutorial.
Those beads and my beads don't look at all alike.

I thank you for your apology. I was very upset when I checked into my thread and saw someone accusing me of something I despise.
Stealing someone else's work is one thing I do not agree with. I find it abhorrable. I think it is as low as cheating on your partner.

But we shall move on and I shall forgive you, and life moves on.
And yes I made this tutorial a LONG time ago.
Since I made this tutorial I work on a national 8 and do it less often than I want to.
But that's life... work, kids, and family take a lot out of me lately and leave me little time for fun things like making beads.

I hope everyone can move on from this and remember this was a tutorial posted to help people expand their borders of exploration in the glass bead making art form.

I love all the works of art everyone has been making and posting in this thread to share with everyone.

If you scroll up a few you'll see that I offered you a "complete apology" for my mistake.
I had no idea that this thread was years old and in my mind I had remembered seeing the same beads being made with the same colors and all. I assumed this thread was new and that someone was taking those original beads and giving the tut on their own.
When I figured it out, I apologized.
Since your here now however again I apologize to YOU for my oversight.

I'm sorry that I offended you or assumed anything other that what I should have.

Your bead is beautiful and I've tried to make them....still with no success!
I'm sorry that I offended you or assumed anything other that what I should have.
I hope you can forgive me for the mistake.

I was editting my post when you posted.
Hope you can read it now.

Hugs

All is well and I am fine now, I should follow my own advice before hitting post and read all messages then post.

Thank you for the compliments and if there is anything I can do to help, please feel free to ask.

I don't hold grudges, especially when it was an honest mistake. :D

Thanks so much for this tutorial. Clear, easy to follow and really good photos. I am relative newbie looking for ideas around making Christmas decorations. I made three wobbly-looking stars yesterday and will churn out a few more this afternoon!

Cheers and thanks again.

Hi guys - you are all pursuing lovely stars, and I think that everyone who writes a tutorial adds a little spin or twist that might help one other beadmaker see things a little differently, or overcome a particular challenge.

Sort of before the huge popularity of WC or LE, I recall that Lisa Walsh was the B and B souvenir bead artist with this style of bead and Sage (of Tom and Sage Holland) taught them to me in a class the year that the Gathering was in Oakland in the early 2000's. The point being, that the idea is around, germinates, grows, and benefits from every artist's hand. Isn't that nice? Jeri

Sarah, I'm brand new to flamework and can't wait until I hone me skills to the place where I can try this. Your pics are incredible, descriptions clear and the bead is beautiful. Thank you for the insparation to keep practicing. If I could only get a nice round soft glass bead. lololol

This bead is so beautiful, but I have a question. I don't mean to sound totally ignorant, but how would you mount it to show off the delicate work?

OK, so now all know that I'm in pre-K where flamework is considered. lololol

I've made them on seedbead necklaces, and just put them on leather cords, I bet they would look great on one of those rope necklaces.

Everyone who is working on their stars, I want to compliment you all for your perserverance and in pushing your boundaries. Keep it up!

Jacinthe,
Thank you so much for posting the tutorial. It was absolutely awesome! I looked at your pictures over and over, took notes and then set out to try it on my own. My first one was the blue and white bead. It totally boosted my confidence and I just wanted to thank you for being so generous. Jen :grin:176462

Greetings folks!

This is just a forwarning for anyone who is using this tutorial. The pictures will be unavailable for a short while after my ex's account is totally removed from his old internet provider. He decided to change providers. Luckily i have saved all the pictures and will try and get them uploaded someplace as soon as possible and change the links in the posts about the tutorial.

Thank you sooo much for enjoying this tutorial!

I know this is an old post, but i read the tutorial and looked at some pics and have officially tried my first star bead. I am working with one of those fireworks bead thingys - ugh no worries - true hh is on the way from mountain glass!! so my first star bead only has 4 legs, it took forever! lol I have a friend at work that wanted some of my wonky practice beads in GA bulldog colors...grrrr...this is VOL country... so i decided to make one for her. I am looking forward to how it looks when it is all cooled and stuff. I dont have a kiln yet.. how do you convince friends that they reaaaaallllyy dont want you beads yet? lol she has been told that if they last a week before cracking or breaking we are all lucky. she dosent care. She has such a momma's heart, and i lover her. I will post a pic here as soon as the thing is cooled and cleaned. THANKS FOR THE TUT!!!

Nice job! I tried this too and have only made 3 of them. The first one is the light blue and white pictured in this thread I think. My 2nd one exploded on me so I gathered all the pieces and squished it into a large cube/rectangle and my 3rd one turned out ok. Maybe a bit better than my first one. They are fun to make and oh so pretty (if they aren't to wonky like mine). I'll have to give this another go.

Onebizebee, your beads are very pretty as well. Nice job!!

Greetings fellow star makers,

unfortunately i am unable to get my pictures saved anywhere that wont cost me money to keep them available.

seems my divorce used up my favours from friends.

But on the good side... Patty is fabulous and is going to make the pictures into a pdf file for me and I will list it on etsy along with the goddess tutorial that is up now.

Big hugs and thanks to anyone and everyone who used the tutorial before, I am terribly sorry that I can't keep the pictures up for free anymore. And i just can't afford the costs of a domain right now.

Hugs from Holland,
Sarah

You can always upload your pictures directly into your thread post here on LWE. I don't store my photos anywhere, I just upload them in my profile, then put a link to them in my post. If you would like instructions, I'd be more than happy to PM you. :)

It looks like Melinda did host the tutorial - or at least a tutorial. This one is attributed to Virginia L. not Jacinthe. It is the same bead design though.

Here's the link as of 11/25/2011

http://www.cauldroncreations.com/startutorialpg1.html

There are two pages with several examples on the second page.

Happy Beading!
