I thought we knew what we were doing...now I'm not so sure!

My husband is moving my "studio" to a safer side of the garage. Safer because we can add better ventilation and can move the propane outside. (Finally.)

The propane tank will sit just outside the garage. He's going to use copper pipe and send it through the wall.

Should he use copper for the entire set-up? Or, is the copper necessary only to get through the wall?

Any better ideas? He's called a few welding and gas shops but they don't seem to offer much help.

Secondly, this is how I envision the set-up. Is it safe?...

The propane tank is a BBQ tank. It has a regulator (the psi thingie) attached at the tank. The copper pipe will come through the wall and attach to the hose (how?). The hose attaches to the torch.

Before and after each torching session, I will turn on/off the propane at the tank.

Is that enough? Must there be a shut-off inside the garage when I can easily open the garage door and turn it off at the tank?

Thanks for you help. Sorry to sound so basic. This is Greek to me.

MY personal preference is threaded black iron pipe, but soft copper tubing (not water pipe) is fine if you use flared fittings and leak test everything.... (compression fitting using a Ferral are not reliable).

You can connect regulator on tank to metallic piping with short (propane approved) "rubber hose" or not what ever works for you but a flex hose between tank a piping is a good idea in my mind.....

Inside piping can be a long a need be. You also need to have a shut off valve on end of metal piping (inside), and then on outlet end of shutoff valve you need a "B" fitting... Its threaded for the gas supply hose (left-hand thread) on one end and 1/4 inch pipe thread on other end...

You may need to get a bushing to get "B" fitting to "connect" to inside shut off valve...

See this thread for "bushing" and "B" fitting...

A "B" fitting can be purchased at most better quality welding supply stores.

I second the black iron pipe and a flexible connector to the tank. It's what I used when I tested natural gas equipment.

I think most places these days you have to use teflon pipe dope, not teflon tape.
