I need a definitive answer on this one. I've been through all sorts of threads and it's only confused me more.

I am on a Hot Head and I just got a 20 pound propane tank for it along with a 5 foot hose.

Does it need a regulator?

You don't need a regulator for a hothead.

I've been using mine for a year without a regulator.

Thank You Laurie for asking what, I too needed to know. DH is worried about needing a regulator. I've been told however, that the tank needs to be outside even if you're in the garage like me. Now I need to find out about hard piping...lol

Ah, but here is the rub...

The HH is designed to run without the use of a regulator.

You cannot plumb fuel gas through a wall into a residence (and an attached garage counts as a residence) over a certain pressure (Is it something like 20 psi? I forgot. But, it is nowhere close to "tank pressure.").

Now, do you have a window or a door that you can temporarily run a line through? You can disconnect the line when the torch is not in use.

And the Drama continues...if switching to a oxy torch didn't entail the extras I'd be there today. It's not just the cost of the torch (used ones are not too hard to come by) its the hoses, regulators, oxygen tanks or concentrator...blah blah blah....lol
Im my dream world (which is where I'd like to be)... I'd have it all and then some...lol
Including Sharon's talent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...lol

'Binkster is correct on hard piping issues.... 20 psi is all that is allowed by NFPA and in some areas its limited to 10 psi or 5 psi, dependent on local codes and conditions.

Here is my new studio setup.

I have the tank outside my garage under a rubber garbage can with holes in it and I run the hose through an open door to my torch. I have box fans circulating the air from that door to the open garage door. When done, I turn everything off, disconnect the hose and close the door.

Does this sound like a relatively safe setup?

Where can I buy about a 15ft. hose? I'm willing to cut a small hole in the wall, but I still have aways to go to get tank outside. My hose is about 5ft.

I got mine from a welding supply place. I just told them how long the hose needed to be. I took in the torch so they could put the right type of fittings on it.

I know what you mean about the costs of everything else if you go to an propane/oxy torch. That's what's holding me back from upgrading as well. Since it's essentially a hobby and I haven't attempted to sell anything yet.

There are many places that have hoses up to 20 feet long.... Most likely place to find a hose that is propane approved and has proper fittings on ends to fit tank and torch is a camping supply place.....

If you can not find a long hose either locally or online... Here is a source of hose and connectors....

I recommned Dale's post above.
Use his first link.
Scroll down to "Propane Torch Adapters and Hose Accessories"

Complete Assembly— Connects a propane torch (that would normally connect to a disposable fuel cylinder) to a bulk propane tank. Assembly consists of a 12-ft. hose with a 1"-20 swivel fitting for a disposable-cylinder torch on one end and a bulk tank, handwheel POL (CGA510) valve connection on the other end. 7976A24 Each $37.50

It's a good quality system.
It should be THE standard bulk fuel supply system.

Don't use longer than 12'
