I tried too many times (in vain!!! #-o ) to get it right.
Can anyone tell me how to do that???
I don't know if the image will show... newby here!!
Picture is sort of teensy, but this looks like a murrini to me. If someone is doing that by hand, then my hat's off to them.

That is a murrini (spelling?) It is made with a star steinmart mold. They run about $60 to 80.00. I sure hope this helps. If this is incorrect please someone correct me.

Yup, looks like one of those canes you can pull using an optical mold...
There is a demo on how to do it in the new Kimberly Adams book.
Michael Barley showed us how to do it in class using the optical mold too.
I tried it at home with the 12 pt. optical mold and it is NOT easy!
I don't think it is a star murrini. I think it is a rod of white, striped with black. You cut that into chips of murrini. When you put it on the bead, slightly melt it in, then plunge the center with a black stringer. Melt it the rest of the way in and that is that. The stripes will cave into the center making the starburst pattern.
Yes, I agree with Mary. Using an optic mold to create grooves for the stripes makes it easier to get them evenly spaced, but it's not necessary.

I believe Corina has a tutorial on her site somewhere

Yes she does, here is the link to that particular tutorial.
This one is handpulled without an optic mold, and its not hard making them at all( it is quite difficult to use them correct once they are done, but time and practice will do the job )

Hurray!!! Thanks to everyone!! I'll try it out with that tutorial!!
Corina's the best for tutorials.... I have her book (Passing the Flame) and this is the best book I ever had! Her pictures are no nice and her explainations are easy to understand!!
Thank you again!
I saw her make these in class. I haven't tried it yet but it didn't look too difficult to make. I remember her saying though, that the trick to using them was to poke the center once you have it mostly melted in and that's what brings it together.

Hi All - I also did a Michael Barley class (amazing, fantastic - the best thing I ever did to improve my technique) -- and he used a 12-point optic mold.
I'm having a hard time finding one on the web - anybody know a good site to buy from? thx

Olympic has these Steinert molds (http://www.glasscolor.com/lampworking/steinert_bead_molds.aspx). Make sure you get a bead one, not one of the larger ones for furnace work.
Weaver Industries (http://stores.ebay.com/WeaverInd_Optic-Molds_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ7QQftidZ2QQtZkm) has some on ebay. They're not as deep as the Steinert ones, so you can only do a small pull at a time.
I'm too impatient, so I have the Steinert so I can do a longer pull. But, I'm used to working large amounts of glass because I make big beads. If you work small, the Weaver Industries ones might be easier for you.

I work small, and I'm still amazed at how much glass it takes to even use the Weaver ones I have. I can't imagine trying to use even more glass.

I haven't seen any of your beads in person, but I've seen pictures. It's just not humanly possible to make detailed beads that tiny. So, I stand by my words. You're not normal. Sometiime's that's a good thing. ;-)

Woohoo! I get a present for being a smart ass?! How come no one else seems to appreciate it? LOL Really, that is very sweet of you. I'd absolutely love to see something in person. Thank you so much, and I promise not to stalk the postman. :-)

ive made something similar I make a striped encased cane...ill take a black rod stripe with light ivory / white whichever color every other stripe is the light color and ill stripe the base rod color in between the colors sometimes I encase it sometimes I dont but I end up with a big striped cylindar on the end of a mandrel ill heat it up to a gather and punty another rod to the end and pull out a stringer / small rod let it cool and cut it up into lil pieces....once I get that done ill make beads use tweeers to place the murrini wher I want it and melt it in if I want it to come together in more of a star shap after I melt it in ill poke the center and melt it some more the poking brins the stripes in together a lil more.
